Such a fun movie but I'm always stunned by how real it gets once the "story" is over and we learn Zero lost everyone he loved and merely holds onto the hotel for its memories.

Wes Anderson is currently filming about 40 minutes from where I live in Madrid, and, yes, he seems to have brought his cinematic family along. I auditioned for a part a few weeks ago, and got pretty far along, to the last stage, actually, but was ultimately nixed. So I feel your pain, Matthew.

To me, this movie was some kind of sentimental film with regional background, because I've been to many of the places the movie was filmed at. Right up at the opening, that's the Bad Schandau Elevator. The marriage of Agatha and Zero was filmed at the Bastei, a rock formation not far away from the Bad Schandau Elevator. The backroads are in my home town of Dresden, and in Görlitz, which also is the place of the original Grand Budapest Hotel, in reality a 120 year old Art Nouveau shopping mall.

A bit of funny about when they were casting: They put out the scripts to actors wanted to include Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort, pronounced Rafe Fines) Anderson asked him what character he wanted to play and Fiennes has stated he told him along the lines of, "which one do you THINK?" lol.

The "need for symmetry" extends to the text. The names Zero and Agatha allow for the dedication “from Z to A.” Later, Henkels orders a search to be carried out “from Augenzburg to Zilchbruck” (A to Z).

So sweet! You two are adorable in this video. I am also a fan of this film, but your emotional connection to it is way more than I've ever experienced...despite there being SO MANY scenes and moments that I could watch over and over again. I was very excited to see that you were reacting to it! I think you should re-watch Royal Tenenbaums, and then please watch my favorite Wes Anderson films: The Darjeeling Limited and Isle Of Dogs.
A couple of things that I noticed after multiple viewings: The writer's name is never mentioned. In the credits, Jude Law is identified as "Young Writer" and Tom Wilkinson is "Author". We don't get a look at the spine of the book either, but going by all the hotel room keys that have been left at his grave, I suppose "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is the novel he is most widely known for. Also: The book concludes with the statement that he never got back the the GB Hotel before it was demolished, but sometime after the book was published, he made his way back to the country of Zubrowka, where he spent the last years of his life. He is buried in a cemetery in Lutz, which Gustave mentions in his conversation with Madame D in his first scene.
My favorite performance in the film is F. Murray Abraham as the elderly Zero. And my favorite scene is the one where he starts his story: "Well, it begins as it must. With our mutual friend's predecessor: the beloved original concierge of the Grand Budapest. It begins with--"

Five Jeff Goldblum Films needed to be added to the list:
    Transylvania 6-5000 (1985)
    Earth Girls are Easy (1988)
    Vibes (1988)
    The Great White Hype (1996)
    Hotel Artemis (2018)
All are great, Vibes is the only one of the five where the other Woh! Cast can be counted on one hand, the other four are loaded casts. Earth Girls are Easy & Transylvania 6-5000 also are the first and last films he did with his Girlfriend/Wife Geena Davis (He and she also were in The Fly together... Earth Girls are Easy was the only film they were in while married).
My suggestion watch the two with Geena Davis first, then jump to The Great White Hype.

Great reaction. Please, please, please do "Enemy Mine". It is a movie that I think is still relevant today and is so often overlooked. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Emily. If you think you have a "creepy crush" on Willem Dafoe and haven't seen Wild at Heart (1990) ... Do so!
He's his creepiest, but soooo good (meaning acting, not the character he plays).

It's probably the servant uniform but this movie gives me mad Spirou vibes

Emily. I think The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) is for you.
Everyone you gasped for in this (except Adrien Brody) is in it, plus a few more gasp worthy.
So make your man buy you a Adrien Brody body pillow before watching, and your movie experience will be complete. ;)

This movie got me questions :
Why do they stamp a map of mexico to Saorsie Ronan's (Agatha) cheek? What does it add to the plot? I mean, does it matter if it was map of Singapore instead of Mexico?

Another good hotel movie is "Hotel Rwanda," but it's deadly serious and made all the more disturbing by the fact that it's based on true events.
