    When people say artists shouldn't use references, it's like saying a cook shouldn't use a recipe. It's nonsensical. You need to know the physical makeup of something to ever get to the point where you CAN draw it from imagination.

    I think most artist suffer from the ''draw from imagination'' complex. I was a victim of that aswell lol, I only realized my mistake like 4 months ago, and I drastically got better at drawing, better than my 2 years of trying to draw from imagination. Alot of artists suffer from self depreciation problem, and telling themselves that they're no good at all then start to give up. I think the toughest stage in art isn't drawing, it's acknowledging that you will eventually get better. And I'm glad I got out the drawing from imagination delusion off my head. Your video is really inspiring.

    • @gtrrohit5078
      @gtrrohit5078 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      art is not learned through talent, that's true because most artists of today started from a young age....and obviously you learn so much more back then. But let's say you do have talent, it does still take hard work to reach the highest level of art. even with talent.

    • @LemonSBugz
      @LemonSBugz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      "Talented" people just know what to focuss about drawing and know how to makes perfect practice. If you look at those "talented" people, you'll know they've been through a lot.
      Even you are the same age as them, but you may practice blindly, while the "talented" people figure it out what to focuss first and what to do later. Given the same amount of time, their result would be better than someone who doesn't know how to practice in time.
      Also you can ask them for help improving your art because they figured the way to make perfect practice. Just don't be jealous of those so-called "talented" people. They are people who've been through a lot of shit.

    • @yuuxing8761
      @yuuxing8761 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i dont think talent is a thing, no one is born being a master at something, it is learnt through time and hard work. just saying someone has talent is disregarding the countless hours that someone put into their art and saying as if they were just born with this skill. its offensive to many artists imo to call them talented, even if it is said with a positive motive. even if you see an artist at 10 or 11 that is as good as someone who is in their 20s, that doesnt mean the child was born with this ability, it was most likely because they were exposed to art when they were little, children learn a lot faster than adults

    My aversion to copying and using references started because of a classmate I had in elementary school. She used to trace stuff from anime episodes and google images and what not and pass it off as her own drawings so teachers and other classmates would praise her. Everytime I tried to tell people that the drawings were traced and I knew where she'd gotten them from I got dismissed as "jealous" and "attention-seeking". I hated that so much that I started avoiding using references and copying because I wanted to show that I was better than her. Luckily now I'm not as insecure about that and I've gotten rid of that mentality almost completely.

But now I’m gonna dedicate a full week to mastering FORM. All my drawings lack form and I swear to God I’m gonna master it if it’s the last thing I do. Thank you Kuzomari sir 🙏

    As i a kid i was also quite stupid, as i mentally demeaned myself, and came up with delusional logic. My memory was borderline non existent, and i had trouble remembering simple things like names. It wasnt until december 2019, that i felt like i was mentally free, also from drawing. Then i got into some science, fell into more mental rabbit holes, but that was all part of the fun. Here i am now, i still have a bad memory, but i feel a lot more intelligent and confident. The idea of generalizations, building a foundation, etc., helped me realize i was capable of more than i thought. Thanks for sharing your story Kuzo, it was very relatable and wholesome.

    I still keep using references for poses for 10 years almost, and Im still confused on how you actually practice, where do I begin? And where do I look to learn? Everything I just don't get it, when I think about it, or just try something all of my motivation just goes away, I just give up completely and I'll just stick with referencing poses the next day.

      What I like to do (first) is work on what you can TELL is wrong with your drawings because some things aren’t as easy to pick out of your art. Focus on those things for a while and once you feel ready start looking at art from professionals, it really helps to stare at understand how tense or relaxed (etc) the body can be. Then you can start with anatomy practice, at least that’s how I like doing things. This is just my practice you don’t have to follow and hell, maybe my style of practicing isn’t good

  • @inunekoal23
    @inunekoal23 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can REALLY relate to this!! For years I never used references only my own mind to memorised things but I never really improved. Once I was 14 I started using references and of course my art really improved, I'd say I was almost good then but I wasn't because all it taught me to do was copy. I spent years afterwards sucking because I never realized that I needed to actually learn the fundamentals of art as that's what everything is based on. This year I really want to make a manga series, have the story worked out and everything I just know i need to really learn perspective and anatomy rn it feels like an impossible task but Im gonna do everything I can to reach it.

