    My current Honeywell thermostat has
    Red- to R
    Black- to W1 and W2 with a connector
    Yellow- to Y
    Green- to G
    Orange- to O
    Blue- to B
    White not currently connected.
    Should the white wire be attached to W1 and the black wire not in use? I understand we don’t need the jumper connector with Nest.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What slot was the red wire in your existing thermostat? The R wire is also referred to as the Rh wire, so that's why I put the R wire in my old thermostat into the Rh slot on the right hand side of the Nest.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would install the Next Thermostat and replace and/all existing thermostats where you want to. In my house, I have two thermostats, one upstairs and one down. I have replaced both of my original thermostats with Nest devices. You don't need to replace all of your thermostats, only the ones you want to. One Nest Thermostat cannot control other (non-Nest) devices though.

    What if the thermostat is an older model, you know the turn-stile / wheel-dial type which has two bottom switches underneath: Cool - OFF - Heat (on the left side), Auto - On (on the right side). There is a spring coil inside, very basic. So is the wiring on something this old compatible with this Nest?

If you ever need to update your WiFi settings you must do so directly on your Nest Thermostat and not on the App on your smartphone. I'm pretty confident that you're downstairs and upstairs thermostats are independent. I believe there are some situations where you can run two thermostats off of one furnace, but it is rare. I am not an HVAC person. If you have two furnaces running two independent thermostats you do not NEED to buy two Nest thermostats, you could start with one and then get a 2nd one later on, or not. Hope that helps.

    The orange wire is connected in W1 or O/B? It was labeled to W1

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, so here are my comments on the O/B wire. That was the first install I had seen with an O/B wire and I did consult an electrician before I wired up that Nest and put the orange wire in the O/B slot. Not all wiring jobs can be the same as I have seen the wrong color wires coming from the furnace to the thermostat. In most setups the white wire is W1 and a brown wire is W2/AUX. It really depends on how the original unit was wiring when installed. As long as you follow the mapping of the wires on the unit your replacing (take a picture before you take off the wall), you should be good. When in doubt, call an electrician (I am not an electrician). Hope that helps.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you do not need the internet to run and control the Nest. It's easier and more convenient to make changes and program on an App using WiFi, but not a must-have to be able to install and run the Nest. Now...the new Nest Thermostat is about to come out and I did hear that Wi-Fi was perhaps necessary to be able to create schedules on the new Nest. We will have the new Nest in our hands in about 2 weeks and will be able to tell for sure by then.

    Is WiFi required for installation?

    • @SmartHomeMojo

      Without WiFi the Nest Thermostat will function as a regular thermostat which you won't be able to control remotely. During install I believe you can bypass or skip the internet connection step and proceed with normal setup functions. If the Nest Thermostat needs an update you won't be able to get that until you connect the Thermostat to WiFi.

      Thanks for the comment. Yes, the Nest does offer sensors that work with both the Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E. You can actually use up to 6 sensors per Nest Thermostat or a total of 18 sensors per home. You can buy then in either a 1-pack/$39 or a 3-pack/$99.

    Is it capable of controling the humidifier ?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the device (humidifier) has a mechanical switch you are good to go. A mechanical switch are those that actually have a physical switch (called either a toggle or rocker switch) that you have to flip from one side to the other. An example would be a traditional light switch on the wall. Electrical switches have nothing to toggle but looks more like a button you push. An electrical switch has no "on" or "off" position like a mechanical switch. Typically, all the appliances that have a mechanical switch can be controlled using smart technology. I hope that helped.

    Test all the wires with a multimeter for 24v AC or higher especially the common or the nest will not charge , and stall the install (USB charging the nest is good for 2 hrs). The nest is basically a computer in the wall not a thermostat running off two AA's. If the common is dead most recommend repurposing the G fan wire to the common.

The metal bracket goes against the wall and the trim plate attaches to the metal plate using two of the short screws in the side holes, then the thermostat attaches to the trim plate using the short screws in the top and bottom holes.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never seen a black wire in the setups I have done. When I'm not sure about wiring I always consult an electrician as I am not one. I always take a pic when I take off the old one so I can see clearly where they go on the Nest. I have seen documentation where there is a black wire on Nest Thermostats, but if it wasn't wired into the old one I would call in an electrician to get to the bottom of it. The electrician will have to go directly to the furnace and see what the wiring is from the furnace control board and work back to the Thermostat.

