      @P T The point isn't that the tweeter is attempting to make it seam like we can hear above 20kHz, it's about the fact that the tweeter can reproduce those frequencies meaning it doesn't roll off as strongly as tweeters that cannot extend beyond 20kHz. Make sense?

    • @Labor_Jones
      @Labor_Jones 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly there are MANY OTHER Critics that are saying things similar.
      ... YOU (Andrew) have said twice now that so far as straight on this product XXX is about as good as it gets TWIST is what I think THE INDUSTRY freaks out about. So, to me, If I were those *other companies.* I'd be breaking your DOOR DOWN to get you to Test my Product so I can PROVE you were wrong!
      .... There in lay the 2nd Caveat to the puzzle, which is don't wake sleeping dog (the public) that it's equipment is far from sonically better as a whole but cost a whole lot more.
      THE FUNNY THING is I don't agree with your assessment Andrew _BUT_ I do agree that anyone who is ditching you from products to review of theirs have more to fear than they think. THE OTHER CRITICS may not have done what you have done, but they do often say along the lines of what you're talking about.
      Okay, (I don't have any rights to, but) Steve Guttenberg approach seems to be if it's interesting to him he might review an item, and if it's uninteresting like the KLH Model 5 he said, Paraphrasing, "They don't have anything I really want to review."
      Now was that true he had the chance or was it SOUR GRAPES.... ;)

    I have owned these loudspeakers for 6 months now and have also owned electrostatic and planar magnetic units. I have auditioned models from Wilson, Vandersteen, mbl, and the list goes on. I rank the R700s as among the best. I’m not even talking price. I have been in high-end audio for three decades now and have also been a manufacturer of high end speakers. Polk nailed it with this model! Enough said…

      Yes! The Polks sound perfectly wonderful and hold up quite well against the most exotic and expensive products available and thru the years I've heard a lot of very expensive speakers. I am not impressed by a speaker that costs more than a car or even a nice house and sounds good. A speaker that an average person can actually afford that sounds amazing is impressive. Thank you Polk Audio!

    Never comment, but thought I might do so here. This was one of the most honest and forthcoming talks I've seen on this topic, and the part with Kristi was really fascinating. Aside from the topic itself (which was great), I think it really speaks to your personalities and relationship with each other when a) she's not afraid to say anything to you, even if she knows it's not going to be an easy conversation, and b) the way you never interrupt her and really listen to what she's saying. I think that speaks volumes about you both as people, and it also shows a respect to your audience that you are willing to just bare yourselves in front of everyone like that.
    About the 'gatekeeping', yeah, I get that sometimes, and not only in hifi. In some ways I suppose it's unavoidable (at least to some degree), and I guess it's up to each of us to take it seriously or not. Don't want to wait on me? I'll gladly shop elsewhere or consider another brand. I've got my little system here and I'm happy with it, and that's good enough for me. Though I do want another amp that I don't really need...haha! Thanks guys for keeping it real!

    Hi all!
    Just a warning about Polk's warranty and customer service...
    We purchased the r700 from crutchfield (excellent customer service) about 8 months ago and have only been using them for approximately 3 weeks. One of the speakers has an awful buzzing from one of the woofers right from the start. The speakers are under warranty. Polk would not send us a replacement speaker or send a technician out to fix the speaker. They only offered us a replacement woofer and instructions on how to replace it ourselves. Crutchfield would have been willing to send a new speaker, but they are out of stock with no known stocking date. It is very disappointing to get a broken speaker from Polk and an unsatisfactory rectification of our problem.

    I have been in my house for more than a year now . I can’t get out much . I bought these based on your formula of diminishing returns of what you can get by spending more . I am so pleased with the sound from them powered by your Rotel 1592MKII integrated amp. I love almost all genres of music . I really enjoy classic rock ,& instrumental classical like Yo Yo Ma . I have Focal Chora D model with the center powered by the Onkyo RZ50 and am so thrilled with this also . I like your angle on what a great product costs and spending double or moor might give you a few percentage points of better performance, but do I personally really need that . Me no. I have many issues with my health that have affected my vision and hearing so I couldn’t possibly appreciate those differences ,but I’m thankful for what you 2 have brought into my life with these pieces,& your channel. These products have brought so much life and joy and the world into my home . I just can’t thank you enough . R 700s in my possession for 7 months and still ecstatic

