This brings back a lot of memories. I saw this incredible plane in the summer of 1965 at an air show at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth. The air show ended with the XB-70 taking off into "the wild blue yonder". Quite an experience for a 9 year old boy!!
In 1963 I was lucky enough to go on a Boy Scout field trip to Edwards. It was the same week the great Chuck Yeager had his accident and Pres.Johnson revealed the A-11.The B-70 was sitting on the flight line when they took us on a tour of they Hangers. What surprised all of us was the size of the plane.Compared to the rest of the aircraft it was tall and huge for such an advanced aircraft.
and to think that only 20 years before the first flight was middle of WWII. Going "supersonic" was if a pilot took a P51 into a highspeed dive and would begin losing pitch control on horizontal stablizer because flow after shockwave would be nothing for the elevator. and we had men walking the surface of the moon five years after XB70 first flight.
This is 1960s America embodied. Lines as graceful as a swan coupled with insane amount of engine and even more insane levels of power. Basically a Plymouth Hemi Cuda with wings.
70,000 feet at Mach 3. And to think, this thing was built in the 60s! To this day it looks like something out of the future. Such a shame it wasn't really a successful project.
Of the two of these that were built one was destroyed in an accident the second one Still Remains it is on display at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio at the Air Force Museum it is unbelievable how huge this thing is
Reminds me of standing next to Saturn 5 in Houston Space Center !!! Both are "Huge" machines !!! Been trying to get up to Dayton agin was a little boy last time !!! I saw this monster of a plane !!!
What's cooler - that our military declassified actual flight test audio and video, or people like us are watching it? How are the engines at 100% (and one oversped at 108%) when it was traveling well below supersonic with the gear down? Was it at military power during takeoff? I guess afterburners need to be used Mach1 and above?
What a beautiful aircraft. The first thing that hit me when I saw this plane many years ago was the incredible size of it!! Huge!!! (Especially for its day) 🇺🇸Grandpa🇺🇸 Edit: Many thanks for the upload!! Hit the 👍 button gang!
How about that low pass of T38 captured by cameraman at 24:53, it's as of its landing gear could have bonked him on the head. Shortly after you see the gray haired guys shaking hands with pilots as they exit the aircraft. Imagine for them their career in aviation began with wooden airplanes and the "flight test instrumentation" was how good the pilot can tell you about what he can remember of throttle, rpm, airspeed, attitude, etc throughout the flight.
@@johnquest3102 You can see the door outline at 17:42. It's the long rectangular area between the main landing gear, behind the nose gear, and ahead of the engines. There are 2 compartments. The Promo film was done in 50s music... yet the plane transcends time as the XB-70 exudes futuristic looks to the present time after other planes such as Concorde and the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird has come and gone...
Great video of an over fraught albatross. Unit production cost in modern dollars could build 5 Artemis rockets for a moon launch. Lockheed and Boeing have returned to wide body supersonic research after 50 years.
The MiG-25 flew years after the B-70 was canceled as a weapons system, and the T4, which only slightly resembles the American plane, even years after that. In fact, by the time the T4 first flew, the B-70 had been sitting in museum for a couple of years.
Not stealthy at all. Look at all those 90 degree angles and huge flat panels. In fact, the loss of viability for the mission planned for XB-70 is what cancelled this aircraft, and also what lead to attempting stealth as an option instead.

Funny, I was thinking at least one chase airman would have remarked on how clean she looked at exactly the moment you posted. I guess that wouldn't have been professional but they all thought it.
Somebody mixed films on this one. This is the flight for certification for continued testing and certification for airline service...THIS IS NOT THE FIRST FLIGHT FILM! We already tested the Valkyrie for several thousand hours before this filmed flight. This is the actual first flight of 2001. There were three made before this one shown
@@machupikachu1085 there were actually 10 built. Three that were actually talked about at the time...top secret at the time”. Now it doesn’t matter . I test flew two of them. I even flew in a comparative flight against the Concord over Arizona. When the Concord snuck over to do a round the world flight.....With the Valkyrie capable of reaching Mach 3 the Concord never had a chance 😃. The other Valkyries were used in limited demonstrations and other purposes around the world. The Valkyrie was never meant to be a bomber or military or assault aircraft of any kind

I was there, too. But I really can't remember much about it. However, *it was in March of 1966.*
My god that was a beautiful aircraft. Decades later is still looks like "the future".
I was about to say the same thing, that it's so strange to say that "That was the future".

@@jameswsomers are you sure about that date? The Tab-Aero book on the plane has roll out in May of 1964.

The XB-70 is the most impressive aircraft ever build. Wish I had seen this monster flying in person. Thanks for the video! :)
outstanding!
imho the most beautiful aircraft ever to fly, this and the sr71 were my top 2 ;-)
Probably because they're the only 2 you know
Pure BADASS, LOVE XB-70
What beautifully controlled touchdowns by the test pilot. Textbook perfect. What an aviator. RESPECT.
Wonderful, ahead of it’s time aircraft with a very sad ending.....
Looks like something out of THUNDERBIRDS (Are Go) Very nice lines
One the better pilots to control team dialogues!
Amazing aircraft. You have to see it in person at the USAF museum to really appreciate how impressive it is.

10:24 love the views to the plane.
Imagine a fleet of B70's escorted by squadrons of the fighter version of the SR71. What a sight and sound that would have been!
SR-71 doesn't have the B-70's range, so it wouldn't have been able to escort the bomber.

Nice looking aircraft. However, where would the weapons bay be?
The air intakes do not get any larger front to back . Huge area for bombs beside engine air path .
I have NEVER seen the bomb bay depicted, no open door shot, nothing in any literature or photos.

What Soviet project would it be better than? Also, why would anyone want to bring back an airplane that was rejected over half a century ago?
Folding wingtips, more than half a century before the Boeing 777X commercial jetliner.
