    So talented, yet so humble. Love this guy and his family/friends. A breath of fresh air for so many Florida and California wanna be's "locals". The guy is better than 99% of the surfers in the world, yet talks like he is your best friend and wants you to succeed. I think if all surfers were following this folks (Florence, Koa , Eli) people would see that being friendly to one another on the water is way better than fighting for waves and "playing the local, look at me I own this place"

    Wow fantastic love this, your taking your channel to a whole new level Nate. A lot on this channel might have been to young to know that Clark foam was being shut down and so it was hard as heck to get boards for accouple years and that where a lot of the other board materials come from. Zoard was ripping it up send me that link to his NFT line. Great job :O) sent Zoard some info look in to it.

    To summerize here's my understanding + sensei Nate inputs :
    Small waves (weak and slow) = flatter rocker, wide tail for speed, squash for release, round for drive, big fins and whatever construction suits you, PU, EPS, Carbon...,
    Big waves (fast and powerful) = agressive rocker, thinner tail (cuz wave has enough power and you want control), pin tail for the control, small fins and PU numéro uno, overall winner because of its predictable inertia, EPS until too big (7'faces) or too bumpy,
    In any ways, foam is our friend and we better go over litered, to maximize wave count,
    Thanks for reading my Tedtalk sensei haha :)

    Love the vids, Nate, keep em coming. I'm just a beginner using the 8' wavestorm that seems to be universally recommended. So far so good, need a few more months, maybe 1 year on it. Then I'd consider like you said going to the 7'0" - 7'6" range. For a smaller, lighter person such as myself does the higher volume play as much of a factor if I don't carry a lot of weight myself? Would I be ok with less volume in that sense? I'm like 140 lb soaking wet for reference.

    I surf folly beach SC, I am 6'1" 215 lbs and I use a 6 ft catch surf log for any and all conditions, that or something like it is my fave. Pretty floaty for my size and can turn . As a beginner it was great cause it was buoyant but its also small enough to challenge me and still challenges me especially on bigger days. I specifically wanted to learn on a short board and after surfing consitantly since about January of this year I am just now, in May, catching waves on the 6' sorta kinda.

    Hi Nathan, i really enjoyed this vid. Just an amature with a fraction of water time but ive had many poly and eps performance boards. Ive noticed with the same volume my eps boards are way more floaty and paddle easier. I wonder if shaving .5 to 1 litre of volume on your next eps board would make it more predictable like a poly. My thinking is the eps def gives it more float regardless of volume. Would be cool to see if shaving a little literage makes the board more stable under a pro.

    Awesome video Nathan, and great insight into the performance of the different materials, exactly the info I was searching for ATM. I am playing around with epoxy boards with a stringer for slabs in Sydney, though I snapped the one I had made in Fiji before I got to try it here in Sydney. Just got another one made and am waiting for a swell to try it out. Fingers crossed it goes well.
    I agree with you on the quad fin set-up that slides around until the side fins take control. I noticed on Kelly's board review on Inta that he has Knub fin in one of his quads and said that assists in stiffening that area up. Have you experimented with a Knub to stiffen the area up? And if so, can you recommend one? Cheers, Caleb

    I just bought my first proper board, pyzel gremlin 6’3, cos my foamie was fucked and i knew that if i bought another id want a poly within a couple months. So yeah i now have the ultimate summer small wave machine for years to come. I’m in the UK so a board that can really make the most of sloppy waves and make it past foamy sections is really important so i spoke to a couple board shops and they recommended a groveller style board about 40L and my height. But i have exams so I haven’t surfed in 3 months and wont til July, could be a tough first week back

    The step between using a longboard wirh a lot of volume and then seitching to a smaller board is the hardest. Longboards wirh a lot of volume kinda stress me out way too much because i cant duck dive or at least try and just get taken out all the time. When I started surfing I started surfing smaller boards pretty quickly. I think that worked out because I can do pretty much all board sports pretty good and am very fit as well. The paddling was the hardest part though and I was sore af all day every day 😂💕

    Would be interesting to hear your take on epoxy glassed PU if you get a chance to ride one. Could that be the best of both worlds for your pipe boards? Durability, flex, weight. Especially if you go with s-glass for added strength?
    Thanks for the in depth video analysis. Really enjoying these!
    An aside for those who aren't into shaping and glassing technology, blanks are usually polyurethane (PU) or polystyrene (EPS). PU can be glassed with polyester resin or epoxy, but EPS can only be glassed with epoxy (polyester resin melts EPS). EPS is higher strength per weight than PU, so that is why people say "epoxy is lighter than poly": can make a lighter board with EPS + epoxy. Epoxy over PU is less common, so everyone calls EPS boards "epoxy". Most glassing uses e-glass cloth as reinforcement, but s-glass is a better match with epoxy in terms of strength (but more expensive). Epoxy resin is stronger than polyester resin, (but more expensive).

    • @ManOfSauce
      @ManOfSauce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man I was hoping someone would throw that info out there.
      So many variables when it comes to materials. Like you said there is core/foam material , cloth materials and then resin to think about.
      Also many of these EPS boards are of the stringer-less variety. Stringer-less is going to give the rider a completely different feel and flex pattern with the shaper relying on the rail or some kind of fibre stringer for energy distribution, not to mention there will be a little more weight missing. Would be interesting to see Nate testing out a basalt/hemp hybrid fibre on his beloved eps/epoxy step ups. He could be just that one step away from big pipe perfection

    • @jamesroscoe7555
      @jamesroscoe7555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ManOfSauce Yes many variables to play with. I'm guilty of geeking out on this stuff, as I started shaping my own boards the last couple years. I actually have one in the pipeline now that will get basalt cloth (definitely tricky to glass as the dark fiber shows everything!)...
      But ignoring the esoteric stuff, epoxy on PU should be straightforward for most shapers/glassers to do and combine that stability and flex of PU with greater durability in those applications where a bit of weight is desirable. That's the theory anyway, would be interesting to hear if that works for someone as dialed in as Nathan. For me, upgrading to s-glass has been easy also. For anyone interested, AndrewW is doing a PU epoxy mid length build on his TH-cam channel.

    Unfortunately it seems to me a lot of people might be too subconscious to use a beginner board which is really sad. When i was starting out i would see other locals at same level as me on shortboards and struggling really bad to even pop up and catch one wave in 3 hour session. 6 months down the track I’ve now progressed to fibreglass from my soft-top and can ride shorter 7’ fibreglass boards fine. A soft top is an excellent part of any surfers quiver especially for small days or messing around.

The WSL winner for me will be Filipe Toledo because of the lead he has in terms of points and the good form he shows even if I would like John John Florence to win but he would have to do some good performances and Toledo would have to miss for him to go ahead. I'm a similar size to you (6'2 210lbs), I'd say get on a 6'1 with 33.5/34 liters.
