- Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with second-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old man who died following an arrest earlier this month. Officials announced the charges in a news conference Thursday. CBS News' Norah O'Donnell anchors this Special Report with complete coverage of their remarks.

I was beat up by the BART police before Oscar Grant was murdered No cameras during that time back in the late 1990s 97 going over to my friend's house West Oakland BART station the BART police officer asked me for my ID I somewhat for he told me put my hands behind my back so I complied I gave him ID. So all I know is they put Shackles On My Feet handcuffed behind my back push me down I was unconscious when I waking up mucus on my face tooth knocked out of my mouth they put me in a psychiatric hospital always inside no longer than 30 minutes before they let me go. Doing these days I've been feeling very suicidal I know I need help I need a lawyer so I can be able to sue because they could have killed me already had a head injury I was in a coma I was beat up before stabbed robbed 50/50 chance to live and then this happens. I tell myself tomorrow be better. Pray I pray for a better day for everyone
These cops do not fight street violence, they are street violence. What happened to America when we have to be more scared of police, than criminals.

Nichols resisted arrest and tried to flee. As always, this is when your life is forfeit as its death to any that try to flee. That is law. Not negotiable. Cops are will be proved innocent in court based on camera footage. The moment video recorded Tyre Nichols fighting the cops = game over. Video will beat any worded excuses. Easy win!

Skin color will not get people in trouble with the law. That said, it could be the difference between a traffic ticket and a warning. I’m not accusing police of making racist decisions but they are human beings, and they’re trained to make quick decisions. Biases go into effect under such circumstances.

It is known on public record that some of these officers had pending cases against them for roughing people up. All they do is cover their camera most of the way up and start screaming stop resisting arrest.

I was accused of reckless driving once. Cop wasn’t happy but he wrote me a ticket, prosecutor dropped to careless driving, and I paid a fine. Lived a normal life. I was beaten by a cop in another instance when I was complying. He slammed my head off the car and I had to stay the night in the hospital and see an eye specialist. Quarter inch away from losing vision. I know all too well about how abusive they can be.

The entire police dept is the blame for this tragedy. This is the result of a dept that has allowed this type of behavior to happen by not properly holding cops accountable for excessive force. Units like this scorpion unit usually build a reputation of fear in the community. No doubt these cops did what they normally do. This time beating a man to death. The entire unit should be investigated and supervisors up to the chief be held accountable.

What about the first three officers who started the whole process in the first place?? they escalated matters immediately for no reason and caused him to justly fear for his life and run, which led to his death. seems odd that they've gotten off with no consequences... every single officer and EMT who stood by idle on the scene of that crime should face heavy charges.

Not only does it reflect the Memphis police department, it also reflects the police culture. We've seen this way too many times. We're talking about grown men and women in a uniform. A lot of them are hot heads with bad tempers. As soon as they have a situation of brutality or mistreatment of the public, they need to be terminated and or locked up. There's no excuse for that.

Also, Freddie Gray did not die in a Van. He was stomped to death in an adjacent courtyard by officer Garret Miller, while his partner Officer Nero looked on. This incident occurred out of the view on street cameras. We have another video showing just that.

5 members of the Memphis police department thought this was okay. Each of them had to know that none of the others would report them or try to stop them.
This indicates a culture of criminality and violence within the Memphis police department. I think a more thorough cleaning house is in order.
