Are your straps or handles shredded? Replacing Straps on a Kate Spade bag.

- Have you ever stopped using a bag or purse because the handles were worn out? This video shows how I change out the old handles for new leather handles on a Kate Spade purse/computer bag. Let's continue to keep things out of the landfill by saving repairable goods.
This project can be done to all sorts of bags using webbing or faux leather and a domestic sewing machine. I use my PFAFF 335 industrial walking foot machine to sew real leather straps onto this old bag. This bag was gifted to me on my local FB Buy Nothing group and then I offered it back to the original owner. She was so excited and gracious when she got it back. I'm so glad I could give this old, used item a new life.

I started the channel in October 2020 as a way to help my remote learning students with sewing from home. I made sure they all got a machine (their own or a loaner from the school) and a package of materials and supplies. It was a big undertaking but worth it. The students sewed at their own pace and did written curriculum on set days. We are now into the second semester of at-home learning for some students. This semester it is a senior class of grade 11 and grade 12 students.
When I realized that there were TH-cam watchers that wanted to watch my content, I branched out and started making other videos to share some of my knowledge. Please comment on any of the videos to tell me where you are from and/or let me know what kind of content you would like to see.
So now, we are all on a sewing journey: it could be my students, it could be my children, it could be my sewing journey...but it's definitely your sewing journey. I hope you join me every week.

You can also wrap scarves to protect the handles, or cover the straps.
How can you cover them?
i am going to see if my old Singer (1970's) will go through the leather. It's a good workhorse.

I had to change out the handles on a bag I made for a friend. Of course I made it harder than this. Great tutorial. I will use your tape and glue idea when I have to do this again.

Nice of you to offer it back to the original owner! I don't think my sewing machine can handle leather sadly but I have a couple Kate Spade bags with this same situation! If we don't have an industrial sewing machine is there a way to do this? Also what about straps that are attached to hardware but not something simple like a ring?

What about faux leather? I have nylon Kate spade purse and need the straps replaced.

Where do you buy the strapping?
At our local leather store. You will have to do some research to see if your local city has a leatherworks store. If not Tundra leather or The Buckle Guy are great resources.
Do you repair other people's bags
No. But you can try a cobbler or shoe repair.
What thread did you use?
