  • In this video, I'll show you how to recovery the platinum from the plate from the hard disk. Please note that not all discs have platinum in it. In the next video we will refine the platinum films and we will drop the platinum with Amonium chloride. Enjoj in the video.

      You may not like the amount of platinum you get, but there was no indication that it will be more :)
      The process works, but it's not profitable.

    Good experiment. That will be cool if you actually get platinum. I have done quite a few tests with these hard drive platters and my findings are that the specific ones you are working with are aluminum on the inside and the foil is nickel. I have never gotten any platinum out of these so it will be interrsting to see your results. Please let us know even if the experiemnt isnt a success. Nice work.

      We will see in the end. It interes with the way you tried to get platinum from the plate, maybe share the process with me. It will show the result in any case, any result of it being at the end.Thanx for suport :D

      So the way i did it was similar to you. I dissolved the aluminum and collected the foils. However when I weighed the foils from onehard drive platter I realized it weighed way too much to be platinum. So i started testing it. Turns out the foils are magnetic which leads to nickel. Then I dissolved the foil completely in aqua regia and did a stannous chloride tes with a negative result. I know from my experience of working with platinum that stannous chloride indicates a positive even with very small amounts of platinum in solution. SO i came to the assumption that these hard drive platters have no platinum. I also tested the glass core platters with the same result. I will attach the links to my videos in a separate comment so this doesnt get flagged as spam but you may have to go to your spam comments to get them. Anyways throughout the experiments I have done with the platters I have foundthat there is an indetectable amount of platinum if any at all. But good luck I could be wrong.

      Chemical Mishaps vhen you disolve foils in Ar,do you boil solution or not,just interest me?Do you got smol foil like me on the end-they dont disolve vithout heating on 80 c degres?

      999 Dusan Gold recovery i did have quite a time dissolving them. But i was doing very small scale reaction in test tube to just test for presence of platinum. So i put the test tube in a styrofoam cup of hot water and replaced it when it cooled off until the foil was completely gone. Took probably 1 hour or so. It worked for what i was doing but on a larger scale it wouldnt work. But with my experience with platinum it dissolves very slowly. I always applied very hot heat and would just replace the acids as they were evaporated which is quite wasteful but i wanted it to go faster. As for the step after the platinum is dissolved i never had very good luck precipitating the platinum with ammonium chloride. The ammonium chloroplatinate always absorbs too much water from air and is a mess to try and dry and melt. So what i would do is boil the solution down after dissolving the platinum to get just the salt and then rehydrate and boil down again to remove all of the nitric acid leftover. Then i would dissolve the salt and add a small piece of alumnum. When it stopped reacting with the solution i would add excess hcl to dissolve the leftover aluminum. Then you should have a black powder in bottom of beaker which is platinum. However i am not an expert and this isnt the best method because if there are any othet metals like nickel then they will be present also. So u may have to do the ammonium chloride method. Or you can use my preferred method and remove the nickel powder from the platinum with a magnet. I have done this method and it works but the powder has to be extrememly dry and very fine. Anyways. Like i said im not an expert but i have learned quite a lot about which process i like to use and which i dont.

      I saw your video shoots. It's also true that it does not oal platers contain precious meta, it's possible that only 30% of them contain platinum or palladium. I will drop with Amonium chloride. I did a quick stanious test this morning and got a reaction similar to Paladium. While I was ill, I left the solution occasionally in the sun at 40 degrees Celsius and after three weeks I still have a foil that did not dissolve, and I added a little nitrite two or three times, which means it's a noble metal. We'll see for a few days I vill finish the process to the end.

    If the foils are not only Nickel and Kobalt, why don`t try first HCl for Aluminium, than HNO3 for the nickel (and decant the two liquids, get rid of Al/Ni)? Platinum should not dissolve in that and stay as foil or fine powder in filterpaper, than dissolve with aqua regia (AR).....

    • @999DusanGoldrecovery
      @999DusanGoldrecovery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I removed the aluminum from Hcl, but I directly dissolved the foil in Ar because I think that it is a nickel and precious metal aloes, so only the nitric needs a very long time to do the job itself, but it can, of course, in that way. I still have the other foils that Ar did not manage to dissolve without additional heat, which tells me that it is platinum because the paladium would have been dissolved much easier.

    I attempted this ONE time,,I had enough HD PLATTERS (disc) to fill two 5gallon buckets,, didn’t get any platinum because they were all made after 1980,,, I was very disappointed at wasting all that time and chemicals for nothing

    • @999DusanGoldrecovery
      @999DusanGoldrecovery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I was disappointed with the amount of platinum I received, but what I did was wanting to do the process. Many of my plates were with very old hardwares, those thick discs.

    • @mcleb84
      @mcleb84 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If a disc does contain platinum it has a layer that is about 1 micron thick. Which is pretty close to nothing if you want to hold a tiny ball in your hand. Would require a few hundred more disks that many people don't even have room for, or the resources to even accumulate that many. It is like expecting to save the gold foils from a bottle of liquor where the liquor costs more than the gold content every time.
      Then there is the time spent refining and the money spent on chemicals. If you owned a recycling company that just collected old computers all day and dealt with hundreds or thousands of lbs daily then it may be worth it. And the hard drives are not going to be the money maker. We are talking gold, copper, and silver. Such an abundance of scrap that you can pour bar after bar. Unfortunately, due to the growing knowledge of metals contained in things that become junk everyday, people have caught on and will hoard these items or try and sell them to you at a low price (with high shipping cost) or a high price (low shipping cost).
      If scrapping is your primary business you can do quite well. At least it will have to be a hobby that burns most of your free time.

      The reason for such a small amount of Pt that came out is that it does not contain every disk a Pt. When I scrap the HDD, I personally never look at whether they are newer or older, the drives go to the same bucket.We all know that there is Pt in them, we agree here, we also agree that it does not contain all Pt, so Pt refinement from HDDs is completely unprofitable. Video was meant to confirm Pt in disks and show that it can be removed without expensive tehnology. This is no tutorial how to make money on this.
