How Nagi Seishiro overcame boredom (and you can too)

  • Why does Nagi enjoy football later in the series, but not initially? It's not as obvious as it first seems...
Throughout his time at Blue Lock, Nagi gradually enjoys football more and more, in this video we take a look at why that is, and use the example of Nagi Seishiro and his experiences in Blue Lock to do so.
We all spend a lot of time doing what's... easy rather than fun, and this is an important distinction that Nagi demonstrates, because when you look at the other characters in the show such as Isagi or Bachira, they're having a lot of fun, but they're not doing anything "easy", they're really getting stuck into it.

so in summary "just do it and then you will start to enjoy it" this describe my experience with every thing I put an effort into.
there will always be that barrier of discomfort followed by a layer of enjoyment and then it repeats itself

Dude, the part with gaming 10+ hours every day for years spoke to my soul. I don't think my younger self would've accepted that I was actually bored without any sense of direction. Whenever I couldn't play anymore and didn't have a phone yet, I'd do the most mindless, low effort things like watching TV or hell, playing on a different console.
It ended one day because I finally realised I actually wanted to *do* something in life, and yeah long story short this video put it into words. Glad to see you're still enjoying video games in a healthy way!

These are great lessons and I appreciate the work you do. Using anime to convey positive messages like these to a younger audience is genius. I'm 16, still trying to find ways to mature and be stronger in myself before adulthood. I've watched some of your videos in the past, and while now some of the stuff you say seems like common sense to me, at the time it really helped me understand things I didn't know before.

I can relate to this problem quite a lot.
I was and to be honest still am addicted to Video Games.
Games like Destiny 2 and COD were my lives hobbys.
But then I was catching myself, like you sayed, that I wasnt having fun.
I was beginning to question myself.
    I liked the "Hero Moments".
When you win against all odds.
Winning the 1v5 situation feelt good but I started to ask myself if it was worth the time I put in.
I noticed myself starting the games out of habbit and boredom.
It was the addiction to the hero moments. That clip that made the past 4 hours worth it.
Then I had a accident that ment some time in a hosbital.
I felt like a junky to be honest.
My body and mind graved the gaming. The rush of the Hero Moment.
After that few weeks I knew I could not quit the games like that but I started small.
I started to game willingly not out of boredome
Then I limeted my time on them by asking myself every hour if I had fun. If I aswered with no I turned of (That was mostly after 1-2 hours).
Then I started to play other games.
I forced myself to give me the "gaming fix" without the hero moments of my main games
    And it worked!
After 1 hour I simply stoped the game because it was not worth my time.
With that free time on my hands I asked myself what would be more anoying.
To focus a bit of energy for the gym for a week to try it out or the self loating that I wasnt in the body I liked to have.
    And that worked to.
To be honest I still dont like the gym even after 9 Months but it became a health habbit.
I just use the time to hear some podcasts or some YT Videos.
So far it worked wonders. I havent played thouse game anymore for more then a hour when friends invide me on the weekend.
And I lost 30kg so far (66 pounds)

A similar philosophy is how I started painting minitautres.about 5 months or so ago I had minis to paint but was afraid to start because i wasnt experienced with it,and i was afraid i would ruin the minis by painting them badly and it would be a waste of money. Then i decided to say "screw it. The only way to learn from mistakes is to make them." So i did,and while my first few have not turned out the best, i like to think i have improved with each one i've painted. I've learned not to thin my paints too much. I've learned better ways to hold my mini while painting, and i've learned how to utilize my brush better. It's definitely a learning experience, and one im trying to use with my writing as well, because i want to write a first draft by the end of summer and have a book published on kindle by december

I usually think of pushing myself into it and overthink as described in this video. The way I overcome this is to think of all of the useful things needed to make the decision, and then think on whether that they impact truly starting it at all. Not in the way I WANT to start something but AT ALL, meaning in terms of planning. Once I answer those questions, I just blindly jump in.

Another great way to think about it is for what to do is to instead of thinking about the hard parts is to think about the most fun parts. Like with video games let’s just think of valorant you think about ranking up not getting mad at your teammates. For me I like learning and studying because I think of being able to answer all the questions in the class and getting A’s in the class. With things like tennis I think of being in the heat of a tennis game and being in the moment. For coding I think of making a successful code and listing to Lofi for night vibes. And for the gym I don’t think of having a tough time working out I think about getting a v taper and becoming more athletic.

