I am puzzled and frustrated that three tab has a shorter life. On this house, it would look much better than the architectural shingles, which are similar materials but alternate between two layers and one for effect. But that means the single layer part should be failing just as soon as the three tabs which are all single layer. So if the three tab fail earlier, that means lower quality material. Why don't they make high quality material three tab?
The sun destroys the asphalt when it is not "in the shade" of the granules. So, once you see the shiny black base, you will soon see the cracking of the base as the sun dries it out. Granule loss also means that the tar base is getting dried out and can no longer act as an adhesive for the granules.