    My biggest regret is being a perfectionist. Everytime I tell myself I should draw/doodle something, anything, I start but stop because I feel it isnt perfect. I felt that whatever I made wasnt perfect and I would either delete or stop it
    Im starting to learn to embrace imperfection but sometimes I accidentally go back to my old ways. I dont draw as much as I should, still. But I think Im slowly getting there

      I know you should preach the advice you give but i'll be honest I have had trouble with this myself no matter how well i know it's true (as someone with crippling perfectionism and adhd). Still this advice might serve you. The biggest thing about perfectionism is to lower not only your standards but break down your goals to really simply ones. Instead of looking at the end goal or big picture which we tend to do (like some sick piece that is far beyond our skills), try to break down the things you think you should learn and then break those down even further. Set mini goals that you can achieve within 1 to 2 week periods so you can see tangible growth that starts to feed you a positive feedback loop and timeline of building blocks. Also balance fun with fundamentals, I know I failed plenty a time trying to grind fundies as a primary goal before ever allowing myself to do anything for fun, which is a huge mistake

    • @Cinskix
      @Cinskix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You gotta make lots of bad drawings to be able to make a good one, there's no other way around. . Are you drawing with the intention to post it and show it off to anyone? If not , then all you have to do is to accept your current skill level and keep working on improving it. being a perfectionist is actually a good trait to have for an artist. You have to just learn to accept your mistakes and work on improving them within a longer period of time. Its wrong attitude if you want to have everything perfect in this exact moment because that's simply impossible. Why don't you try to just keep practice for 1-2 months without judging your artwork at all, and then compare your new arts with the ones from month before. I'm sure you'll see some difference. And thats the thing that should motivate you to keep drawing, it's about growing as an artist and learning new things and learning how to get better, not just about being able to create perfect drawings everytime

      Hey man, I've been drawing pretty much every single day for the past year and a half. I definitely have days of art block but the best way to get over it is to draw. Even if its for 5 minutes of simply copying an artist you like or breaking down anatomy of a character of an artist you like. You may not feel like doing it but after 5 minutes you could have reignited the spark because of finding a pleasing result. If not, well guess what, you can claim you have draw that day and try again tomorrow. I believe everyone has a subjective mindset to their art but I also believe that through willpower and desire to be a greater artist anyone can overcome the block. Most of the time it's your ego holding you back because you either are disappointed with your skill level as of late or you feel pressured by yourself to be better and fear failing. Tos the fear out the window. Fail fast and fail hard. Embrace and anylise your mistakes, and learn from em. 👌

I just drawing what i like just like i child.Ya after two years in art school i think you must know the basic about drawing like shadow, pose ,and other. Art isn't hard to study but first you must know what your art style it make you more enjoying and don't compere your drawing to other artists drawing and feel bad about your drawing.

    I just picked up drawing a month ago and I'm on the perspective phase of learning right now after trying out a yikesish portrait. A week of drawing wire frame mannequins produces some interesting results and I've found improvement in the shoulders and upper torso. I feel like if I try a portrait again, it'll be less yikes now. (Lower torso and hips is still a dumpster fire, but maybe i'll get to that after another week.) Of all the "tutorials" I've watched, I think the best I've come across are your anatomy practice sketches.

    I seriously went through the same thing. I always messed around in art class but our teacher never really taught us anything. He taught us basic shading techniques and touched on perspective a little but it never made sense or clicked. We never did exercises in these activities to learn them. I don't blame my art teacher for everything though, I also blame myself for not actually trying to understand how to truly draw. I would just mess around and say hey I'm gonna try manga too and had those "How to draw manga books" too. I seriously cringe at myself looking back on those times.
    Once I left High school is when I took art more seriously. I then went on a path of self discovery. I think Andrew Loomis books were a step in the right direction for me and I thank you for sharing your story.Your story helps me on my path of learning art too. I realize now that I have to truly try my best to understand art to become better. I hate that I was too blinded by my own pride in my work. I hope to continue learning art and truly become an artist.

    I have this weird battle in my head where I feel frustrated and complain a lot and put off my pieces when it's not going right, but I get even more angry if I am not drawing which brings me back at it. It's like telling myself "What do you mean I can't do it I'll show you". I am my own toxic person. Essentially I get it done, but in a longer span of time due to this dilemma, it's like I have to wait for a certain day where it randomly clicks..