    First of all mad respect for keeping it real at the risk of hurting feelings and even losing access. This is rare these days and it's also important to support creators that work for us and aren't not shills for manufacturers. Thank you.
    As to how far I'm willing to go on my audio journey, I'm sure I will be completely happy with the pair of R700 I just ordered as well as the 1592 MKII I ordered the other day. Clearly there is a reason both of these items are sold out and there are long waiting lists for both while you can find pretty much every other brand in stock and/or discounted. You are not alone in your high praise of these products!
    I do really enjoy horn loaded speakers and one day might venture into the Heritage series from Klipsch but I suspect I will be beyond happy with a pair of R700's as my only set of speakers.
    Technically both the 1592MKII and R700's are out of my price range, so this is as far as I can go but I will sleep well knowing I got quality as well as not paying for diminishing returns. While the A-S801 Yamaha and RP-8000F speakers I'm sending back are not bad and are fairly enjoyable, I'm sure this new combo will easily blow it away. I can't wait to get ahold of these , pair them up and enjoy them for many years to come! Thanks again and keep up the great work!

      did you get em yet? and how are they if so

    • @juqual78
      @juqual78 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mr.BananaManYT I'm running that 200 watt (actually 225) Rotel 1592MKII integrated but when the Polk L600's went on sale I canceled my order for the r700's due to impatience and desire for better aesthetics. I doubt there is much difference in sound between the two as both have basically the same transducers, similar cabinet construction/bracing and likely the same quality of crossover parts. That being said the L600's are slightly less sensitive and require a bit more power thanks to resistance dips of 3.2 ohms compared to 3.4 of the r700s. That info basically says the R700's will do better with less power and weaker amps.
      Thanks to up to 225 continuous watts before hitting audible distortion, these L600s sing. Dynamics are no issue with this kind of power as they just explode cleanly through these speakers. The bass is clean, tight and prodigious. The midrange and tweeter sound good but are slightly subdued. Almost no chance of fatigue from them but it does lack some of the sparkle you get from more forward sounding speakers. I'm only single wired right now but if I end up keeping these speakers I'm going to actually go with a 350Watt x 2 amp and bi-wire them for improved performance. Most people that do this on their R700 or L600s report back saying the highs/mid clarity improve as does overall soundstage/sound separation.
      My ONLY complaint is that the foam/polypropylene cones don't have all the lifelike texture that you find in paper cone offerings. I notice this mostly with guitar and some percussive instruments, which for some genres can be quite dominant. Metal strings tend to sound slightly rubberized but it's barely noticeable. I'm going to a local hi-fi shop next week to test out some paper/fiber style cones of the Sonus Faber Soneto V and also the Klipsch Forte VI. Both are FAR above the price point of either L600 and specially the R700s and yet I suspect it will still be a very close competition regardless of price.
      I'll report back my findings but with the R700s back on sale at an unbelievable $825 each this might be the time to jump in and hear them for yourselves. If I only had 1700 bucks to spend on a set of tower speakers, pretty sure I would be super happy based on what I am hearing with the super similar L600's. Cheers.

      @@juqual78 I stopped by a shop today to inquire about the Sonus Faber Sonetto V. I'm looking at the R700 on sale for $825 a piece right now and wondering if the Sonetto V is really that much better for $5k a pair. They are a gorgeous speaker. It's probably up to the individual and what kind of sound you like, but it's really difficult to make a decision without taking the dive to compare in person. Please do let us know how the comparison goes.

    I’ve had my R700’s for 6 months now, and just went to Pre / Power with a Parasound 200 Pre and ZoneMaster 2350 (rated at 350W into 8 ohms), and I can definitely attend to more power giving even better results - this pairing just blows me away. I could not want for more. Awesome, detailed, thoughtful review. You guys are great communicators. Great stuff!
    Note: I actually went from KEF Q950’s (nice speakers, but felt something was missing), paired with the Cambridge Audio CXA80, to the Polk R700’s, and found them a marked improvement. Even with running them with the Parasound 200 Integrated, but especially with the Parasound Pre/Power. I actually think they’re a better looking speaker, and built a bit better too. Which I’m sure some will have a very different opinion to, haha.

