Yes, they were very tight. Freddie was John's closest and perhaps only friend in the band. Freddie was the oldest member of Queen while John was the baby of the band. Freddie was always very protective and encouraging of John.
Peter Freestone wrote that Freddie had the utmost respect for John and loved John’s songs. They made a number of collaborations with just the two of them, with Freddie providing all the vocals and John sometimes offering all of the instrumentals. One of their songs is even titled “Friends will be Friends”. Freestone is quoted as saying “….but what I think a lot of people don’t realize is how hard Freddie’s death hit John” when asked why John was not with Queen’s remaining members during a 2005 tour.
Freddie also did not tolerate any show of emotion from guests while he was ill, as he did not want to upset the people he cared about. I’m sure John not visiting was probably due to not being able to control his emotion, during the tribute concert he looked to be on the brink of tears. With all this information, I now believe the two had the closest friendship in the band. Very different from what I saw in the movie!

I always love that when Freddie was on the piano, John would be right behind him.

Or close to him

He was used to having men behind him
Yeah Betty, you are right, I never really thought about it before. I think Freddie was John's support system, his someone to lean on. That Freddie cared enough to boost John's confidence in himself to face the kind of crowds they faced and the bands trials and tribulations was another example of his kindness because I also think Freddie in person was a shy man in some ways. It would explain why John left the band after Freddie's death, his support system was gone. Well, I hope John is OK and I wish he, Roger and Brian all the best! They and Freddie gave the world some great music and I will always be grateful! Blessings all, ...Vickie
John once said
..there is no more queen without Freddy
I watched him in one vision documtary clip how genius and master class is freddy "freddy and others never interest or care to do cheap and average project for money" As these guys know each one have potential gifted craft to make timeless high class quality and hard to perform in live to perfection by other artist😂
Without Freddie and John there is no Queen.
John Deacon is an underrated bass player. He’s not one of those flashy, million notes per second players, but his basslines were tasteful, in-the-pocket grooves which were always perfect for the song, with just a TOUCH of something extra.
He’s not often brought up much in discussions of great bass players, but he created two of the most iconic bass intros of all time.
John is a very talented, humble and kind man!
How is he underrated when he's considered one of the greatest bassist of all time?
Under pressure
Dm, dm dm, dddm dm
I read in an interview that when John was asked which member did he feel most comfortable writing with, John responded, "Freddie is the only one I have written with".
There will never be another Freddie Mercury ~ John Deacon
I agree!
John is a total introvert, but behind the scenes, he was just as vocal as the rest of the band. Deacy was an instrumental part of the band. Without him, Queen just wouldn't be Queen. His song contributions alone were epic!
I couldn't agree more.
True
Trueee. And i hate when i see videos with title like "what happened with Deacon" its total bull***. He has lived a rock style lifestyle for so long and he said that for him Queen without Freddie just isn't it. So with all beautiful past memories he retired.
I wish him long and happy life 😊
@@karlohaze5304 Yes indeed, he went out at the top of his game and we need to respect that.
@@ericgeorge5483 , Yes he did go out right after the tribute song to Freddie , Only the good die young , and Freddie said it himself " After you reach the top , the only place to go is down, I know I can't run around on stage forever" I believe they were all so grateful for the time they had at the top , but we're also realistic , knew they were older then the most bands of the time and had more money then they would ever need and could retire anytime they wanted , but the " Family " they chose is what kept them together and playing! But just like Pink Floyd , The Rolling Stones , Bowie , any of the really good classics , people will always pay top dollar to see them play live , and Freddie also said as long as people want to hear us play live , we will continue , and when they no longer want to hear us ,. I will move on and do something different! And John did just as he wanted! Without Freddie Queen was no longer Queen! I would still pay top dollar to see Rogerina and Brianna play though!! Anyday of the week! I would probably sell my 1st born grandchild to buy a ticket if I couldn't afford one!!! 😄😄😄
