I see a sheet metal worker is something entirely different in different countries. Here in Switzerland we build entire machines not only pipes or so. We also do welding, planning, and so on. And these apprentices are pretty old... Here in switzerland you usually start your apprenticeship with 16, sometimes even with 15 years. But its also 4 years.
In the US, that is when we are in high school. You cannot become an apprentice until you are 18 (although some may accept 17 if you have graduated high school).
In Canada we do welding, HVAC-R design, Ductwork, Piping, Mechanical Service and Repair and so on. Not so different other than starting at a younger age. But I lie cuz you can start at 16 in RAP program through highschool
@@Dave-ko3lm Here in the states, unionized Sheet Metal Workers are involved in drafting (shop drawings), shop fabrication, field installation of ventilation systems, welding, roofing, decking, siding, and non structural partitions (think bathroom stalls). The SMART worker is definitely capable of working on such things as you mentioned, but the division of labor prevents a union worker from stealing work from other trades. For example, a steam fitter will rig and bring in the air handler unit, and the sheet metal worker will put it together and the plenum box alongside or on top of it. The steam fitter will also install the condenser pump, while the sheet metal worker will install the cooling tower and drip pans. Even the carpenter installs metal studs and joists, work that we have lost.
This looks like a job fair ad .... so being a Jman sheetmetal/Gasfitting/Welding/2nd year AC AND engineer in training (MET) this is accurate and yet bogus at the same time. Shop workers get it easy just making fittings. Pay sucks in comparison tho. Residential tin whackers can make good money if you're fast and dont really care about quality but NO commercial/industrial company will hire you down the road. Commercial sheetmetal has its ups and downs but will teach you the most about the trade, the work can suck but its mostly easy sailing hourly. Industrial is the Cadillac of the trade tho, but you actually have to be good at it, because its all about looks and functionality is 2nd but still important as engineers will criticize and the pay is unmatched.
I’m 20 years old, gotten offered a job in this trade in a different state. What is to be expected if I take the job?? I’m currently painting full time..
I’ve done some research and from what people tell me there’s a exam I need to take prior to an apprenticeship, is this true? And what should I study up on if so?.. (local union 66) is the union that offered me
I disagree as you need to learn how to sketch fittings, draw prints, layout fittings, in depth welding theory and design air systems. I can't see doing this kind of training in the field or shop, employers wouldn't stand for a Journeyman being this bogged down doing training with an apprentice instead of getting projects done. I've been a Journeyman local 46 Rochester NY for 20 yrs, apprentice for 5 yrs and pre-apprentice for 2yrs...27 yrs pounding metal so far and looking forward to retiring in 5 yrs.
@@MrKitty-zv3dl I can see your viewpoint but it just depends how far you wanna take it. My company sends me to a college to take welding classes as well as machining classes
@@chrisb7152 You're a lucky lad you don't see that very often from the majority of employers today. Sounds like a decent company to work for where they value your employment by investing in your future with them.
I believe one of the ways is to get in touch with one of the local unions and find out if they are hiring, take a test and wait for an interview, it might take a year plus
Dont forget the extensive forearm tattoing required to seal duct. Neck tattoing is required for architectural jobs.
