  • Here is Suzanne Farrell at the start of her illustrious career at 21 yrs-old in the film of George Balanchine's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Originally choreographed for Diana Adams (but danced by Melissa Hayden at the premiere due to an injury to Ms. Adams) this role became one of Farrell's greatest roles. Here she is partnered exquisitely by Conrad Ludlow, then the supreme partner in the company.

    Sharon Gibbs--My daughter danced this role, when she was a senior in high school, for her ballet studio's annual performance. Dancing means a lot of lessons and practising. Many a night she would be eating a light meal and doing homework off and on. Two points of interest---local boys who never danced ballet helped out by partnering the leads and I made most of the costumes. Great fun. My daughter studied this video over and over to learn the steps and graceful air of Suzanne Farrell.

    Oh, how I would love to see Allegra Kent as Titania - did she ever have the opportunity to dance it?

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, never. She was so exquisite in the Divertissement Pas De Deux Balanchine wanted her in that as much as possible, plus “Titania” was choreographed for Diana Adams and he always preferred a tall dancer in that role.

      @@jcliff26 Was Melissa Hayden considered to be tall?

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yvonne Leslie No, but she was a last minute replacement for the original, Diana Adams, who was injured before the premiere.

      Who was the original female principal for the divertissement??

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Allegra never danced “Titania,” only the Divertissement Pas. Violette was the original in that.

    Is this music from Midsummer Night's Dream or another work by Mendelssohn?

      Another Mendelssohn overture. Athalie.

    Interference on my drive had signally hampered my experience of your performance.
    May we live in a culture where beauty not be held hostage to malevolent and even criminal agents of suppression..

    Dear Mr. Clifford, THANK YOU so very much for this. Oh my! Suzanne's dancing is absolutely breathtaking. I'm in tears watching it. I believe she said in her autobiography that she wasn't pleased with her dancing in his film, but she looks like she is having the time of her life! I never saw Suzanne dance during her youth - the first time was at SPAC summer of 1980.She is just brilliant.

    Love this! And the PDD with Jacques & Allegra; what treasures! Previously I had only seen snippets (the donkey PDD) on the Balanchine documentary published soon after his death. Does this entire film exist anywhere?