John still is a very important part of Queen, and he will always be.
John is Queen, alongside Freddie, Roger and Brian. The 4 of them are Queen.🤩😎👑🤩😎👑🤩😎👑🤩😎👑
Well Said.
Exactly!!!!! I think THE SAME!!!! Thank you!!!! :-)
Amen Ana!
Yes John is their financial advisor now
WELL SAID MATE!👏👏👏👏👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I think it’s so sad that John never seemed to get out of his depression after Freddie’s death. It’s a very hard way to live.
Some hurts go to deep...😔
I only worked with a person 4 years, went too see him too go too work, he was saying he can't go didn't feel well so we went without him, he died that night only 48 years old.. So John will be hurting so much..
I think from what snippets we get from sources, John and Freddie were closer than brothers, Family is people standing beside you when no one else is. How do you get over somebody who loved you that deeply like Freddie loved John. They had a very special bond as Freddie never had a brother, just a sister Kashmira.
John was battling depression and anxiety long before Freddie died.
@@jeffsymons4535 yes he had family problems :(( that's why he angrily threw his guitar at Freddie's last live concert
John is like Freddie's little brother,Freddie convince john to write songs, help john to come out from his shell and "Spread his wings", they're good "Best friends" and they will "friends will be friends" right till the end .
So touching 🤧 i hope john is doing good these days
A radio station in The Netherlands recently broadcasted 'The Legends Top 250'.
The number one was Queen, and fortunately for once they did not play 'Bohemian Rhapsody' but 'Friends Will Be Friends'. With the note that it was written by John.
I thought it was nice that they chose this, especially because Deacon wrote such wonderful songs. Queen would have missed out on a lot of real classics without him. The same goes for the other three guys, I think it's the very real collaboration that makes Queen so unique and good.
I agree with you completely. I thought that Freddie encouraged John to write songs for Queen album, without credited Freddie. In my opinion, the first John's song Misfire, the music should have been written by John and the naughty lyrics by Freddie. You're my best friend was all John but i doubted some parts of the lyrics was meant to Freddie, not all to his wife Veronica. And the song Who needs you, you may have noticed the lyrics in the album version and the early version were much different. I assumed the final lyrics were by Freddie but he gave all the credit to John. These are my assumptions so please don't misunderstand me :)
@@j6samsung679 we as fan of them have different assumptions about them esp. In song writtings and yes i agree with yours, 💛 and for my view Freddie Guide and Guard John throughout their career . They have almost same taste in music, for example "Another OnE Bites the Dust track" i heared Reinhold macks says that only Freddie and Him Believe in that song so they work on it together. And yes it was a Big hit. Freddie was John's Angel, Maybe that's why John step out after his Guardian Angel(Freddie)left us.🤧😢💛💛
I want to say more of my thoughts also but my English is so bad😅.
@@tonyataylor4697 hey you noticed that too? I have always felt that there was something more than friendship going between John and Freddie, and I remember either Brian or Roger saying in one of the interviews' about 'another one bites the dust ' that how Freddie bled his throat in order to sing the high notes in that song because after all it was John's song...what does that mean....and John throwing away his guitar in the final Queen live concert at knebworth....there's definitely something more to that storu
@@tonyataylor4697 omg that's news....plz tell me everything would love to know it
True mutual love, loyalty and respect! Something to aspire to...
I liked that Freddie was their for John, and got him to join the band.
Me, too. So sweet!

