I'm at 5:27 and while I am familiar with demos on both the Life Pedal and the Rat, this is the first time I have realized what a difference drop tuning makes. I usually hear the Rat demos at standard tuning, so I think, "Yeah, cool distortion pedal." The demos on the Life pedal are always usually done with drop tuning and I am always in awe of how HEAVY it sounds. I may need to get a pedal with a Rat circuit...
Already got this covered! Fromel Emerald Ring > CMatmods Black Plague > Caitlinbread Chili! You can free up some space on your board with the Life pedal. Personally I like individual pedals from different builders.
Comparing just the Rat part of the LP to the actual Rat there's almost no difference, but the octave and boost definitely sound better and more incorporated on the LP than with the 3 separate pedals.
Thx for the comment. Yep, the big advantages of the LP are size, three clipping, and blending octave. Especially the blend for the octave is very useful. Without the blend, if you use the Tentacle, the tone is awesome but it's just "that" sound, not really usable for stoner or psych. If you have a blend knob for the octave you can do a lot of stuff.
I have a Walrus Audio Iron Horse V1 (RAT Clone with Clipping Options) and a T-Rex Octavius. The T-Rex is a polyphonic Octave Pedal with a (really good) Boost. I can simultaneously blend in Octave Down, Octave Up and the dry Signal. It should be possible to get at least near the sound you get with you're three pedals at 07:39 or 12:09. But i fail. Is the Black Eye really the key to this sound?
The keys are the Black Eye, which is a unique boost (dark sounding, great in front of dirt pedals) and the Tentacle (you have to use an analog upper octave).
I had a similar signal chain. Fredrik Effects Superunpleasant Companion>Fuzzlord Effects Drone Master>EQD Black Eye and the LP. I finally sold everything except the Life Pedal because I realised that with the LP I have everything in only one box.
The boost placed as the last pedal therefore only serves to increase the volume and not to further dirty the distortion. Correct? Otherwise it should be placed between the RAT and the TENTACLE. Am I right?
If you watch some of the wampler and jhs episodes they show that the actual op amp chip part number is irrelevant, if you use the same type of op amp. I'm no expert, but these guys seem to be. The shoot outs sound the same. I have a Rat clone, with vintage and modern voice switch, it sounds identical to a lm308 clone with the same voice switch. I haven't tried it next to an actual rat.
Life Hack V2! This is srsly inspiring 🔥 Lucky enough to have a Black Eye of my own, I've actually only had it in the effects loop so far. Ever place it before dirt in the chain or always after?
I had the life pedal v2 ...I loved it...but I already have a few octave dirt boxes and a unique lm308 rat clone with options galore. I bought the pedal new and the resell market had doubled the value (sold it for 420 lol) ....I mean people really cant pick out an exact pedal at a live show. Also I am trying to move away from being a collector and back to just being a musician.
Wait a sec…am I missing something? I don’t use a big switcher like this so I might be wrong about how it works but it looks like you have the pedals all in parallel…in the LIFE pedal, the circuits are all in series. Am I missing something or did you wire these in parallel?
same sounds... combo offer more flexibility but takes up more space, eqd pedal takes less space but more dollars... I guess if you're into the band get the eqd
Here we go! Life Pedal V2 or Pedal Combo? What do you think?
The rat was pretty close just missing a mix knob on the tentacles
Isn’t the RAT supposed to be in series after the Tentacles?
@@MrPlayfromthesoul yep
I'm glad you're using gloves to make sure we're getting a clean signal
🤣

great job man! amazing comparison!
The inverted colorized monotone effect at the beginning is absolutely genius
What a sound design lesson ! stunning !

Starting to really love your channel. Props keep them coming.
Thx so much!
Great video! Really helps to demystify the Life Pedal. I'd love to get one, but the secondary market prices are a joke :D
Thx a lot for your comment! The tone is very close, the blend option on the LP and the compact size are a big plus. Both options are very interesting.
Pedalpcb has the circuit board available and you can build your own for roughly $50-60usd
Awesome demo dudes!!! Just what I was looking for. Saving us a gang of money! Thanks
Great demo! I love your approach to this stuff
Thx very much!
Joe Exotic Black Eye boost is so fucking funny to me. Amazing work!
Great video.
Sounds very similar but the downside of using the three pedals is it takes so much space. Glad I got my Life Pedal for $180 :D
Great video

How the hell did you get it for $180? Was that the original street price for it new?
@@WeAsACompany is there a “tentacle”-like pedal with blend knob that might work as a substitute?
@@dalderman7810 We don't know, sorry. But this should be an easy pedal to build.
@@Spaghettaboutit That's what I bought it for on reverb when it came out. Maybe I was lucky, I don't remember MSRP.

Right!
@@WeAsACompany so the boost of the EarthQuaker Life Pedal is just to increase the volume and not for push the distortion?
To my ears, the LM308 hype is over blown. Your modern era Rat sounds extremely close.
100% agreed!
Note that EQD doesn't used a NOS LM308, but something labeled as LM308 - probably relabeled op07. However the difference between both is very little.
@@vitaliibobrov8735 Oh good to know. I wasn't aware of that. There's all kinds of chips labeled as LM308's floating around that aren't.

How about a part 2 where you match the official Life Pedal with the Parenthesis Fuzz from PedalPCB?
This would be interesting, we need to get one of them.

On the Life Pedal the BE is after dirt but if you have other dirt pedals on the board put them after the BE cause the BE is MAGIC at boosting dirt.
@@WeAsACompany Sounds like a plan. Thanks so much for the detailed insights!
Is the rat going into the boost? I would’ve guessed the other way around.
Yep, Rat into boost, same as the Life Pedal.

Is the boost at the end of the signal chain on the life pedal?
Yep!
Good to know! Just ordered an Octave Up pedal to try this out 🙏
i heard the boost section is basically the acapulco gold pedal. is this true?

nice patch cables, what are they?
