I think Filipinos are more open to love teams or their idols' love lives because that's the fantasy. To be able to love freely and be happy. On the other hand, in Korea, what sells is the fantasy that their idols can be their ideal partner/type and so when linked to other artists, the fantasy dies. The pressure on Korean artists to be perfect and spotless is immensely high and it's kinda sad that they don't get to live their truths and only focus on work until they've reached a certain status or age.

as someone who’s experienced both cultures I totally agree with you.
in Korea given the fact that agency tryna conceal that their artists are in relationship for the sake of not losing the fans, it’s pretty obvious the artist itself has became a product.
I wish we also have love team like katniel.

even as a kid who was obsessed with KathNiel, i was always skeptical about the loveteam culture because it hinders so much of either actors' acting ranges. maybe since i was also exposed to western media, i never expected any of the love teams to actually get together and i always get frustrated that they never do any other movie except romance movies. the little kid that i was would've loved to see Daniel Padilla in an action movie or Kathryn Bernardo in maybe a thriller movie. as happy as i am for them that they're actually together, i wish their identities as actors weren't established as a "love" team.

Entertainment company in Korea somehow support the attitude of the fans, where they fantasize they own their idols, because it brings money by buying different sorts of merchandise. Korean industry is blooming right now is not because of the structure but audiences around the world are just burned-out of their local Entertainment industry like in Pinoy, sawa na sa mga palabas. Filipino just like good stories and we suport foreign movie like mexican telenovela before and now korean film. Majority of the filipino watching the korean movie/series dont even care about the names of the actors exccept of filipino diehard fan.

As for scandals and dramas, Filipinos love them. And Filipino celebrities have no problem airing their dirty laundry and drama on national TV. Celebrities can have fights on TV, they can bash each other, criticize each other, etc. And we are all living for it. We do not expect an “apology” from them. We like that they are expressing their real thoughts and showing their true feelings. We are more skeptical of people who try to hide these. In fact, we have a derogatory phrase for that. We say “ang showbiz mo naman” when someone tries to be diplomatic rather than real.
Think of the Philippines as a huge, small village where everyone’s business is everyone’s business. It’s why we love tsismis, Mariteses, and all. The Philippines is just like a household of more than 100 million. Hahaha. Personal individual space could take the backseat but we treat each other like roommates, regardless of your social status or whether or not you’re a celebrity. We talk about the lives of celebrities in the same way we talk about the lives of our next door neighbors. Hahaha.

For me, when i was first heard about dating issues of celebrities in Korea. I find it so Absorbed that fans, or marjority of the people especially the media in Korea think that it is a "Scandal" of celebrities in Korea if they date someone especially if that someone is outside showbiz. And this might be sounds offended but, i think it's so close minded for the people to think of that as a scandal and i was like "what? What kind of thinking of is that?"

the difference is love teams here in philippines is that, when the couple is together they admire their sweet actions and romance. but in korea. especially when it comes to idol, most fans fantasize themselves with the idol. thats when if rumours are spread they bash the idol or feel betrayed.

With the celebrities in the Philippines, especially with love teams, we relate to them.
We treat them like the friends or family that we look up to, and that we admire them
for the things that they do and the things that they've achieved. For the most part.
With Korean celebrities, they foster this thing called "Parasocial Relationships"
which is basically an unhealthy one-sided relationship where one is completely
unaware of the existence of the other. This is the standard relationship that idol
agencies aim to foster for their talents, and it really should be stopped, as it leads to
disgustingly obsessed and outright delusional fanatics that are just oozing with toxicity.
It's not good for the talents, nor is it good for the fans.
The only thing it's good for is making money for the corporations.
Meaning, that it's borderline abuse on both the talents and the fans.
So, just never support anything that encourages parasocial relationships.

Seems like Jessica knows what she’s talking about. Love teams are definitely a thing in the Philippines and the fandoms are often in large numbers and can be toxic from time to time. In South Korea, it appears as though celebrities tend to be much more secretive about their personal lives.

