I just want to throw you some appreciation for this - after starting to care about keeping the older equipment around my house in better condition, I pulled out the SL-BD25 and all the matching gear from the stack that came out of my grandma's basement. Slowly going thru the rack and making sure everything is doing okay, and this video helped me solve two different issues I was having with the turntable! Can't thank you enough.
Very helpful, im on the way to rescued my granfathers model he gave up searching for the cartridge. Thanks for the info on this vid, i will take it like tutorial for service.
Thanks for this fix video! I just bought a used Technics BD20D from this random store that had some used electronics. I didn’t need a tt, but since I had 2 Technics BD22 new in the late 80’s, I sorta wanted to get this tt again bc they were great economical tts and i had for like 15 years without an issue. But the BD22 was like the higher model but made almost with the same mold and design. It had a different platter with tiny round circle and a speed adjust and a red lit speed indicator that’s not in this model.. This used one came with a dust cover and I was glad it stayed open on its own. Bc the BD22 when I got new in the box, the cover wouldn’t stay up. Since they both did that, I just kept and either took off, but always thought that was strange even if it were to go into a stereo system bc why have a cover and not stay open and had moving hinges. So I think they were a bad batch this discount place got and didn’t pass on to the customers. So back to my new used BD20D , so the guy said he hasn’t tested and probably got from the goodwill. He said he had for awhile but haven’t had time to test out. So since the belt was laying in the platter and I knew how to put back on. I plugged it in and took off the platter and put the belt back on and lifted the arm manually and it spinner. So thinking these were low maintenance, I figured it was only a belt issue. But looking back, the belts pretty easy to put back on and was taken off on purpose and didn’t just slip off and land on the top of the rubber platter may. So today I just plugged in to check it out some more and I.noticed the cue wasn’t working and look like it was stuck on lift up. Bc when I manually picked up the needle arm and moved to the center, it would pull back and bring back to the start and go back to the post. I tried a few more times and the same thing and I also noticed the needle was in the lift position and not go down to the platter (I didn’t have a record on the player) . So the thing that seems to lift the arm near the back, I pressed it down and it went down, but the needle still seem to not drop to the platter level. So I gotta figure out how to adjust the auto return and fix the cueing and make the needle go down to the platter/record. It’s cosmetically in great condition and I only paid $20 . for it and just the dust cover is worth that. But I don’t want another electronic item that needs repair and not working. I was afraid to get to the inner works, I had to take the bottom off, but good to know most are under the platter and those 3 screws under . I hope I can figure out which operates the auto return and cue up and down and to get the arm to go down and not stay in the cue lift state. Anyway, I save your video and look for other fixes for the tts. And hope someone had some interest in reading my long detail post. Thanks
I have the BD26U which is really similar. It hasn't been used in years and a spring on the bottom of the inside is out of place but I don't know where it is supposed to go. Everything in the video is the same as the model I have so hoping the inside looks similar. Thanks! The video was really helpful thus far
Great video. Need some assistance please. Need to replace my stylus... Ordered a new one but see that my stylus and cartridge are one piece. Mine is a P24. Where and what do I need to order as a replacement? I've been searching but can't seem to find the correct item. Thanks.
Thanks for your video! I just got one of these turntables and it helped me a ton as a noob to the scene. Something you didn't address in the video: Do these units require a grounding cable? I don't see any clear connectors on the machine.
Just been gifted a Technics, and it needs repair (which is why i'm here). Mine is an SL-DD22 and has a grounding cable, though for this model i'm not sure. If there is a spot to plug something in next to where your stereo cables go, then yes you need a grounding cable.
These models do not have a separate grounding wire. You can get away without one, especially when the TT is mostly plastic anyway. If you do get some hum, you can add a ground wire internally to see if it helps.
My used BD20D came with a ground but has issues. If you look on the back where the plug and line out goes in, there should be another hole for the ground plug. If yours didn’t come with one. I think you can buy a ground but has to have this plug type made for this tt. Most tts I’ve had needed to be grounded and I had grounded. Yes, you may not need it for this model, but the option should be on most tts. Many get lost when bought used and I’m lucky the one I just got had it connected to the unit with the removable plug. I think most ground wire is a open end wire or a clip like end that you screw on to old receivers, but I think you can make one like on this case with the unique plug in style ground. I’ve bought used tts with a homemade ground wire and not sure what kind of wire you have to use or if it just needed to be connected by a wire.
Great video! I have an SL-B260 and the 33 rpm speed works fine however when I switch to 45 rpm the speed is inconsistent. It slows down then speeds up over and over again. Any suggestions?
It sounds like an issue with the DC servo circuit in the motor. IIRC, this unit has all of that self-contained in the motor, so the only solution is to replace it.
You can even upgrade this Technics P24 with a high end Stylus with Hyperelliptic cut, Shibata cut or SAS cut, this head is really good. I have a Grundig PS 2600 Fully automatic Turntable with a P24, it even has Anti Skating and Adjustable weight.
I haven't seen you do any servicing. Never saying what type of oil to use on it. Like can you use 3n1 oil or a less thick type of oil. But you did show where these things are located on the TT.