    Longgggg comment time.
I think my favorite part of Nagi's development in the match of Team Z is what he says, and his very obvious mood shift later on in the match. Which, to skim around spoilers of the current manga, they're very, very similar. Now, when I first saw this video in my recommendations I said to myself "I thought his problem wasn't boredom, but merely a lack of motivation for anything." However, you tied in his boredom to his overall choices, and I think that was done well. So good job LFA. Anyway.
(Slight Ep. Nagi spoilers ahead.) At his first real interaction with Isagi we hear Nagi say "I really don't get it... I think that if we lacked talent like you guys, we would've quit football a long time ago. Why do you still keep moving forward?"
He is playing with Reo in hopes that his promise is fulfilled, that he'll enjoy soccer, and that he'll be thrilled more than any game or nap he could have. But he knows he can make it. He understands he's talented, and he's been treated like a talented player since joining. He knows that his win might as well be guaranteed, and there's no danger in not trying. However, at the look of certain defeat for Team Z, he wonders what pushes Isagi to try for a goal that is seemingly impossible. Why they're able to try for something despite their lack of talent, and why he doesn't try for something despite his own talents.
Nagi reaches a dilemma. Now, I don't disagree with the point in the video about him saying "I'm not motivated, it's impossible" and how he likely just assumes the world cup is impossible, but I do believe the wording was right. Nagi is talented. He knows he is. But he isn't one to try, ever. His only purpose for trying is to secure his goal with Reo of getting to the world cup and winning. So, despite his talent, he doesn't try unless it comes down to their dream. He speaks to Zantetsu about how Reo is the first to treat him like a person, one of value and such. All this builds up to his awakening. He sees Reo scared. The talented duo which should have been unbeatable without them trying are now losing to players with seemingly no talent.
Nagi notices this and it clicks for him. He understands that in order to win, in order to achieve this dream he shares with Reo, he needs to try for once. He's not certain it'll work, and there's no guarantee for him that it will. This is when he buys onto Isagi's and even Team Z's reasoning for trying despite certain failure. He gets why they're fighting for their dreams, even if they might not win. Now, the stakes certainly aren't as high for him as they are Team Z, but I believe Bachira's comment of "If we lose here, then that just shows that's all we were worth" somewhat hit him too, or at least Reo which Nagi witnessed.
This is when the awakening begins. Reo is sweating, Nagi understand this uncertainty, but he *wants* to try it. Everything makes sense to him, slowly, but I believe it does. Ego's comment, Isagi's motivation, his dream, his ego, it all makes sense to a degree. And it's described beautifully. "'I want to test myself.' This impetus known as 'Curiosity'."
Even in the face of uncertainty, he realizes he can't win unless he tries. He realizes Team Z's efforts outclassed just talent. Ego is even later quoted in a meeting saying "Actual talent is having the fortitude to prove one's own abilities." Which I believe is a hint to Nagi's growth, and why Team Z was doing so well that match.
They're (Team Z) not necessarily born with gifts, they're not insanely special, they're not geniuses, but they push through the challenge and try to win even if there's little hope. Nagi never had it till that moment. But similar to a motivational speech (ironically), he thinks to himself "What could I do if I tried? If I gave 110%?" And it's executed in a perfect panel, where it's as though he's floating above everyone (the panel even rotates the scene to express this), trapping the ball, stillness painted beautifully in the air, and he scores what is to this day, one of the best goals of the series. He does so, purely because he tried. And then, and only then, does it click. Only then is it fun for him.
I don't think he saw it as impossible at first, I think Ego's words to him of "useless confidence" was implying that even if he's talented, effort is what matters, and he assumes he can be the best without trying, both literally and physically. Nagi assumed it was pointless because in his mind, he was the best, but he didn't want to try purely because he knew this. "I'm not motivated, so it's impossible." He was being honest with this. Could he do it? Yeah, at least to him. But that is exactly what demotivated him. He wasn't challenged in his eyes, and it was boring because there was "No fight" for him in Ego's words. I could go on, but I'd just be restating the entire scenes lol.
I honestly think the only thing that is confusing of Nagi's ego is when we see Episode Nagi and his match with Barou. Because it's not brought out by the game itself, but because of Barou's trashtalk to him and Reo. It'd be interesting if we ever get more in it in the future.
Thanks for reading my TEDtalk :)

No it's a job. Actually it is both at the same time

Procastination about homework, learning, cleaning, maybe even Sport, are all task that are challenging and that most cant just Start with it. Instead of the challenges, its gaming, its scrolling. All where you get also a kind of achievment.
