We’re about two-thirds of the way through our 21-day tour of Southeast Asia and so far we’ve experienced the beautiful city of Singapore, the world’s oldest Chinatown in Manila, the tribal lagoons of Coron, and the resort-heavy island of Boracay. Today, we’re packing up and heading southeast to experience the natural wonders of Bohol-and to find out why this destination is one of the most popular in the Philippines. But once again, getting there means first flying back up to Manila and then catching the connecting flight back down.
Unlike the tiny island of Boracay that we just left, Bohol is on the bigger side-it’s the 10th largest in the Philippines. It’s actually one big island and 75 minor surrounding islands. We flew into and staying on one of those minor islands-Panglao-just off the southwestern tip of the main island. In fact, it’s so close that you can drive to it using either of two bridges that span the causeway.
The most popular attraction in Bohol is Chocolate Hills: 1,776 limestone hills stretched over 50 square kilometers of the island. They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name. Formed by tectonic shifts that pushed them upwards and then smoothed into conical hills by water erosion. These iconic hills are even featured in the 200 Philippine Peso bill.

I am a Study Abroad advisor at a large Midwestern university. Let me tell you, my students whose parents exposed them to overseas travel when they were young are the ones I enjoyed working with the most. They are inquisitive, open-minded and eager to explore and meet the locals at their study abroad destinations. They prefer to hang out with local students. Differences don’t faze them. They understand the platinum rule of cultural engagement - treat others as THEY would like to be treated. If many of our young people travel with parents who encourage them to accept and explore cultural diversity, there is hope for this world. Hopefully, I will witness this in my lifetime. Before visting other countries, make sure you visited our tourist spots first.
I know what you mean. I have lived longer in the US than I have when I was a young lad growing up in the PHL. I feel a sense of nostalgia and an enormous desire to visit these places you guys have been to!
As a tourist, Cebu is a better alternative as a jump-off point to the islands (as it's located centrally) and having the 2nd biggest airport in the Philippines. Plus, the islands in and around Cebu are just amazing (Bohol included). Glad that you are enjoying the Philippines!

@@AlwaysBeChanging I don't know if you're still in the country, but maybe for next time. Try Halo-halo, it's a nice dessert. Literally means mix-mix and it's a mixture of ingredients in the same vein as mixture of cultures from around the world. It's got a mix of tropical beans, ingredients, purple yam ice cream, purple yam, leche flan, coconut. Also try lechon, it's suckling pig. Usually, it's like those Hawaiian pigs where you roast it on a fire, but there are restaurants that you can go for where they give 1 person servings. Cebu is known for spicy lechon.

I would love to have my kids experience that…I grew up in the Philippines and moved to the US when I was 15. The hustle and bustle of living life in the US deprives you of appreciating what’s around you, let alone exploring the beauty of the world.
It’s ironic too, many Filipinos move out of the Philippines into other countries for a better life, work their butts off, just so they can afford to come back to the Philippines.
I wish to show my kids where I grew up, show their roots, and show them the beauty of the Philippines.

Edit: And Cebu is literally just opposite Bohol. Tourists usually do Cebu & Bohol together - several days in Cebu then a day trip in Bohol.
We had a great experience in Cebu but didn't have enough time to do everything we hoped. Cebu episode on the way and then we hope to be back in February for more!

Oh Pandan is a type of a young bamboo plant called screwpine in English- it’s mostly harvested for its leaves which is green and produces a sweet vanilla with a hint of coconut taste used for extract for baking mostly South East Asian sweets-mainly in Philippines

This is what we’d like to experience, too. We really try to get away from the tourist areas but it’s harder to do on shorter visits in each city because we barely get to meet locals. Now that we have a bigger PH audience, we can ask in advance. That said, our upcoming episode was with a nice local who took us away from the tourist areas and showed us his favorite street foods.