In the PH, it’s hard for people marketed as a love team to date outside of the love team because it affects their options/offers but many have been able to traverse that and succeed beyond love teams. Also, while dating publicly makes them subject to public scrutiny and judgment, Filipinos are also very generally forgiving. We might cancel a celebrity this year but given enough supporters in the industry or the fan base and they’d still get to continue having careers despite drunken behavior, fights, messy breakups, kid out of wedlock, marriage breakdown, infidelity… heck, even outright crimes.
Which is why I feel for Korean celebs. I think they generally work so much harder (if you consider the trainee system) but get less percentage profit from work they do and they have to kowtow so much to public opinion/approval. I hear of celebs who even get canceled for being bratty in their elementary days (and some were just falsely accused).
Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s relationship was supported because HB has largely not played into the “boyfriend fantasy” and they’re already both 40. Kinda about time to date, marry and have a kid.

One of the reason why I started liking kdrama (like waaaay back in the day) because the main leads/partners, always change and it’s not that it doesn’t happen too in the PH, I really like Kathryn and Alden’s movie, Maine and Carlo Aquino’s movie (where Carlo portrayed a man who’s mute/deaf or both, not sure, I’ve watched it before pa, nakalimutan ko na but, he’s really good there) and Jennylyn and Derek’s movie, to name a few. It’s not that I don’t watch love teams that are real life partners because those are fun to watch too, but it’s fun if they would do projects outside their love teams and it’ll be a good learning experience for the artists as well.

  • @itsaudreyTV

Celebrities in Korea position themselves as products that must be likeable and something that the public aspires to have. It is very apparent in newbie idols, who are trying to catch the public's attention, "oh oppa this, oppa that" or "noona this, noona that" or making those ridiculous "aegyo". This stuff is cute, especially at the beginning of their career, where they are young and just want to be successful. This is where Filipinos think "oppa" in dramas has a certain meaning. I remember there was a time when K-creators talk about how they hate the connotation of "oppa" portrayed in the drama, that it is different from real life as if they are trying to break that idea of "oppa" by non-Koreans. Scandal about a love lost doesn't always have to be negative. It can be just about individual growth. Koreans like to suppress these emotions, which is why there are scandals about prostitutes and idols, because they can't freely date. Uhm, that, or they just don't want the responsibility involved in dating. I think Korean celebrities do date, but in secret. Just because nobody talks about it, it doesn't mean it is not happening.
For love teams in the Philippines, I think because generally, life is hard for most Filipinos that selling a fantasy around love, not just young love, makes these movies or teleseryes easy to consume for Filipinos. Indie movies from the Philippines don't get seen or make any money at all. Filipinos don't want to watch serious and hard movies about the PH, Filipinos live it every day. They just want to be entertained and forget about life's problems. Filipinos are crazy about love. The feeling is beautiful, even if the music is about sad love songs, it's still relatable to EVERYONE. I also hate the idea of love teams, I see it as a limitation to what real actors can do. Before KathNiel, it was Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, and we all know how that panned out. In most cases, the girl always ends up with a flourishing career while the male actor will struggle. I think this is where Star Magic is being careful with KathNiel, because Kathryn is such a well-loved actress, but then Daniel comes from a lineage of serious and influential actors/family.
Young love is normal. Dating is part of growing up. It is normal to date. For PH love teams, reel life just got real. If you work closely alongside each other for so long and act as if you are indeed in love, it is easier to blur those lines of reel versus real. It has happened in other countries too, where actors meet on set and fall in love, not just in the PH.

Im actually in that side of group of skepticals when it comes to love teams here in the PH. But I loveeee a good romantic movie! Sometimes I wonder why love team couples are forced always to act with each other and wondered why we cant copy South Korea pairings, chemistries with different pairings are so good. Thats why I was so happy when ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye’ came out it was Kathniel and Alden Richards which are from two different agencies. Wish we could normalize this! We can see more actors and actress shine.