      Since you have these speakers, I have a question. How are these at medium to lower volume listening? Do they sound dull or are they still wonderful? My current speakers really only shine at higher volumes so I'm looking for something that I can enjoy in the evening at lower volumes.

      @@jeffmpvd7689 Hey Jeff, this is really where I noticed a difference with the KEFs, which were still nice, but the R700s really sound great at low to medium levels, not dull at all. Most of my listening is in this range. With the 110w Parasound Integrated they were already good, but even better with more power from the ZoneMaster 2350.

    I've been an audiophile since my high school days back in the early 80s when I had a Sony PS-X500 turntable (still have it and LOVE it), a fantastic Harmon Kardon cassette deck (direct drive, three heads, Dolby B and C and such), and other high quality components that I could afford on my lawn-mowing and grocery clerking budget (in addition to my biking stuff). I always like to buy quality stuff. I have two Yamaha surround sound receivers that I've had for over 15 years and a Denon that I've also had for around 15+ years. I have the original Klipsche Forte that I bought whenever they came out - late 80s or early 90s??? Still love them.
    I'm remodeling a home that we are moving into and because I want Dolby Atmos, I'm looking to buy my first new receiver in 15+ years. I'm also going to buy all new speakers for the Atmos system in my basement theater. My current theater set-up will be my family room system. I was thinking of getting a Klipsch speaker system for the Atmos system but now I'm considering the Polk R700s with either Klipsch speakers for the rest of the system or Definitive (I have 2 Definitive subs that I love along with a great center channel speaker and some surrounds - would love to get your thoughts on Definitive speakers). Thanks for all of your great content - including Kristi's input.

    The Gold Standard of reviewing....I have been in this hobby since the mid 70s and the hobby is what you make of it...for some its a status symbol ...for others its just a hobby ...everybody has their own reasons as to why they are into audio equipment...for the simple pleasure it brings them in what ever form...

  • @Dennis-vh8tz
    @Dennis-vh8tz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There seems to a be a solid niche for your channel in covering audio equipment that lies between that covered by Cheap Audio Man and the more traditional high-end and audiophile channels. Products which many of us can still afford while offering a mix of sound quality, design, and luxury that is impossible in true budget gear.
    I think honest reviews, and useful recommendations, are anathema to the "high end" audio industry because most of the industry are selling BS . The term "high end" means only one thing: expensive. When a company describes itself or it's products this way it is a clear indication that they have no goal other than being expensive for the sake of being expensive, and everything else is just a justification. In contrast, when a company describe their products as "high fidelity" it means they are at least _trying_ to reproduce music as accurately as possible. Or conversely, if they talk about luxury it indicates that their focus is on design, build quality, and exotic materials.
    The pretentiousness and vindictiveness Kristi describes does exist in other industries, not mass market focused industries, but luxury industries that focus on image over performance. A prime example being the luxury watch industry.

    I think it’s time to rename the channel from the “recovering audiophile” to the “recovered audiophile”. Please step to the podium and accept your diploma. Groundbreaking. I have recently stumbled upon some very negative TH-cam audiophile channels, some going so far as to disparage other channels by name. Call me Sensitive-Spice but it has given me pause about my participation in this little club. Here, in this video, I am restored. This man-in-the-mirror moment hints at something so much deeper and human than I’ve witnessed heretofore watching any TH-cam audiophile channel. Here we see something truly unique, truly personal, a question of faith. It’s a dead-stop reckoning at an infinite intersection. Why are we doing this? What are we trying to achieve? What drives people to this quest? Time being the ultimate depletable resource, is it a worthy use of our time here? How much time is too much? How much money is too much? Here is where we have an opportunity to assess or reassess. It’s a brave video, particularly in an environment where egos and jealousy can become toxic. You’re getting bigger, more popular, and therefore will be subjected to more criticism. This is Kristi’s influence. You’re becoming more balanced. There are some parallels in the high-end musical instrument market. A $200,000 double bass sounds better than a $20,000 bass, than a $2000 bass. Some chase the highest instruments. We are taught to feel it’s necessary. But an excellent musician can almost play something beautiful out of any instrument. Ofttimes the very best musicians play on comparatively medium quality instruments. In the end it’s the music not the instrument. It’s how much of you is invested in the act of making music or, in audiophile circles, LISTENING to the music. I think people find it much easier to throw money at something, admire stats, build quality etc rather than actually take the time and do the work to learn to listen to music deeply.I know why I paid $4500 for my Buchardt A500’s, to get the same thrill, the same nourishment from recorded music as I do playing music live, to capture the feeling I have on stage with other musicians when I’m not. Standing ovation to you both. Let this be a beginning of new discoveries and thought provoking content in the future.

