    Hi everyone! Thanks for the amazing response from this awesome attempt with the DISCO. As you know it is gone but I am going to try to get another one and put a GPS tracker on it recommended by some of you here. Some of you have also wanted to contribute to a new DISCO #2 so I can continue to fly these types of missions, push the limits of the DISCO and post them here on my channel. If you'd like to donate to the "Dustin's New DISCO with GPS Tracker" fund..lol you can PayPal me any amount you want here: atozpc.dustin@gmail.com and I will use it to purchase a new DISCO, equip it with a GPS tracker and also ATTEMPT TO OUTFIT SOLAR PANELS ON TOP OF THE WINGS FOR ADDED FLIGHT TIME AND RANGE! I think that would be an awesome experiment and will do it if enough funds are raised to get the equipment necessary. Aloha and thank you all for your support on these crazy mission attempts 😀👍

    Hi Dustin, I think you need to get to that island and take a look around cos I think you have a fair chance of finding it. Just think of the learning curve everyone would have if you got hold of that footage. Got to be worth the effort. Could even take the manic with you to save you the leg work. It is another mission and video as well. Can me on get over there, you just never know.

    And now for the ghost story:
    "One year to the day since the Disco disappeared, at 2:05 AM, Dustin wakes in the dark to the sound of electronic beeping. Squinting, he scans the room for the source, then stops at the transmitter case in the corner. The sound is unmistakable: Sky Controller has powered on by itself. Dustin tiredly stumbles over to press the off button - then feels his blood freeze as he realizes that the lost Disco has made contact. Instinctively he glances at the FatShark goggles. 'It wants to show me something I may not want to see.' Trembling, he slowly reaches for the goggles, torn between a longing to reconnect with The Craft, and stark terror at the thought of FPV from beyond the grave."

      Dustin Dunnill Power-Density from solar, doesn't match the power-consumption-rate, so would actually shorten flightimes, like adding a 5.2Ah doesn't surpass flighttimes using a 4Ah.
      If solar could match glide power-rates, a very small & light 500mah battery Parralleled to a supercapacitor(for short bursts of power), then sustained with solar, could fly the Disco all noonday long(9am-3pm).

      I’ve lost connection with mine a couple times but it just turns back around and comes straight back and even with winds it flies sideways back to me. I’ve also lost connection with it at max height and it was a bit scary cause it wouldn’t come down until it went into that automatic landing mode than I regained control and took it out of landing. So it’s pretty safe if you don’t loose connection too far away.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stijn De Winter Today I looked at some high res pictometry imagery at work which has some measurement tools for hight etc. The point peak where I was trying to fly over measured around 390 feet. Since I put the 455 ft waypoint after the peak, and it seemed the actual Disco was possibly 25 feet under the designated alt throughout the flight, it's most likely it smacked into that sheer cliff Pinnacle which probably ended the flight even prior to the low alt water issue. I should have checked that pictometry before I did this. Definitely adding this process to the pre flight planning from here on out 👍

    Dustin, I sincerely hope that Parrot gives you another Disco. it is because your videos that I am purchasing a Disco next week. You do great work, and I hope that you you continue to mod the Disco and push for longer flights with it. I've seen some people set up LTE with the help of a rasberry. I am very interesting in getting into long flights with the Disco, so Parrot - if your reading the comments - PLEASE give Dustin a few more Discos and have some of your engineers give him a call so you guys can brainstorm a 50 mile autonomous flight. New goal for you Dustin. 50 miles bro! I'm thinking LTE setup, GPS tracker, and some sort of dual or triple battery rig modification. I know that's a lot more weight, but c'mon there has to be something that can be done to get this thing up to 50 miles. C'mon Parrot - the TH-cam marketing benefits will be insane. I can bet 1-2 million views is attainable.

    Hi Dustin. I enjoy your videos. I do a lot of way-point flying with my Bebop drone. Much shorter loops of course. I love the excitement of waiting for it to return(or not). I've lost it on 3 occasions. Reasons: 1) Low battery (twice). I just flew it to close to battery depletion and it didn't make it back. 2} Too Low. I programmed it for 20 feet above an orchard's tree tops and it flew into the trees instead.
    The red flag to me in your program was the 16 feet altitude over the ocean. My experience is that Parrot products don't control their altitude to that precision. After my orchard crash I always test the programs at a higher altitude, then use the drones video to gradually lower the altitude on subsequent flights.
    I congratulate you on your nerve to try this flight. If you're afraid to use a piece of equipment it's not worth having.
    David

  • @rebelforgod
    @rebelforgod 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Alelekiki Peak, you designated the altitude AFTER passing over the peak, so I suspect the Disco smacked the peak BEFORE reaching the designated altitude.
    Ohh, and skimming the waves. I've had 35ft altitude variance, so don't trust low flights.
    I agree that the 4Ah is the most efficient (90-110 minutes) for a wing of this size.
    The 5.2Ah requires more thrust, so little flight time is gained, with much glide time lost.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. I'm thinking you are right. 2 major route mistakes were passing over the point at Kahoolawe and going to low coming back. Lessons learned.

