  • Voice coils are relatively simple structures, but have the power to make your speakers and hard drives work! How do they do this?

      Sorry bro, I just realised I got triggered. I'm an audio guy and that shitty overlayed unprocessed drum loop temporarily drove me to insanity. Visceral cringe. I'm still haunted by the snare D': God it's so bad, just add a little parallel compression and some EQ, Pls Linus, get gud.
      To you it's a cute joke, to me it's like seeing a section of footage that was shot on an iphone 2 vertically. So triggered, I'm going to take a bath in bleach and listen to Massive Attack for 16 hours to overcome the trauma.

    Some years ago, auto manufacturers were experimenting with coil operated valves (intake and exhaust) in lieu of a camshaft, rockers, valve springs, etc. The problem was that they were incredibly noisy.

    Linus you forgot to mention that there is another type of speakers out there too. Just like microphones there is one type with electric coils and a permanent magnet and the other type is condenser microphones or in speakers you have the electrostatic speaker. And that electrostatic speaker membrane can move even faster than the coil, and since it has less mass than a coil with membrane attached, it can stop faster too. Thus it has greater frequency response over traditional voice coils.
    But I have not seen that technique used in computer hard drives though...

    The lawrence effect is cause by a physics principle: when electricity flows in a wire, a magnetic field that swirls around the wire is created. The math explaning it is too complex and involves vectorial algebra and field calulus but here is a thumbrule. Litrerally: get your right hand and make a thumbs up sign. The thumb ponts to the electric flow direction and the fingers go in the direction and curving that the magnetic field does.

  • @DeadlyVoltsHD
    @DeadlyVoltsHD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey linus, you forgot that voice coils can also produce electricity and that the amplifier has to overcome that power generated, put any copper coil in a magnet and move it and it will generate electricity

    Techquickie team, I want to start by saying that I am enamored of the channel. I am late to the game (I have only been exposed to the channel for about a month or 2) but I have already "back-watched" dozens - maybe even hundred - of your videos, and quite frankly, I can't get enough. I know with such a high throughput of content and such a strong watcher/subscriber base, there must be a seemingly infinite queue of exciting, new content awaiting our eager eyes & ears, but I still have the urge to share some of my ideas. So my question is (its about time right. lol): what can we the viewers do to contribute topics in a structured and formal way not to clutter the comments section? Should we do this over on the "Linus tech tips" forum or is there a medium specifically for "Techquickie" that I missed?

    • @TravisClarke87
      @TravisClarke87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Caution: I am a software engineer, so most of my suggestions will be a bit biased to the software end of the spectrum, but one topic in particular that comes to mind is containerization - not Docker per se, but rather a broad coverage of the kernel features, like namespaces and cgroups, under the hood that make it possible. And maybe even some of its benefits over the traditional VM. This would complement the great piece you guys did on virtual machines...and let's be honest, it's one the the few topics that comes to mind that y'all haven't already covered.

      It is in fact the controller for his teleprompter, he's talked about it before I think. Everytime he goes to handle it, it's because he's reaching the end of what the current slide on the teleprompter says, and moves it ahead so they don't HAVE to constantly cut if they don't want, he can just keep going.

    A Brushless Motor works kinda simelar. Inside is a Electronic Magnet and around the coils are magnets. A Brushless Controller Controlles the pulses of courrent that gets into the Coil and the Motor starts spinning. But don't take my worde thats only how i understand it.
