I was praying like 90 as us Irish do 😂 as some people were booing when we were getting the high points, but we drowned out the gears by singing Ole Ole when Niamh won . We all danced, drank Irish coffees and black Russians and i sang many Irish ballads that night unplugged with roars of delight during the sing-along. I am old enough to have witnessed our 3 consecutive wins in the 90s and then another win in 1996. We will not win again until RTE (our national broadcaster) modernise the selection process and pick good songs.

If you are judging the age based on the people in the audience you must remember that back then the final was held in much smaller venues than it is now and tickets were reserved for delegates with the performers, politicians, people in the music industry and other people who had connections. There was a lottery in 1993 here in Ireland for the general public to win some tickets to go to the final, the first time that had ever happened here, but hundreds of thousands of people entered the lottery and only a small number won tickets. Tickets were not on sale to the fans or the general public. I was 23 in 1993 and I was so sad I could not get a ticket in the lottery. Anyway that is why the audience looks so different to the audiences today. Today the fans can buy tickets and go to the show. It's the way it should be and I wish it had been that way when I was younger!
But still I remember sitting at home watching this show and screaming so loudly when we won. I was crying so much, I still cry now watching it because it was so close. Those were the days when we had good songs, sadly the songs for Ireland are quite poor now and I think it will be a long time before we ever win again!

They sung in English (a huge benefit in the pre-1999 days when you could only sing in your own language), sent well-liked songs that juries regularly voted for, did good jobs at hosting the contest and were struggling through some internal war troubles at the time so deserved the extra publicity and tourism. In 1994 they didn't want to win but still wanted to do ok, so sent what they thought was just a half-decent song...and still won!!
Sadly in the last couple of decades they've very rarely got through the semi finals, with 2011-12 some of the only exceptions (Jedward being very popular at the time) and 2018 due to a memorable stage performance.

The UK and Ireland set a precident for good writing and producing some musical talent in the previous 2 decades that warranted our regular wins. No the comp is far more European then it used to be. Ireland and the UK don't get a look in anymore. I haven't watched the eurovision since the late 90s cause its shite. Don't understand it anymore.
