I only discovered NIN a matter of months ago and had never paid any attention to them until now. The Downward Spiral was the first album of theirs that I bought - it seems strange to me now to think that it was actually released all those years ago. I guess that's the true definition of a timeless record... Trent is a genius - and I'm loving working my way through NIN's back catalogue. I have alot of catching up to do!
Trent actually does explain MOTP on the 'Disturbed' Interview disc. "Can you tell me who the Pigs are?" "I don't know what particular song your talking about but for example in March of The Pigs I'm referring mainly to...the media to people who I thought were friends around me. The issue I was addressing I think was the feeling we got when, in America when we attain a certain level of success, its surprising to see all the legions of people that start fucking with you."
It's amazing seeing his interviews from back then because of how nervous, uneasy and reserved he looked, avoiding eye contact and constantly twitching his legs. Now in more recent interviews you can see just how much more confident and straightforward he's become while maturing, yet not losing his respect towards his interviewer nor his way with words. Trent is a class-act.
he's kind of a rare figure from the 90s alternative scene (along with maynard from tool) that didn't turn into a parody of himself or got exposed as an abuser
"...music as fashion thing I try and stay away from..." and ended up becoming the centrepiece of a whole genre. That genre which I will avoid naming/ stereotyping. Nevertheless that whole isolation/addiction/mental deterioration (even if one had never gone that far)Trent Reznor still spoke for a large segment of the population then and now. It was an album that needed to be done. The Downward Spiral is one of the most significant albums of the era musically and conceptually. Color me pretentious if you like but this fan was tickled pink.
There's a true strory behind that house Trent lived in when he recorded down word spiral. And because of that place, after and few albums a few years later, is responsible in Trents change of life. But is some scary ass shit. Besides that, NIN will always be one of my all time favorite bands.
"The volume is a little low so turn up the speakers." That's something that could have been corrected / adjusted at sound check. Production is SUPPOSED to run checks on all technicals, including the VU meter : ) **there are videos with worse sound than this.
Even though this is one of Trent’s best albums, I’m pretty sure to this day Trent must not like talking about this album since it represents a harsh time in his life. Probably an album he doesn’t want to look back since he’s in a better place now
@SteABW lol indeed you do my friend ^.^ Annoyingly NIN is done for now while he is working on what ever else he is working on. Compared to most "alt/rock/indus" out there today his music lives on and is still strong to this day like you pointed out with the Spiral. Its sad to think how few ppl there out there today like trent :(
Wonder if anyone this comment section has ears. He didn't say he didn't know he bought the murder house lol He even says he named the studio Le Pig in poor taste. He just said that the songs on DWS aren't referencing those murders, which no one would believe at this point. lol He kind of addressed your comments already
If in case anyone is wondering, about the song MARCH OF THE PIGS, that house was fucking haunted. And MARCH OF THE PIGS, notice how nervous Trent was on camera, because MARCH OF THE PIGS, was about when he came home one day and found the word PIG written in blood on his door. And he couldn't figure out how it got there. And it scared the shit out of him for so many years. That place was the reason he did drugs and a few other things he'd never thought he'd do. It's so fucking weird to me as a fan because I used to think it really is who he was back then. Turned it out wasn't, and because of that place. He still seems a stranger with the old self now.
+IN THE VEIN Tuitau No, the Tate house didn't make Trent fucked up. He got really fucked In The Fragile era. And It Isn't about how he was uncomfortable with being there. The song Is about Society, simple as that. Piggy Is about the character's Girlfriend leaving him. He took the door with him as well, Hell he might still have It. So no, the reason he did drugs was because of his Grandmother's passing. He was having a Downward Spiral himself.
PIG was written on that door in Sharon Tate's blood back in 69. That's what he was referring to when he admits making the bad decision to name his label PIG.
We wouldn't be satisfied with the answer. It's kind of like when a magician shows you a really cool magic trick and then shows you how he did it; you think to yourself "oh wow...that's so simple" it ruins it a bit. The truth is probably something to do with a girl, mixed with the fact that he grew up very lonely.
Does anyone know a band that kind of sounds like trent singing? not looking for an emulation and void my wordage of singing, just a whole package of similar sounds?
tool kind of, they're definitely more hype though. aenima and 10,000 days. hail to the thief by radiohead has some similar sounds, although the vocals are very different.

As it turns out, you're probably fucked up in the head if you fantasize about living inside of a murder scene.

I do think he used sharon tate house where the murders took place as a way to gain popularity and to sell more music.he was being insenstive and ect.
Nah
I think that could have been an accidental consequence. Or maybe it was in the back of his mind. At least he regretted it.
Agreed. good thing he came to his senses
wtf is the interviewer wearing?
He's joking, because of Trent talking about the song "March of the Pigs"

WHAT??
Sacrifice five Orbbs to the mighty Vadrigar, and chant HUMILIATION five times.
So many lies to sell. I wish the same questions could be asked today after he is a made man and see the results.
Just curious what you mean by this? You don’t think he was being genuine?
Boo hoo.