    I got a little confused and need clarity. The red wires was shown as connected to the RC and was hunkered to the R. So how did he decide to connect the red wire to thr RH?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, on the original thermostat the red wire was coming into the R spot with a jumper to the RC terminal. Since it wasn't coming into RC I didn't connect it to RC on the Nest, but rather the RH spot. With the Next Thermostat you don't need jumpers as the Nest will automatically jump the two red connectors. On conventional setups the RH spot is 24VAC power from the heating transformer, so that's why I put it in the RH spot. DISCLAIMER: I am not an electrician or HVAC professional. If you have questions you should always consult a professional. :) I did my own research before putting it in that RH connector.

      When you look at the Nest Thermostat, the center # is the target temp that you want it to be at and the # around the outside of the ring is the current temp.

    I noticed the white wire was in the W2 connection of your old thermostat and you inserted it in the W1 connection on the Nest, was this a mistake on your video

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I did consult an electrician and do some additional research when I installed that Nest. Since I had no Stage 2 heating, I put the white wire in W1 and then put the orange wire in OB. I've seen many different wire setups when installing Nests. Nest has a very good Pro Installer Guide on their website as well.

    As far as the bills saving is concerned, have any one really saved some $$$ when using this thermostat ?!

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the positive comment! I am very confident that we are savings on heating & cooling since installing the Nest Thermostats. It's tough to calculate because the weather is not constant. I can see what I spend year over year, but the inconsistency of the weather makes it tough to actually measure savings. With settings schedules, using Home/Away Assist and Eco Temps, I'm very confident that we are seeing some savings as a result of the Nest devices.

    If you take out the screws of the entire plate first and move off the wall there is less chance of losing connecting wires in the wall .

    Heat pump? Shouldn’t your white go to w2?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The white wire is usually your main heat relay (stage 1). W2 (sometimes brown wire) is the stage 2 heat relay wire. Now, I have encountered installations where the wires were mis-labeled from initial thermostat install (pre Nest install). In that case, you may (very rare) have a wire color that does not map up to the traditional nest model. You may have to run wires differently based upon the initial setup, always take a pic before you take wires out of thermostat being replaced. Not saying that was your situation, but just wanted to mention.

    Hi
    Why not mention how many wire
    Minimum needed for this device
    If only 4 wire there not available
    C wire what happened?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thermostat wire comes in variations from 2 wires up to 8 wires depending on what functions your thermostat has when initially installed. The options of wires you might encounter in your setup are either 2,3,4,5,6 or 8. I believe 2 wires is the minimum need to hook up a Nest Thermostat. If I didn't answer your complete question please let me know.

    How can we hook this up to our 12v heater?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you can. I am personally very leery of personal heaters. I do have one, but am always home when I use it and certainly wouldn't remotely turn one on if I wasn't home to be able to monitor it - just my 2 cents. In order to be able to control devices (such as a 12v heater) using smart technology, the heater (or other device) must have a mechanical switch - an actual on/off button, like a traditional light switch (a toggle switch). As long as you have a toggle switch, you can most likely control it using smart technology, like Alexa or Google. Let me know if this helps.

    Nice video, but for those who have never used it, what did you do in order to select a setting?? It looks like you squeezed the knob, but not sure. You did not show how to get the nest app on your phone, because I downloaded the app but cannot create an account.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment here, let me try and answer. To go to the main menu, you simply push in or tap on the nest itself, which will bring up some options. You can turn the outer ring on the nest either way to select the setting that you want to go into. On my iPhone, I went to the app store and selected the Nest app, which is a light blue background with an image of a white house. I hope that helps.

    whats the orange wire for?

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my setup, the orange wire was an O/B setting or changeover relay. I don't believe this is a common wire in a thermostat setup as I haven't seen many before. I always consult an electrician (as I am not one), if I have any questions.

    The only mistake you made and it was kinda of a major one was. What ever you do do not under any circumstances use an electric drill. One tiny press to much and you will shatter the base. Remember the base and most of everything on this unit is plastic. That’s the reason they say in the direction don’t use power driver, they went so far to supply you with a screwdriver. Everything else looks great.

    • @SmartHomeMojo
      @SmartHomeMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point John, thanks. Yes, I would recommend using the screwdriver included or another one, which is what I have used on future installs. Don't use power tools to install screws with base as they could get damaged. Don't risk the chance of that happening.
