salt on ice does interesting things. it lowers the freezing temperature of water. you'd think it would get warmer when ice melts to water, but it actually gets colder. the opposite is true too, when water freezes it actually releases more heat. this is why when people do that trick with a super cold bottle of water, hit it on something and it instantly turns to ice, but it's actually just slush not solid because it releases so much extra heat, the temperature rises and it can't freeze solid.
