No state has experienced a cost of living rise like Florida the last 10 years. Many like to point to the rise in housing costs, and they have a good starting point. However, most commodities and services in the state have also risen more than most states. Factor in the property taxes, property and flood insurance and it's quite ugly. So glad we did our homework and rented before pulling the trigger on a retirement move to SW Florida five years ago. The writing was on the wall at that point but has become increasingly worse. Factor in the ancient infrastructure, crime, traffic, corruption at all government levels and you really have to wonder what is going on.
For a lot of reasons we stayed put in the Mid Atlantic region. Spend winters in SW Florida (rent). Did buy a second home in the "North Country" of NY where we spend June through October on the St Lawrence River. Yes taxes are high in NY but home prices in this region of NY are ridiculously inexpensive. When we do decide to sell our house we will likely buy a place in the Carribean.
@@JohnJohn-wr1jo The Caribbean is prone to hurricanes. I have also considered the idea of moving to a place with lower cost of living like Costa Rica but I wouldn't feel safe or that I have any rights in a foreign country. Also, I don't want to treated as an "outsider". It's likely I'll remain in the USA 🌏 God Bless America!

Hi John, thanks for sharing your insight on the issues facing Florida. Since you decided not to move to SW FL, where did you end up choosing?
