Contentment is subjective. As long as you’re content with what you’re doing, ignore the comments that question your lifestyle choices. We’ve been travelling like you two for 4 years now and you get to a point where we do not do or go to places that most people think we should do or go. We do things because we like it x

I think you guys have struck the exact right balance, and a sustainable balance at that. We travel extensively and have long ago lost the urge to see the major attractions at each place we visit. We derive the most pleasure by simply taking it easy, eating where the locals eat, observing how people go about their everyday lives, learning about the local history and politics and having a beer or two along the way.

Mindfulness and intentional spending are often misunderstood. It's about making the personal choices that fulfill and make us happy within our means. Just having the privilege to discover new countries, new cultures, and having the freedom of time at a much younger age than average is a richness 🙂

We live full time in our RV and travel all around Canada(home), USA, and Mexico. We also add on other international destinations, this year we are travelling to Dominican Republic for 6 months. It is very hard for people to understand our lifestyle. Everyone thinks that we should go go go and see every single thing that every location has to offer. I try to explain to people that this is our life and not a vacation, so like you, we are ok not seeing every church and hiking trail knowing that IF we wanted to see or do those things we would. It is also personal preference, sometimes we just don't like being in crowded tourist spots and opt for an isolated spot in the middle of the red woods somewhere in Oregon or camping on a quite beach in Baja so that we can pet and kiss gray whales. Do what you love and you will never be board! I love your videos! You are doing a wonderful job and I so look forward to each and every one of them. Cheers!

Yes, definitely, we were super-impressed! Just always check the type of bus first (the same route and company can have different levels at different times); we used Rome2Rio to start out, then looked on the websites themselves. We also hoped for a route that wasn't available the time of year we were traveling. And if you end up needing/wanting to take one, know that 2nd-class buses (without a/c or good shock absorption) aren't always listed online.

I think vast majority of people especially young people who only know things their smartphones tell them. They just copy/follow others, feel obligated to do as others. They do things/visit places just to tick off and say they've done, take snaps to put on their IG..... not for their own enjoyment and pleasure.
You're kind of outliers: you do things because you like them and they make you feel good. It's because you have strong personalities, know yourselves and each other so work together very well to make things go right way. Stay blessed 👍

That’s a great point! We’ve been in the UK for 3 weeks and visited London for 2 nights 3.5 days lol it’s exhausting coming from the states, as we’re looking to experience a slower pace of life. Getting into and out of London is just like DC/NYC🥱
We’re house-sitting full time and are traveling thru Europe without having accommodation expenses, besides a night or two here and there, all while seeing places that aren’t really on anyone’s bucket list but are just as nice.
We are probably the only tourists in town, and the locals appreciate (buy us many drinks) when they hear that we chose to visit their little village.
To each their own, just get out and do it! 🚂🚉🚡

@@againstthegraingolf301 Welcome to the UK :) Yes, life in London is relentless and very fast-paced. I know because I lived there some years but got tired of life on the fast lane and decided to move to a town just outside London. People in London have no time as cost of living is so high, they're having to work constantly and earn extra to make ends meet. Anyway life outside London is definitely different and slower.
In the last 7 days we've had equivalent of 7 month of rain! Just would like to sat it's not always wet and flooded. I'm interested to know more about your house-sitting arrangements.

@@soundslight7754 very true. It’s unfortunate to not have the time to enjoy the small things. I’m definitely blessed for the opportunity to do this. I’ve spent a week in Buckingham and now a week in Sandbach, near Manchester. A few days in London as well. The dog sitting is great! Takes a bit of practice to get the hang of applying and reaching out for sits, but once we had a few 5 star reviews, we’ve had many invitations to sit globally. Returning stateside in the spring for family functions, and continuing on around the globe.

@@againstthegraingolf301 When you were in Buckingham, you were 8 miles away! :) Yes, I know Sandbach in Cheshire, lived a bit further up more years, many unhappy memories...
I'm guessing the owner doesn't want to leave the house empty and invites some people to stay there while they're away and that's how you come in ... but how can they find you, how can they just hand over the keys to a complete stranger and go away? I don't understand.
About dog-sitting, I imagine they can't go away with their owners so you stay and keep their company, feed them, take them out for walks and exercise... Do they pay for your time? What about transport? What about times you don't have a home or dog to sit? You still have to stay somewhere, no? Sorry for the questions, I just can't get my head around the concept and am trying to figure it out. Please shed some light if possible. I think 3-6 months would be better, then you can establish some routines, get to know your area, visiting nearby places of interest, even taking evening classes to learn the language (in foreign countries) or the local history, of course meeting people and making local friends.... It all takes time but well worth it 👍