    Two thoughts on your review here... #1. Your majority of watchers have actual limitations where they cross utilize their spaces for both audio (2 channel snobbery... which I am one of ;-)) & multichannel home theater. Of course a system that could be used in that manner is going to be more appealing, available & affordable in the market place as a whole. #2. Polk earned your high praises and I am OK with that regardless of what other equipment manufacturers may think. The higher end folks set the bar. Polk recognized they could play in that market. If a high end speaker manufacturer is so good so as to discredit the Polk, or products like it, then they should go out and earn it. Nice job on the R700! Polk earned it!

    When you mentioned gatekeeping, it immediately brought up bad memories in looking at gear, jewelry, cars, lol. I can honestly say I've went through more Gatekeeping dealing with cars than I have equipment.
    Would I need more than the R700's, probably not, and I'm kind of a Polk guy from way back, but, I would spend more to get either the Klipsch Forte's or the Heresys. And there probably isn't that much if improvements in sound over the R700's. But the Klipsch speakers are like owning a 66 GTO, or a 1960's Stngray. They are American muscle, loud in your face classic fun badass speakers. To me the Klipsch Heritage seris represents a time period that many of us grew up in, and have fond memories of. And for that I would be willing to pay more for something that probably gives less than the R700's.
    I'm sure the R700's will sell like hotcakes, and good for Polk, I'm glad they are back kicking butt and taking names.
    Great review, keep up the great work.

    I stopped this video because Kristi asked a question that's been on the back of MY mind since hearing Sonus faber Lumina V paired with Naim Audio's Star here at the Sound Environment in Kansas City, Missouri; in short, even if I hit the Powerball, I w STILL START WITH THE Vs. I've heard Utopias. Wilson Sasha DAWs. Merlin Pendragons and Excaliburs -- Sound Environment just got a pair of Rockport Technology Orions(?) at $133,000/pair. I think there comes a point where one listens to his/her system and NOT THE MUSIC COMING FROM THE SYSTEM INVESTED IN. You two and Randy over at The cheap Audioman have made this clear to me on both of your channels with your excellent analysis of this often confounding hobby.

    This level of quality and price point seem just about right to me. That is, since I started paying attention, back when rocks were still soft, the technology, materials, and manufacturing should be where Polk is now with these speakers. I’m delighted to see there is in fact a product inhabiting the $1,600 to $2,200 / pair space that are regarded by at least one highly respected reviewer as exceptional. I’m absolutely delighted.
    The real question is, given this information and a desire to buy in that price range will I end up with these or something with an albeit flawed performance but preferred ’flavor’. Regardless, these are now a required stop for evaluation along my journey.
    I can live the brand being Polk. Gatekeepers can kiss my a**. Have a nice day and thanks for another great video!

  • @allenmajors4806
    @allenmajors4806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why spend more for speakers or components for little or no increase in performance? You mentioned build quality and aesthetics. These are the main considerations for me, in addition of course to performance. There may be an analogy here to luxury watches. A $5 quartz watch will keep time more accurately than a $25,000 Rolex, but some people prefer the Rolex for the appearance and build quality. The danger is the illusion/delusion that the Rolex wearer might embrace that says, "I am a better person because I wear a Rolex vs. a $120 Timex". People will find all manner of ways to superficially validate themselves - clothes, cars, address, significant other, even pride in one's simplicity. I hope we can be better at simply enjoying the considerable material choices we have and respecting others' choices without the need to judge or stratify others. This stratification can go two ways in that a person can look down on another with less resources or can feel inferior to those with more resources. I am just glad we have so many choices in the audio arena (as well as in nearly every other consumer arena) and am glad that others get enjoyment and even fulfillment from how they spend their money, with the hope that such expenditures are not to assuage one's insecurities. If that is the case, then money is likely much better spent in other ways. There is, after all, so much need in the world that otherwise vainglorious money could help to address.