Very helpful, thank you! I just got one for free from an aquaintance (I was about to pay for a different model). Any tips on where to find a proper dust cover or dust cover diy tips? The everything works great, I just need a cartridge, stylus, dust cover, and pre-amp!
Dust covers are a little hard to come by. These were often sold as part of a complete system that had it's own cabinet with a cover. The TT itself did not have it's own cover. I've seen these pop up on eBay once in a while with a cover, but I've never seen just a cover sold. Some eBay vendors will make acrylic covers to specification, but they are pricey.
Great Video - I have a Techinics SL-BD22 - it was working great until two days ago and then it stopped spinning - the belt looks to be tight on it but the arm doesn't start the plater turning. Would you have any idea what could be the cause of this?
Great video and almost everything I was looking for. I'm trying to use my father-in-laws SL-BD22 (almost identical to this one) and the piston that raises or lowers the tone arm won't move. It hasn't been used in a very long time and I've read that it might need some more lubrication. Any ideas how I can do this?
I just a long detailed post on this used DB20D that seem to be stuck on the auto return function when I lift the needle and will not drop to the platter and stays in the up position. The cue also seems to be broken and won’t go up and down and stuck on up. Thanks again for the video and showing most of the movements are under the platter and I’ll try to adjust and see if I can fix the cue function bc it’s it seems to be telling the tt that it’s at the end of the record or that it’s on the stop to return function. Oh and what kind of lube do you use and where can you get it? Thanks
The BD22 is great and I had 2 I bought new in 1987 and they were workhorses and had them for about 15 urs with no issue. When we’re still in great working condition when I sold them and like new condition. The only issue I had from the beginning was the dust cover never stayed up but since both were like that from new, I just kept and figured the place I got them got some bad ones. Bc why have dist covers and they don’t stay up?! So I just bought a used BD20D for only $20. and the first thing o checked out was the duet cover and it stayed up. But it’s has some issues and the cue is broken and stuck on the lift position. Also, when I manually lift the needle, it automatically swings back to the start position and the needle won’t go down to the record. So I’m hoping this is all a stuck cueing issue, but I’m not sure which place to look to adjust that. Someone who’s selling one of these said they had a curing issue but don’t show how he fixed it. Bc the cueing button is at the front and not sure if I have to take the bottom plate off to get to the cue switch or if the gears under the platter has anything to do with that. I’ll keep looking and reading on these turntable fixes and looks like techinics made this same tt for many years and just change the model number. But the BD22 was the higher model with the pitch control, red light speed indicator and the platter with the round circles like the Technics 1200 MK2 for djs.
I have this same model, only, the auto return doesn’t work. How do you fix/diagnose that problem? I just raise the cue and move the tone arm to the rest position and drop the cue.
Hello Mr. Amorphous, i have a problem with a turntable like this in the drive motor, i send to the technician and he told me he had troubles to fine the motor replacement. Would you mind tell me the part number of this motor or where i can buy one? Thanks in avance for your help.
I don't have a part number, but this turntable uses a fairly basic mechanism. A generic replacement motor from a modern turntable could be made to work.
I got one of these from my neighbor and the cuing isn't working. It leave the arm floating in the air no matter how you set it, any idea where to start with that?
Hello. I do have something a tad similar; the SL-B250. It’s the same except the plug mentioned (which is nothing but a peephole) and that the auto return mechanism is covered by the base (when the platter is removed) Some issues I’ve been encountering is the auto-return; it stops midway of a record, yet does not seem to return to the rest (lands on the edge of the platter; there is NO start function since it is semi-automatic)
It sounds like the trigger point for the auto-return is waaaay off...or something else is broken. I've had a few people asking about this one, so I might take it apart.
Yeah and the one I just got used when I lift the needle over the platter with no record, the auto return brings the arm back. I tried this several times and the same thing and the needle don’t also seem to go down to the platter and stuck on the up position. Also my cue seems to be broken or stick on the up position and maybe why it triggers the Siri retirn and not going done to the platter/record. Well, I haven’t tried it on a record bc I don’t want to damage and I have another tt I used and actually like better that this one bc it’s from 1976 and built like a tank and heavy. I’m wonder if the gears under the platter are the ones I need to adjust to get the cue working again or if I have to take the bottom off to get to the cue switch. I just don’t want to take things apart and not know what I’m doing and in the wrong place. I guess I can look for the service manual online, but I hate manuals also. Lol!
Hello, so mine is currently skating pretty bad. I replaced the needle but that of course didn’t help. How would I know how much to tighten it loosen the knob on the back?
Hi man, sorry to bother, but, Is there a way to troubleshoot this model?, I got my grandpa's turntable and it's this exact model, but it doesn't turn on even after I replaced the belt, it isn't really in bad shape nor does it have oxidation, tbh aside from some dust it apparently is in mint condition, the return mechanism works fine, it's just the spinning that doesn't work, would really appreciate if you could show me a manual or guide on how to approach this issue, great video, hope you see this
If the platter does not start moving when you move the tone-arm toward the platter, then there could be an issue with the power switch, the linkage that triggers the power switch, the power supply, or the motor itself. Most of that is located under the tonearm IIRC, which I didn't show in the video.
