- 🇦🇹 St Gilgen is a small village in Austria situated at beautiful Wolfgangsee. In this Austria travel walking tour I show you where you can spend the best vacation in Austria or go for the best day tour in Austria. Sankt Gilgen is situated in the north-western shore of the lake Wolfgangsee, close to Strobl and to the Upper Austrian municipality of St. Wolfgang. It has 3,784 inhabitants, lies 545 metres above sea level and covers an area of 98.67 square kilometres. St. Gilgen is a well-known travel destination. Boats from St. Gilgen sail around the Wolfgangsee, providing transport and views of the surrounding mountains. The hermitage of the original St. Gilgen may be seen, behind a chapel, in the Falkenstein cliffs west of St. Wolfgang and east of Fürberg.
In 2005 St. Gilgen was promoted as the "Mozart Village" by the Wolfgangsee Tourist Board. Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart never visited St. Gilgen (as he had intended to), his grandfather worked in the town, his mother was born in St. Gilgen, and his sister Nannerl moved there after her marriage. The village now boasts a first-class international school, the St. Gilgen International School.
The Salzkammergut (or Salzburger Land) is a particularly attractive region to visit in Austria. So plan to do a travel walking tour in the most beautiful village in Austria, or hike the Alpine mountains, or swim in beautiful lakes during your next Austria vacation ('Österreich Urlaub' in German). There are so many things to do in Salzburg and the surrounding Salzkammergut region that you don't want to miss.

We always enjoy your excellent travel shows Janus. You should look to get a food and travel show contract, with one of the local media outlets. We are looking to open up a small medical clinic and thought St. Gilgen is less touristy but that St. Wolfgangsee is more beautiful. What are your thoughts?

Wow - a really picture postcard village with lovely designs painted on the buildings. I noticed an Almdudler umbrella at one of the cafes - it would be lovely to sip an Almdudler sitting in the sun enjoying that view....difficult to buy on my side of the world :)

That’s indeed a tough choice 😅
St Gilgen might be slightly less busy. But the good news is that both are fairly close to each other and there’s a direct boat link between the two

Many thanks NZ. This was recorded in summer and it’s too warm for snow there. You will have to go all the way up to Dachstein glacier to find snow in the summer. I actually was planning to go but ended up skipping it due to bad weather. The weather is very unpredictable in the mountains

When compared which town is more beautiful; Lungern or St Gilgen
Thank you very much. That’s a difficult comparison. I’d say St. Gilgen is more quaint and interesting as a small town but the color of Lake Lungern is quite magical. I’d say try to go see both 😊

Thank you Dina, yes, all these villages and towns are reachable by bus. Depending on how much time you have it is however more flexible to rent a car in Salzburg. If you start from Salzburg, the order of places for a perfect tour would be: Fuschl, St Gilgen, St Wolfgang, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Gosau, Altaussee, Grundlsee, Gmunden -> back to Salzburg

Hi great video,I am gonna travel in 1st week of may any idea how would be the weather in Salzburg and Vienna? And where do you think I should stay considering my 4 years old daughter, hallstat, Salzburg or wolfgang?
The weather is unpredictable in this region. You can be lucky or it can be quite rainy. In terms of places to stay, I would look at Salzburg if you like cities. If you prefer small towns I would look at Fuschl, St Gilgen and Bad Ischl.

it looks like st gilgen is a perfect base for lake district .. but always cannot find any vacancy in airbnb for st gilgen
That’s true, it’s perfectly positioned to make it a base and visit the whole region from there. I usually stay just 10 minutes north in Fuschl am See which is really beautiful and a bit less known. You might have better chances there. Will share a video on Fuschl in the coming weeks 👍🌺

Hi Andy, that’s a tough call. It will definitely look much different in winter. You will either get lots of rain or (preferably) snow 😊

That’s a good question. I think the WW2 bombing focused mostly on larger cities and military installations. I would assume that St Gilgen was not considered a very strategically relevant place and was spared.
How's the weather in mid-October? Will it be still as nice?
The weather is very unpredictable there. You can be lucky with some super sunny days and you can also walk through the rain. Generally, the Salzburg area is generally known to be more on the rainy side
What are choices available for vegans... I mean is there variety of it... In Switz and Austria,,...,,
That’s a great question. Austrian cuisine does contain a lot of meat. But you find amazing potato dishes, soups and salads. I read that over 10% of Austrians are vegetarians or vegans so must restaurants carry options for them. Definitely try the many yummy dessert dishes there 👍😋