Love anything I can learn
In the 70's we had to re open a upscale restaurant one night. The owner made 1/2 of us stay. We all pissed and moaned. The dishwasher ran out the door so I had to do prep, line and wash dishes..Ya not very happy..lol Before long the place was insane. We reopened for Queen! After a while the owner came back and said the band found out you all reopened for them and wanted to say thanks. The few of us walked out and right there to greet us was Brian and Roger. Brian was tall, polite and even elegant. Roger was engaging and witty. Over to the right a ways was John and he politely smiled and thanked us. He was reserved. Way in the back in a big corner booth was Freddie. He was in the middle w people on both sides of him.We walked over and he said thank you, thank you all..superb meal and had a playful smile. I was famous at school when word got out..lol It took a while for me to watch the Movie BR. They nailed it and in one part of the movie when they said Thank you Portland, that was the night we served them..
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
Wow what a fantastic story thanks for sharing

A lot of love from Cairo Egypt
Thank you so much for sharing that with all of us. ❤
Love them both!!!! For me, without Freddie & John there is no Queen!!!

John was one of the best bass guitar players in the business, he was perfect for Queen.
I get an incredibly humble Vibe from John

He certainly was. If I remember correctly, despite his wealth people noticed that he still drove a Volvo instead of a much nicer car.