Great to see this, we travel full time in camper and are also budget conscious. It’s difficult when speaking with friends and family, as they live and travel in completely different style and I often feel “cheap” compared to them. First, you will find that bus travel in Mexico is both affordable and comfortable. If possible, pick seats 1-2 or 3-4, which offer much more legroom. Second, I join you in opting for this form of travel for budget purposes. You save money, but also avoid hassles like enduring airport security, etc. Not mentioned is the fact that bus and train travel can be picturesque. We recently took the bus from Mendoza Argentina to Santiago Chile. The ride through the Andes was stunning-quite honestly, not topped by any excursion that brought us to other pretty sites throughout South America. Enjoy more of Mexico!

You splurge sensibly on occasion, and you make choices on whether to go high end food or some kind of excursion. You make sensible choices too on accommodation. This makes sense. We have not done every excursion, we pick and choose based on what we like. We also do live in places (not vacationing), we want to know if someday it maybe a place we spend more time in the future. Also I think everyone has a budget, but they are at different levels…I may also feel your budget is a bit tight but I am certain you have set that budget for a good reason. I have a financial blog and I always say don’t make a budget but write down your expenses.
A budget can be a constraint for many. At some point, they just splurged.
Writing down your expenses, by categories, help you understand where you put your money. Do you need that 2nd latte today (or one every day…). Do you spend too much on taxis while you could use public transport or walk a little more ?
Writing down your expenses help you focus on what matters to you to optimize your dollar/happiness ratio, whether you travel or not.

Good one folks. In my mind, being from Canada, we want to travel all winter to warm climates ( snowbirds ) but are not really adventure travellers. We will do activities we find interesting, but feel not need to go on every excursion in the location. We are probably budget snowbirds. Great tip on the Flights Brian. Looking forward to more of your Mexican adventures. PS. we found ADO busses to be very good and reliable. The absolute worst thing to get into in Mexico is a cab!

Mexico buses are great. Two things to mention: Don't take the night bus between Oaxaca City and Huatulco too many turns and elevation changes it will leave you off balance for days. The bus companies may not accept your credit card on their website because its foreign. If this happens pay through Paypal, this happened to us with a Canadian credit card.

The ADO busses are great. I totally agree about not wanting to go to an airport every other week. I also don't spend money on airport meals. I take a couple of hardboiled eggs, nuts, cheese, apple and a wee bit of chocolate, on airline travel days. It's like a fun quest for me now not to spend in the airport. I've also racked up enough miles now to get a free club lounge pass per year and I save that for a long layover.

I would LOVE if you all do a Mexico via bus video. We did our first bus trip last month from Santiago Chile northwest to Valparaiso on the coast. We used flixbus and it was $12 each round trip and bus was great with a/c and wifi and charging ports. It was a bit intimidating using the app first time. The bus depot in Santiago was a bit of a mess to figure out but we did it in the end. While we were a little ahead of you all as we hit Oaxaca earlier this spring, we are absolutely planning 60-90 days in Mexico in the future and getting around by bus is very likely for us and/or Tren Maya for parts of central Mexico.

We hadn't bought tickets because we didn't know if the flight would be late, etc. Big mistake on our part. Don't know if it is the same everywhere - just wanted to give you the heads up in case it is. Brain and Carrie thank you very much for sharing your content. I keep watching many other "travel channels" and find myself coming back to your's.
My wife and I are nearing retirement. At retirement, we plan to slow travel and stay within each country we're at for an extended period of time averaging a month + or - depending on how much there is to do and see. Even though I watch many travel videos, I feel that I am still confused about how to deal with accommodations while slow traveling. Meaning we should we rent a place for a month and do day trips from that one location or should we stay at hotels each time we travel to a different place within the country?
Also can you please advise me if a monthly budget of $4500 (US) is enough for the two of us to cover everything including health insurance, transportation, food, accommodations and sight seeing?
Notes: we would like to travel outside the US for 9 months and come back to the US for 3 months.

I have a couple questions. How far in advance do you start looking for airfare and lodging? Also Carrie, you mentioned you were using Safety wing. As for SafetyWing, that is correct you're limited to your time in the States. I carry a ACA plan in the States so I have coverage when home. Another option would be Cigna Global with added on US coverage. Price isn't bad when you have higher deductibles.
