Just like a gambler in the casino. He plays the first hand and lost ==> then he says to himself “oh, that was just bad luck, only one hand, I’ll get it back on the second hand”. So he plays his 2nd hand and lost again, and this time he uses a different excuse “oh, third time is always a charm”. And so he tries the 3rd hand and lost again, and at this time he started to doubt just a little bit about his chances, but because without the brain to think straight, he says to himself “if I continue to play, soon or later I’ll hit the jackpot. You’re telling me that I can’t win one out of many tries? Non sense”. So he keeps going deeper and deeper and more and more involved to the point that he’s used his children college’s savings, pawned his Ferrari, pawned his house, his wife left him, ….and yes among those tries, he did manage to win one or two hands but these winnings don’t even come close to be a fraction of what he’s lost ===> so ALL of this tells me that he knew all along that he can’t beat the casino but because of his severe “OBSESSION” about winning and defeating the casino, he’s lost his MIND and unable to think straight, and this is EXACTLY what is going on within nato due to the “feeling of being exceptional” that they’ve set themselves up to, nobody did but themselves.