"Whenever this world is cruel to me I've got you to help me forgive" John himself says it all.
but he wrote that about his wife
You got to remember that the Freddie you saw on the stage WASN'T the real one. Freddie was as shy as John
Freddie was shy but John was more shy
John was such an integral part of Queen... legends forever👨🎤
John Deacon is one of the best bass player in the world...
Deacy so loyal to Freddie 💛
the only band where every member had a number 1 hit
Queen is one of the greatest band on earth for all time. And friendship of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon is Really Royal. God bless🙏
It's heartbreaking that John never came out of his deppression after Freddie died, John if your out there, I hope you are doing OK.
John deacon deaky is a sweetheart ❤️
Every introvert's dream is to have a friend like Freddie
THANK YOU MR DEACON FOR YOUR PART IN SOME OF THE MOST FABULOUS MUSIC I HAVE EVER LAID EARS UPON. YOU ROCKED MY LIFE AND THE WORLD.
Much respect for this man. John Deacon is a great person. God bless you, Mr. Deacon.
They say friendship knows no bounds and I think that is true for John and Freddie. True friends to the end.
Truly!❤
friends will be friends, you're my best friend, are a bit amongst many hits written by deacon. during superstar life, his songs reflecting the importance of warmth that could be shared among one after another. he mindfully remind us for always being nature human being. thank you for always being john deacon wholefully🌸🌸
Freddie was the glue that kept them all together. It's that simple.
I have always said that. Band Aid proved it and the other band members stated as much after it. Freddie reinvigorated the band to further greatness with hit song One Vision and beyond. What a band.
John Deacon's song writing made them massive in the US. Another one bites the dust was the hit that made them the biggest band in the world back then . All the guys wrote wonderful magical songs but John wrote the best "POP" songs and its his songs I love the most.
agreed 🔥its totally our chiildhood anthem how can we ever forget..
Everyone needs a guardian angel. Freddie was John's.
I have always thought that what John Deacon does during the Live Aid performance is as good as it gets. Listen to how he is hitting those harmonics while backing Freddie during We are the Champions. Gives me goose bumps every time. Absolutely perfect playing and I pitied every band that had to go on after that!
Loved his yellow shorts. Delia Morris
i always think about how when interviewers asks John what keeps the band together he always says "it's the same 4 people" he must've been devastated when he died and queen is not queen anymore since Freddie's gone
He knows the level of their legacy where they made the live perfom better than studio version john mention multiple times how perfectionist is freddy who never want to make cheap and average music where any artist having average vocal can perform instead they made it totally hard to do it to perfection.. 😂
John is a top bass player and a genius songwriter
Freddie always kept John to his right. John was the brother Freddie always wanted. Roger and Brian were brothers, as well but they were the fulcrum that balanced the group.
I LIKE TO THINK THAT JOHN DEACON DECIDED THAT THERE IS NO POINT IN STAYING WITH THE BAND WHEN THE HEART AND SOUL HAS GONE OUT OF IT.
Queen wouldn't have been Queen without John. That sentence works equally for all 4 of them.
Basically Freddie said ¨but my dears, you’ve got to be seen and heard¨. That’s why he puts his arm on top of John’s shoulder on the video for Killer Queen, that’s why he collaborated with him on a couple of tracks and that’s why he’d sing with him during sections in Liar. He also very much championed his songwriting. He sang Another One Bites The Dust til his throat bled just cos he believed in it that much. Freddie made sure that Queen were Queen and not Freddie Mercury and Queen.
"He sang Another One Bites The Dust til his throat bled just cos he believed in it that much" I read that too. Nobody else could have given such vocals that made that song soar. USA radio stations were convinced Freddie was black. That's how incredible Freddie's voice was. Sensational.
@@truthsayer2548 totally!
John Deacon loved Freddie more than anyone else in the world.
Yes, John loved Freddie more than anyone else in the world. And John is probably the only one who hasn't overcome Freddie's death.
The ‘Big-Brother’ Friendship Of Freddie To John Was Truly Heartfelt & We Could Feel John’s Loss! One Thing I Must Say, Freddie Sang & Sings Damn Well! 💪👍👏
My favorite bassist.
I have always thought that Freddie's passing was why John left the band. He and Freddie had a bond. I think it was too painful for John to continue with Queen without his buddy Freddie.
This is lovely - so carefully and respectfully made. Something in John died with Freddie, you can see that at the tribute gig. I mean, all of them were heartbroken and emotionally wrung out but the shot of John trying desperately to not break down (00:34 in the video) gets me every time I see it. Freddie gave John the confidence to be the Dancing Deaky we all cherish. It’s good to see he has the love and support of his family.
Queen is the four of them, nothing less or more, at least for me...
I agree. I mean really. He was 40 ish and essentially retiring at $100, million per year! He saw what the genuine truth was in my opinion. He & his wife had 6 children together and possibly by then even grandchildren. When he was interviewed prior to Freddie’s passing he was asked if he had any hobbies. He said, “children my wife and I love children.” Of course they were all broken hearted, of course they were. He and Freddie were especially close. But the emphasis on how fragile and frail he was has gotten kind of old, don’t you think? I may be wrong but as I remember it he had a difficult time with depression. So I pray he’s not as still as depressed as he was after all these years. 😢 of course going over and over again the details of Freddie’s death would make you saddened to recall, but time has a way with God using it to help making those things easier to recall. We pray that’s right! ❤😢❤
You must be surely American agree.
@@vivinamorrison nope, I’m from the U.K. :)
John and Freddie where real friends.
John Deacon will miss Freddie Mercury rest of his life and he will be 70 years old this year
What a tremendous blessing of friendship
I have always loved John and always will. X
John Deacon, was an exceptional bass Player. Freddie helped John alot, because John was more quiet and not sure about his potential to be able to fulfill his part with being with Queen. When Freddie started helping John, it opened him up, and built up his confidence. With them being close and good friends, Queen carried on, and their career for over 20 Years was absolutely Magnificent. Sadly when Freddie passed, it truly devestated John, because Freddie was part of John's Life, and was always there for John as his Moral Support. I feel very sorry for John, because he never has gotten over Freddie's passing. It's like part of John's life left, when he lost Freddie. I pray for John alot, and I hope that he will find peace and love. Because depression, is very bad, and the only people that suffer from it know what it does to us. I've suffered with it, most of my life, and there's no cure. Medications don't work for me. The only thing that I can say, is to pray. With all the problems in our World, there's just no end to sadness and depression. This Worldwide Pandemic is never going to end. God Bless Everyone in the World.💓🙏🏻 From Illinois USA 🇺🇸 June 19, 2022

