    Spike Jones 'dinner music for people who aren't very hungry' is why I love Weird Al and Frank Zappa ,and of course Dr Deminto... All masters of the crainium jujitsu

    One of the joys of teaching orchestration is to introduce to the young'uns (especially those sheltered within typically narrow backgrounds of "classical music" or "rock") the colorful instrumental craft and joys of Spike Jones, Carl Stalling, Raymond Scott, Billy May, Percy Faith as well as Nelson Riddle, Don Costa, Gordon Jenkins, et al., and many film composers starting with Bernard Herrmann, in addition to Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss, Wagner, Debussy, Ravel yadda yadda.

    If I were living in the US in the 50's, I wouldn't miss any of his concerts! It's just so funny.

    Spike Jones always knew how to "ruin" a classic piece of music 🤣
    I grew up on his stuff, I guess that is why I'm so crazy to this day 🤣

    The Strings had a wilder, better "holiday" with Spike Jones arranging their itinerary.

    This reminds me of when me and my friends had a band together. All our instruments were different but they seemed to work together in perfect harmony. XD

    The Spike Jones version I know has a chicken clucking voice doing the melody. This is a cool version too with all the harp.

    Oh my gosh! I've been looking for this album forever! Had it on a cassette tape as a kid but never knew the name of the album. I knew it was "newer" than most Spike Jones material; it had a much cleaner, full sound. Persuasive Concussion, eh? Is it officially a Spike Jones album?

      According to most record collectors books, it was planned to be released by Liberty Records in 1961, but it never was officially released, just a couple of tracks leaked out over the years including this one. By 1963, Spike was beginning to slow down a little in health (being a longtime smoker didn't help much, it led to his 1965 death of emphysema.) and he hired Carl Brandt to help out on forming a new band to play folk-dixieland styled arrangements for his last four albums. This United Artists album of Liberty material was released in 1975 as part of their "Very Best Of" series.

    • @robertorick6383
      @robertorick6383 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@eblackadder3 Correct. By the time Spike recorded for Liberty from 1959-1965, the band was known as "Spike Jones & His Band That Plays For Fun", then as "Spike Jone's New Band" for the final four Folk/Dixie albums.

      Originally a hit for David Rose & his Orchestra in 1944, it was later adopted by Red Skelton for his TV show on NBC and later CBS in 1951. Spike's original crazy cover was recorded in 1946 on RCA Victor.

    I wonder if David Rose ever heard this version of his music and what he thought of it? Was he amused or horrified?

    • @dannywillisukulelemusic1757
      @dannywillisukulelemusic1757 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thomas Levy; In 1944, David Rose called Spike right after his version of the piece was premiered on network radio and said that he was delighted with it.

      @@dannywillisukulelemusic1757 Glad to hear it. 1944 was 11 years before I was born. However, great (as well as very funny) music will live forever! Could really use Spike Jones in today's world.
