FM forever! There's an interesting story about John Chowning. The short version is that he invented the idea of FM synthesis. He was at, Stanford I think. Anyway, he left Stanford for some reason ( maybe they did not get was he was trying to do.) Yamaha learns about FM synthesis and contacts Stanford about it. They had to bring Chowning back, which must have been interesting :)