The reason why idols/actors cannot date is because they are public figures for consumers (i.e. their stans or fandoms) to push their parasocial fantasies to. They need to exude an availability as imaginary boyfriend/girlfriend to their fans, to keep them loyal and support them via buying their merchandise, advertisements, songs, dramas, etc.
Popularity has a direct relationship to this reputation of being pure AND available.
The Korean industry recognizes this and pushes this relationship between a celebrity and a fan, even though it (sometimes) objectifies the person, by normalizing being obsessive and possessive over their idols and biases.

Love teams is/are work ,job it's a concept to create and be invested in 2 actors actress it would work if the 2 individual have a genuine chemistry it doesn't necessarily mean their in real relationship ,it's to create a believable interaction also it's not limited to heterosexual team up,girl/girl or boy/boy but heterosexual team has more general appeal!..as long as this individual and chemistry on screen is good it works.

The key phrase is "difference in attachment to on-screen couples". That's why in Korea celebrities can be paired with each other in each movie/TV show so easily, while in the Philippines, it would take a number of movies/TV shows before audiences can grow tired of a love team and by then celebrities can only be paired with other celebrities.

    Great arguments, Jessica!
One thing you forgot to mention is the influence of Latin culture in the Philippines. You will notice that the promotion of romantic love is strong in societies influenced by Latin culture. In countries like, say, Japan, marriage can be transactional. In fact, they have an actual concept for that. Same with India.
In the Philippines, Filipinos are expected to “romantically love” their partners. It’s frowned upon by society if you’re marrying someone for money or status, etc., although personally I don’t have a problem with transactional relationships. It’s just we Filipinos, when it comes to relationships, are given the freedom to choose our partners according to our preferences without too much societal pressure, which is why same sex couples are pretty much open here as well.
Finally, Filipinos are collectivistic. We see other Filipinos as an extension of ourselves. It’s why if a Filipino succeeds elsewhere, the entire country goes all fiesta. We feel like their success is ours. If a Filipino embarrasses himself, then we feel collective shame and embarrassment, too. So when we see love teams, I feel like Filipinos see themselves in them. Hence, the kilig.
Recently though, I feel like the showbiz industry has began to manufacture love teams. Honestly, I am not a fan of this. I prefer love teams that are genuine.

I think one factor why Filipinos love loveteams is because of the word "Kilig" I don't know if that word has a Hangugeo counterpart. I think, filipinos love to feel kilig so they look for that kilig factor everywhere especially in the media. That's why, they also ship people together. They love romance. They don't want it to end. They want more of it. That's why the shipping of love teams go further even after the curtain falls. And I think, the reason why filipinos are more accepting of celebrities dating is because they are open-minded about it. Whereas in Korea, aside from the reasons in this video, I think, some tend to be possessive of their biases. Because they tend to be too intense in supporting their biases so they get jealous if they would be dating. You know, the 'it should have been me.' They feel betrayed. Honestly, I really don't know about Korean society. That's just the explanation I read in a webtoon about idol dating. I read it in True beauty.

How would you explain the plot and themes of kdramas? A lot of Filipinos actually even people worldwide gravitate to it - I think because of the same concept of love teams - the fantasy! So I think it’s quite ironic that kdramas seem to be the expert in making this fantasy almost a reality - for a society that you say is not too much into “loveteams” or the concept of it. Celebrities' dating is common because physical attractions tend to build up between couples on screen, stage, etc., being together. That's a human tendency among personalities. Fans are not only after their performances but want to dig more into the juicy bits of their 'private lives'. When something goes wrong, the fans' awareness accelerates, and the rating goes high. That's a fact. Generally, dating is good because a couple would know each other very well either "opposites attract" or not. Dating also nurtures real loving feelings that eventually grows and leads to marriage. The only drawback I see is if during the relationship there was physical love, and a break-up happened; the girl normally loses her chastity. Let's face it, that's what most people have in mind. For liberated girls, that would not be the case. I believe girls should always draw the line. Boys remain "boys".