    • @KristiWright
      @KristiWright 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "This stratification can go two ways in that a person can look down on another with less resources or can feel inferior to those with more resources. I am just glad we have so many choices..."
      Well said and I couldn't agree more. We have an amazing amount of choice and are lucky that we can find enjoyment at any price point when it comes to audio. I feel you bring up a great point about the judgement going both ways. I see if often in our own comment section. The vilification goes both ways. Things like budget is never "budget enough" or spending more on high end is unwise or worse "stupid" is just about as common as the opposite. People would be so much happier if they could just be happy with what they have and let others do the same.

    I think you should understand the potential power of your comments while doing reviews. The ambiguity of comments such as “not embarrassed by” or “small aspects that are better” are strong teasers for some. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If a speaker is better, just say it’s better without adding on some little quip about the unexpected airiness or just a touch of clarity on this model. If you suddenly rocked up with a review of a six figure pair of speakers it would (to me) be amorphous when compared with your channel and what draws me to it. If anything, Wilson Audio needs the likes of you a lot more than you need the likes of them. The rest of us who would choose to put their kids through college as opposed to purchasing a pair of speakers get that. That’s why we tune in.

    Truly great review and discussion. My main beef with extremely expensive audio gear is that I think it is not that great an achievement to offer something that is really good for $20,000. At that price it should be good. What is really, really difficult is to offer reference-quality gear for affordable prices, which this product seems to do. (I own an older Polk tower and I am impressed by it).
    I have found that Tekton Design does a really good job of offering reference-level sound at affordable prices. I own the flagship--Ulfberht--which is not inexpensive, but most people find that the Double Impact offers astonishingly good sound at a reasonable price of $3K per pair. Also, many of Tekton's speakers--including the ones I just mentioned--employ an approach to sound reproduction that is really unusual. They use an array of tweeters to cover the midrange on the theory that tweeters can play down to 300hz IF you use a lot of of them, which ensures that no one tweeter has to work very hard. The result is an startling alive and unboxy midrange.
    I would love for you to review one of these Tekton Design speakers. I value your opinion.

    Andrew, great name by the way. I would like to add a few comments, especially regarding your wrap up with Christie. Firstly you and your team have an excellent, balanced podcast and one of the most important takeaways for me after watching a review is trust.
    What Christie said at the end was extremely intuitive and important. Your response was very raw and truthful and I fully respect you for that. I do however question your purpose and what you are trying to accomplish with your show. My comment may sound rather negative but it is not, it is to remind you that your podcast is more important now than ever. As Technology is now capable of delivering a high end, affordable Hi-Fi audio experience, it still needs confirmation and validation by someone like you, experienced and passionate about the Hi-Fi world.
    ‘the only person who has to like your system is you’, great byline. Too many people use cash as the deciding factor. But value is the most important element of any purchase or investment, and that value is tripled when you share it with someone special.

    It is a question that should be asked, as most enthusiasts in whichever space they partake of (watches, knives, cars, speakers, whatever...) tend to lose sight of the why they started the path; what got me IN TO this hobby? In this case, for me, its the high volume sound experience. Over time, I found myself chasing products of a caliber where I had lost the ability to discern real differences. I have owned and moved on from lots of expensive gear in order to upgrade to higher "tiers". Where did that get me? No where I needed to be. I am currently whittling that gear down into a mostly ambient (think Sonos, etc.) and paring my remaining main system down to something I can still enjoy. A sensible turntable (anyone want to buy my barely used Pro-Ject Xtension 10 with the Superpack!), something decent to stream music to that can change with the times, my very analog Yamaha integrated, and a set of fun speakers (currently Zu Defs, but might go Klipsch Heritage something). I think I will be happier, with quality gear that will last and gets me off the "critical listening" train. I just want to hear music in the background most times, and when I want more, its only because I want to hear music louder. A system that can do that without breaking into bits and pieces will suffice.

