This really helped a lot to understand the experiment.
Working together for something better for both groups dissipates prejudice. A conclusion worth considering.

I knew Muzafer Sherif personally in the later years of his life. He explained these concepts to me, and I have utilized his methods in successfully navigating and resolving group conflict. The world is currently at a precipice where these concepts, specifically, Superordinate Goals, may apply and literally avert WW3/nuclear annihilation. Anyone out there make this connection? This may be Muzafer's gift to humanity.

Surprisingly, I'd not heard of this before, though I had read Golding's Lord of the Flies. (Was this experiment the inspiration for his classic book?) Fascinating. Thank you.

I would love to see this experiment replicated today with either girls or co-ed and see if they get the same or different results.
Each one would want to be queen over all the others, and also feel she's the most popular and prettiest one. Having grown up with two sisters, that's my guess anyways.
It was. And televised. Was called Kid Nation; was a reality show on NBC 20 yrs ago or so. Theres a podcast called SplitScreen: KidNation that will really hit home the similarities.

YES!!! Thus the reason it is the most replayed part of the video. My brain couldn't process the words over the noise.
And so NBC made this a reality show called Kid Nation in early 2000's. Its both terrifying & mesmerizing.

wasn't this hypothesized in "Lord of the Flies"? which was first copyrighted in 1954? it is man's nature to dominate else why or how could the species have survived?

Here's the experiment the universe has for the entire human kind: work together to avoid Climate change catastrophe.

And by work together do you mean being skeptical of companies that use old methods of energy production and relying (while ignorant) yourself on those same methods, but being completely blindly faithful in energy corporations who say they are fighting climate change and giving them endless funds paid by increased taxes. Furthermore there's a jingoistic mentality on the neoliberal left in the us, which somehow thinks the US should fix this problem while ignoring China being the main contributor to anthropogenic global climate change. Finally, partisan politics have become exactly the point this video, tribalism where one side sees themselves as good and the other as bad... Since a majority of Hollywood, corporate media, Wall Street, and silicon valley are currently invested in the Democratic party, the people elected for that party same intent on representing the other as deplorable which of course is not the start for a workable cooperative effort, not to mention quite jingoistic considering there are many other countries in the world.

It's possible the goal of this experiment has been misunderstood. It wasn't a failure in social engineering. Just look around you.

What a load of BS! It has been proven that the test results were rigged to confirm Sharif's theory and that the initial first experiment which is not mentioned here took place the previous year with a different group of boys. It not only disproved Sharifs theory but clearly demonstrated the boys natural inclination towards fairness and cooperation. Angered by the result he went on to construct another experiment a year later where the methods used and the rules applied were clearly designed to achieve the results he needed to support his premise and theory. Like scientists prodding rats in a maze for a desired outcome, rather than just observing the rats for a pure result.Someone needs to make a documentary about this appalling episode in human psychological experimentation.
More of direction (controlled variables) than research (independent variables), but valid in some understandings too. To control persons means to identify patterns that could create shared hostile psychological states. Now we better know what it takes to trigger.
There is also the factor of homogeneity. Everybody the same sets things up differently. I believe that if the groups had diversity, the research would've turned out different. It still ain't too applicable to real life, however, as even the kids know they will get to go home later.
Thanks for pointing this out, I will look into this. Sounds like what the pharmaceuticals do in regards to the safety and efficacy testing of most of their products, particularly vaccines. Not hard to believe this occurs. This is why independent studies are needed to test for repetitive results.

I'm always interested in this kind of reports, because in early psychology the results are oftentimes "too clear" and too good to be true. Also e.g. with the Hawthorne Study in Chicago.

You can look at other subsequent articles which tested his theory and it works. There are also meta-analyses with treated controls and large sample sizes! Stop spewing bullshit!

unfortunately he also pushed the boys towards this behaviour and only chose the run of the study where his hypthesis got confirmed. that is not up to todays scientific standards