I'm not really a fan of the love team culture in the phils. Having been exposed to both entertainment culture between the 2 countries, i hope there comes a new culture where it adapts the best of both worlds. Ph showbiz, would mostly care abt the loveteam regardless if it's a good or mediocre project for them whereas in the korean industry, it is the actor's craft that always matters. How i wish to see young actors in PH act more in projects where it needs more depths in acting. This is not discounting the fact that there were few celebrities who also became respectable actors without a loveteam. I just want to see more of that. Lastly, how i also wish to see the korean society be more accepting of their celebrities' dating life.

i think one of the reasons why kpop idols' or celebs' lovelife is an issue in korea is the mentality or concept that idols/celebs are "girlfriend or boyfriend material" for their fans in which is why sasaengs exist.... i just observe especially in kpop that mostly of fans fantasize their idols as their own oppa/noona in which some gets to the extent that they dont just fantasize but also do some insane stuffs (though it also happens in any celebrities all over the world, but i think kpop and kdrama fans takes it to another level)... idols/actors/actresses in kpop and kdramas where subjected as imaginary boyfriend/girlfriend... i dont completely know everything about korean entertainment but as a fan i can observe it from fellow fans of it...

it's more lenient in the Philippines, as long as it doesn't get in the way of their work, being a real-life couple can be a double-edged sword for the on/off-screen couple, like it can benefit for publicity when their relationship is going well, fans follow them like crazy, but when their relationship didn't work out, fans don't see them same way on-screen, it loses that illusion for them

Based on my observation, korean actors/idols after having a couple or announce to get married lose their fame and spotlight in industry.Yes, I have noticed that the Korean ent. support fan fantasy because they are the source of income. Good news is that if an actor or idolgets married or starts a family in the future, their lives will be secure since I know they
will buy some property and start a business.
Even though I'm a devoted fan, I don't want to give them all of my money, so every time they release a comeback, I learn to budget. We can't deny that not all fans are wealthy and stable in life. So that is why some idols like Svt Jeonghan and Red velvet Seulgi says to fan dont put all your money to us to buy album or concert tickets, treat yourself and eat delicious food🙂that words melts my heart😍

I think its better if you do talk show coz you are really good in explaining every topic you discuss. You explained it very clearly and essily to understand. And base on your explanations beetween two countries. Fans in korea are not yet open minded to accept the fact that their idols are also a humans they need a loveones. Hehe🥰

This particular content is quite interesting both for Filipino and Korean entertainment industry in particular. Personally I'm not against the way our entertainment industry here in the Philippines managed their respective celebrities to be in spotlight were fans are also very supportive maybe because Filipinos are fun loving and open minded. Another thing is we belong to a democratic country ( it depends on how you perceive). Filipinos in general values the word RESPECT and FREEDOM as humans. specially on matters concerning private life or relationship in particular. As celebrities they should be mindful of all their actions, words and etc. as they were idolized by millions of people (including the young ones) around the globe.

Here is the thing i found out about dating a filipino guy as a chinese. my bf is rlly popular around girls and even guys. But the people in the philippines; even though they know he is dating me, they still ship him with other girls, stalk him, say things like “i’ll still try to win your heart”, so the word “respect” is completely out of the picture. I actually up grew up in a western country, so seeing these things and dealing with them is rlly annoying. Im not trying to generalise, but every filipino person i met was like that and didn’t respect the fact that i was dating him. I think they take shipping people to a whole new level and i feel rlly upset about it.

I agree with Jessica’s observations. Another big factor to why Love Team works more in the Philippines vs in S. Korea is because Filipinos gravitate towards FAMILIAR things and we are not that open to new things. Just like some of our LTs who are not exactly good actors but are popular because they are familiar/nakasanayan. Even our government are full of trapos that we just rinse and re-use even though they don’t have the credentials and most even have cases filed against them. I’m willing to sacrifice our Love Teams if we can get better, TRUE CIVIL SERVANTS.