    Whatever you do, do not change the format of your channel. I have been an audiophile for more than 2 decades and, like you, a "recovering audiophile". The answer to your question about more expensive speakers is almost completely about feeding your ego. For most audiophiles, their entire existence is wrapped up in their ego and want the expensive system as self validation from personal insecurities...I know from personal experience. I used to have an ultra high end expensive system and it took a long time and a lot of wasted money to realize your ego will not be satisfied, no matter how much money you spend(which is why there is so much used hifi equipment). Once you separate your own ego from your hifi system, you will begin to see the truth. You have successfully jumped that shark and have self realization of the nonsense of the hobby. I actually have more personal satisfaction now realizing a great audio system can be achieved with far less money but more time spent on synergy and setup. I truly believe your channel can help 2 groups of people...Those entering the hobby looking for advice on true hifi equipment and those that have finally realized their expensive system does not bring them the sense of self importance they were hoping for. Case in point: Whenever I wear my Breitling watch, I have to pull out my iphone to set the correct time.

    Great video, particularly the latter discussion. I think we share a lot of evolution of our mindset and approach to this hobby. I know I struggle between finding the right balance sometimes and still find myself debating between levels of time and financial commitment in certain decisions. It's also such a nuanced conversation, because it is also somewhat means-based. Some people can afford luxury brands and things without a care, and so buying decisions can be made simply because one "wants it". My wife and I also experience gatekeeping before when house shopping. Dismissed because we were too young and just plain-looking I guess when we walked into a sales office for a new subdivision, amongst other things.

  • @tomgarrett2846

    To answer your question at the end, for me it would depend on the room. I am facing this decision at the present time. My wife and I are about to begin building a new home. My current speakers in my main listening room are Zu Audio Essence speakers. I like them a lot and I’m also aware of the criticism of those speakers. However, in the new room I’m considering speakers that will have a more pleasing finish and look because it will be a main room of the house. If I was in the market for new floor standing speakers in my current listening room I would probably buy the Polk R700s. In the new room, I would still consider them and would probably try to look and listen to them in person. My final decision will be a mixture of sound and appearance that will possibly cost more money.

I felt like I was trying to accomplish the best sound for what I could afford at the time while buying in to a higher echelon of hifi. It’s sound first and pride of ownership second. Love your channel, keep up the good work.

    I agree, the stands and midrange look terrible to me. I would pay more for a better fit and finish, but I’m very particular about the aesthetics because they are always in plain sight. Also great question Christie.

    Just can't wait to try them with my Ashly FDX series III, FTX-2001 ( mega MOSFET brick )
    Bad news is: , I am finding it almost impossible to get hold of a pair of these in the United Kingdom 😢

    The Focal Aria 926 towers are now the same price as the R700. Which one speaker do you prefer for a surround sound set up?

      I don’t know if my words will help you, but I have the Cora 826D . I don’t know how similar the 2 Focals are but mine are wonderful with my Onkyo RZ50 with a SVS 1000 Pro sub . Vocals on strongly accented foreign films were so clear . No more rewarding like we had to with a sound bar. In regards to the Polk R 700 I have a pair hooked up to a Rotel 1592 MKII. I haven’t enjoyed music like that that I can remember . I love the polis for music my Choras for voices like news movies etc. I also stream music using a Eversolo DMP A6 Master Edition . I enjoy music on both but a little more on the Polks . I’m so lucky I have both that give me what I want . This is my endgame setup I’m not looking for anything concerning receivers or speakers anymore. On peripheral prices like streamers turn table cartridges little things I will continue to look and buy but for the most part I’m done . I have a focal dealer near me and heard the Theivas which are a little fuller mid range a little more down lo than my Choras . The tweeter is different and I don’t recall from memory . I spent a pittance on my home they’re compared to my neighbors but they would never have known it unless I didn’t walk them through it

    Honestly, your reviews are without a doubt the most knowledgeable I’ve ever heard and without boasting that $80000 worth of gear is necessary. Not to mention your production quality is three times anyone else. You guys are literally the best and I never miss an episode. What am I looking for? Exactly! Idk and that’s why I watch you, because you heard the really expensive and the $200 a pair speakers and amps. You’ve helped me realize that overspending isn’t the answer to reference or near reference quality. For that, thank you.