They really were like brothers and i think they both needed each other

I've been a Queen fan since 2005, when my best friend - then and now - sent me their Platinum Collection CD. Those guys are really addictive.
It's pain to John to stay as Queen without Freddie.
Единственный кто не предал Фредди !!!!!! Настоящий ДРУГ.!!!!!
John the man who made me fall in love with bass.
john was an important element needed for this great band
Correction: Freddie was extroverted on stage. Off stage he was an introvert and shy. People have a tendency to think he was the same on stage as off. I hope John is happy whatever he chooses to do.
I hope John Deacon is doing well 🤗🤗🤗 I really love his smile when he plays bass, cause it gives us good vibes😍😍😍😊😊😊
One of the best bass player
The way you told this story of Freddie and John's friendship clears up a lot of the questions fans have had around John wanting to stay out of the public limelight
Brothers from different mothers. Plus John was an all purpose bassist. He was all over the fretboard.
It was a great friendship!
in fact john is the member of the queen who has suffered most of the death of freddie
Believe it or not, freddie was actually quite shy as well.
I loved every part of this viseo. I did not know of Freddie's and John's tight bond and friendship.
This story highlights how introversion isn’t shyness.
I wish I could have a friendship like theirs.
Oh! I’ll bet there’s not one of us that feels differently about that, whether or not we’re aware of it.
True friend.Queen not Queen without FREDDIE.
Not at all up to you.
john and freddie protect each other i love that
They're my favorite.
There is nothing in this world that can even come close to losing someone that you love! I believe it can change a person completely. And I don’t think all people are affected this way. I like John feel the pain so deeply over the death of a loved one that it’s hard to even blink my eyes or breath Which I think are both reflexes. 😢I’m so sorry John. The best bass player ever!
Yes I love Freddie & John, two very interesting contrasting personalities yet mashed closely, as all four did! They had bickering moments but loved one another, they were realy like family.
Isn’t that what a family is supposed to be all about? It provides a safe haven against all of the things that are against us “out there”. We can come home or at least together and feel that unconditional love and know that it’s all going to be okay because I AM!!
Happy 75th Birthday to Queen Legend Freddie Mercury. Hearty wishes from Hyderabad, India 09/05/2021
Deacon John like Freddy labeled him in the press was a perfect match made to make Queen be so transparent among other genres. It seem like the Queen songs that have transcended into commercial appeal after 30+ years had John Deacon penmanship and influence all over it.
Deacon John, top man.
Freddie was John's bigg brother and protector. They were very close.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I love John, peacemakers, lover not fighter!
Deacon is an excellent bass player!
I believe John simply loved Freddie a bit more than the rest... To him Queen was Freddie...
Exactly to him when Freddie died that was the end of queen . John was very introverted but Freddie helped him out of his shell
@@michelleflood7225 i feel Freddie was the type of person who felt for the weak... A lovely person... 💓
Um, no. People deal with grief differently. How middle school to argue over who misses someone more.
@@michelleflood7225 Except John didn't retire until years later.
@@TheaterPup the world is so full of narcissists, dont you think?
It's safe to say that John's reason fro staying in the Queen and glue that made him stick even when the band skyrocketed fame and success and attention was one and only Freddie Mercury. He was the sole reason for him to still giving out his presence in limelight and I can very well understand this.
Many people will say that Oh why he left the band it was the greatest opportunity with money and fame. But the thing is there are other people out there who just want to work in a calm and cool environment without any Fame or Distraction and Media and Press or even just plain large audiences. And i can very well understand that. Especially with Introverts who are very Shy, Reserved and not outgoing tends to go Reclusive if the person that they share a deep bond with and was their reasons to stay goes away...
Love Deaky n all the band Freddie was such a talented na legend
Roger and Freddie actually lived together before Queen too, they ran a Market stall in Kensington in London. They were very close friends. John appreciated that Freddie looked out for him and John said that Freddie was very good for him because he was so shy, but around Freddie he managed to come out a bit. John left the band in 1997, 6 years after Freddie died. Brian and Roger argued more than the others did, and they admitted that Freddie was actually the peace maker and compromisor. He is still director to Queen productions and still has a say in anything Queen does to this day. Brian and Roger suffered too over the death of their friend and brother as of course they would. Roger has written a song for Freddie just like Brian did, as well as the whole Queen song No One but you. Roger later did "Say it's not True", dedicated to Freddie and the sales went to charity as it was for Aids / HIV. I think John left because wasn't secure in the limelight and hated attention. Also, Freddie was no longer there...so John felt no reason to carry on. I feel for the whole band, because they all miss Freddie.

John was very close to Freddie and very shy,so Freddie help him get over that john and Freddie were both great song writers, dont you just love how John dances hot
I love John, he was always with Freddie. The night before the concert, Queen on Halloween/Jazz Tour, I went to a gay bar (Cafe LaFitte in Exile), for the first time,in the French Quarter (New Orleans). Moments later Freddie and John walked in. I was just a few feet away from them! Freddie gazed over at me as I was looking at him in shock! John was there with Freddie like a good friend should. Apparently they were inviting people to a record release party in New Orleans the Birthplace of Jazz. Needless to say I missed out on the opportunity to go to that party. According to the local news, it was New Orleans Wildest party to date !!! I wish John the best. All I have to say about Freddie’s passing is cry when you feel the need to, let it out, don’t keep it bottled up, it’s the worst thing you can do.
Deacon was the writer of "Your My Best Friend" --- feel me folks?
I love how the 2 were literally ying and yang balancing each other out.
Freddie, although large and out of this world personality and performer on stage, was actually very private and shy in his life away from the stage. That’s probably why he and John were so close.
Absolutely! They would have understood each other.
He gave Brian his sound when built that amp for him out of junk parts.
John was Freddie's little brother...Freddie's child...Freddie's friend...Freddie's bassist...Yes, Freddie's bassist! He was a powerful brilliant bassist.