Also, check and see if the motor for the belt is spinning bc it may be bad. The part the belt goes onto and spins the platter. Mine spins the platter but the auto return activated when I put the needle on the platter and won’t drop onto the record. Also my cue seems to not work and stuck on the lift mode and why it’s not dropping in the platter and stays up and the auto return activated. Well, I just moved the cue button up and down when unplugged and it works. So I’ll try it out tomorrow bc it’s getting super late and see if still does the auto return and won’t drop on the record.
I have an Sl-bd27u and it was running at around 32.1 rpm according to rpm calculator on my phone. I adjusted the speed and it's running at 33.2 to 33.4 which I can accept. When I set it to 45 it is running to well over 48 rpm. Are the speed adjustments separate or do they work together? Is one a fine tune and the other a larger adjustment or is one 33 and one 45?
Sometimes they are separate controls and sometimes they are additive. In other words, one control affects both speeds and the other adjusts only one. The one you adjusted obviously affected both, so the other probably affects only one (might either be 33 or 45, depending on the circuit).
On my SL-BD27U, the trimpot screw closest to the stabilizing foot adjusted the 33.3 RPM speed, and the one further from the foot adjusted the 45 RPM speed. Had to check a couple times to make sure. I used a 3/32" (2.38mm) flat screwdriver to make the adjustment.
Hello I have this same model, yet when i play records it plays but the sound sounds a bit slow and sometimes the sound sounds odd, and the record is clean. Any suggestions?
Chances are the tone arm is being gently pushed to the resting position and therefore create skating. Combined with enough pressure on the stilus you should listen to the record but slower due to the friction
I tried using my Technics SL-BD22 FGservo turntable that I had not taken out of it's storage box, after several local moves. I tried playing about 6 LP records. On almost all of them, both sides, I found the needle would skip and repeat audio, when the needle had played approximately 3/4 of the material. I could not see any dust or abrasions on the records or needle to account for what happened. The cartridge installed is an audio technica 2002. Is that a common problem? Any suggestions re next steps?
It sounds like the automatic return mechanism might be catching somehow. Remove the platter and see if it is catching somehow. Maybe the grease has dried up.
@@AmorphousAudio Thank you for the suggestion. I have noticed a few other things that may be related to the return mechanism. The tone arm often does not return. I often have trouble trying to cue the record and the tone arm will return while trying to cue the record. On the turntable I have, removing the platter did not expose very much of the return mechanism. Most of the housing still covered the return mechanism. However there was a small opening that exposed the part that moves over at the end of the record as referenced in your video. Every thing I was able to look at moved freely.
Were you able to fix the issue then? I've had the identical issue that you had. I thought about applying grease as suggested above, but where would you apply that? My turntable also has most of the return covered up by the plastic housing or casing of the turntable beneath the platter.
@@kerrykeith4740 No, I never did fix the problem. Somewhere I saw a reference to the plastic adjustment screw. When I tried turning that I broke it off. For the time being I am using Spotify, but things just don't sound the same. I am at the age where I would like to downsize and resist bring anything new into the house. Everything seemed pretty loose to me, and was not convinced l should lubricate the mechanism. I do not plan any further attempts to fix this myself.
gotcha, well if it helps, the turntable I had, I bought locally off of Facebook Marketplace, and it worked well for about 2 years before the skipping problem. If I can't fix it, I may look for another, because I paid only about 30 bucks for this one. If I fix the problem, I'll post on here what I did.
the tone arm on my unit won't advance past half the record. As soon as it reaches about half way down the record it will repeat & when I try to start a record about mid record or more the tone arm will return and won't let me play. Any ideas what's going on here?
Hello brother, hey I have the same turntable but my cartridge was lost. Do you know of any cartridge that is currently sold that is compatible with this model “technics p24”? I would appreciate your answer!
You can use any P-mount (T4P) cartridge with this TT. P-mount is handy as it is supposed to be "plug ang play". Audio-Technica is still making the AT-30x P-mounts and Grado, LP Gear and a few other brands also offer them.

Mine was varying its speed, I used some contact cleaner on the potentiometer behind the speed adjust wheel and it fixed it
How to set it to 1.5 I mean if is no numbers how should I know? I have same turntable and no cover on back of arm like yours.thank you
Buy a digital tracking force gauge. They can be found on Amazon for $10-$15.
It sounds like that auto-return is way out of adjustment. Try turning the screw I mentioned in the video.
@@AmorphousAudio thanks. I tried that but I'll keep trying.
Im looking for a replacement cart for the tabel what would you recommend
Any p-mount cartridge will work. I like the Audio Technica AT85EP, but there some new ones out there that might be worth a look.
@@AmorphousAudio thanks
Do you know if this turntable requires a pre-amp?
Yes it requires a pre-amp or receiver/amp with phone input.
They certainly did.
Mine buzzes but it doesn't spin