  • @nightwaves3203
    @nightwaves3203 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Have your clearance above terrain before reaching it. Haleakala is a tall mountain where winds aloft have to change to go around and over it. Classically that southern side you can see the lines of where the wind shear is hitting the water. Wasn't sure if it was cloud shadows or the water disturbance from the wind shear when you were almost to Bikini. My control cables slapped loudly with a bang against the inside of the wings and head tapped the roof of the plane from that sheer line I could see ahead. Since you have extra batteries try a flight surveying from altitude to see if the shear lines hitting the water are visible. Then if you don't see and color and surface changes in a line form try a bit higher altitude. It can be calm winds below but up on the mountain faster winds wrapping around bend down causing the shear lines from both sides angling in towards the downwind side like the old bombing range you were going to. Have fun.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NightWaves Thanks for the advice. I think the DISCO is being ground into sand from hitting that point and tumbling into that small bay due to my after peak waypoint error as we speak 🤙

  • @josesalavisa8751
    @josesalavisa8751 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    HI,
    You lost the disco because it doesn´t have rudder and so it can´t correct the force of the wind when you put one waypoint on the map in the flight plan, the disco try to overfligh the point, but due to the wind it describe turns untill to over flight the point, or it can happens that with just one turn the disco overfligh the point, but it can happens that it turns and turns without the capacity to correct the wind and the final is it turns untill the end of the batery and it lands by itself.
    So, remember, in a flight plan, reduce to the minimum the waypoints. I thing this is a bad program of control of the disco.
    You should report your case to Parrot.
    Have good flights

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may be right jose. I had done it before with success in a different area and the confidence I had in that flight did me in here with some possible bad waypoint choices on my part.

      Yeah? Tell me about that
      Ublox M8N GPS = 20$
      FPV Camera = 30$ / 70$ for HD records
      Frsky receiver = 15$
      Flight controller = 20$ / 30$ for APM
      FPV Transmitter = 20$
      ESC = 10$
      Motor = 15$
      170$ for premium tech parts. I could get as low as 70$ if i choose budget parts.
      For that price I could sent out a whole squad of flying wings on the same mission.

    There’s some really strong winds that wrap around the eastern side of Maui and can create some serious turbulence down low just to the east of Makena. If the winds are strong enough on that particular day it will be able to create turbulence all the way out by Kahoolawe.

    I wonder if you had your telephone number on it? The Disco is mostly foam, so I imagine it would float pretty well. Provided it went down at sea, perhaps it will wash ashore on one of the islands or back on Maui. With Litchi Mission Planner online, I'm always tempted to do some kind of long distance flight like this with my P3A, but it doesn't have the range of the Disco. If you don't recover it, hope that perhaps Parrot can sell you a 'bare bones' version, though, it is so heavily discounted at various sites now ($550 off at B&H Photo, NY from orig. price of $1299.00) Parrot might charge you close to the discounted price for a bare bones version (given that they are only discounting $400 off the original $1299 price at their store). Perhaps they'll cut you some slack, since you've done a lot of video advertising for them. Good luck .. Mahalo!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bill Somrak I have a feeling it crashed into that point on Kahoolawe. So it's either stuck on the hill there or in the water. I'm sure it floats. If anything, would be great to salvage the footage. The solid state memory could probably keep the vid safe even in the ocean. It's time to put a lost ad out with flight route and photos of how it looks. I'd say I've got a 1% chance of seeing it again 🍻

    A lot of folks here hating on the Disco. My impression having owned one for 6 months is that it is tremendous fun to fly and rather unique. Nothing else on the market gives the same experience. There are DJI drones with better range and cameras but the speed and battery life of the Disco gives me an out of body experience. You really get a feeling that you can explore a landscape at speed and in winds. It's not like flying a foamie either because it has all these flight smarts and protections. However it has flaws. The camera could be better and landing is really quite tricky if you don't have a field. I like to bring it down in long grass, bushes or crops where it stops immediately. That said it is far more robust than say a Mavic. As long as you don't hit a rock with the lens it is fine. I flew it into the ground at 60km/h and it was undamaged. Note to others, if geofence is turned off, there is no altitude protection either, you are allowed negative altitude.
    Biggest issue though is that I think Parrot won't continue this product line. As a drone it is basically illegal to fly it in most countries. It will easily go beyond 2km and as high as you dare, but in nearly all jurisdictions you are limited to line of sight and 120m. Autonomous flight is illegal nearly everywhere. Parrot will likely continue to sell it as a land survey and agricultural drone, but I can't see it being a successful mass consumer product in the long term.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Philip O'Carroll For some reason I have this weird feeling the DISCO 2 will be a VTOL to remedy the landing issues and they'll make great improvement to the camera. Here's to hoping they can pull something like that off and still have the flight time 🍻

    Great attempt buddy. This kind of thing is why I would buy one of these. I would suggest getting your altitude data from Hawaii state map sources instead of Google. Also, the GPS Lon/Lat data given on Google has a margin of error that I would suspect when added to the Parrot's error margin might have had you too close to the island. I would bet its actually on the island? Better luck next time. Good work..

    Would like to point out a potentially unknown "feature" or behavior that you may not have been aware of during Disco Flight Plans.
    If you have any significant change in altitude planned, the drone WILL CIRCLE between waypoints to decrease/increase altitude if it cannot make the change during linear flight without aggressive vertical movement. This means you should have a horizontal clearance of at least 120 feet on all sides of your planned course, AT ALL TIMES. If a gust of wind changes your flight speed or heading, it is very common for Disco to circle to regain its heading or altitude.
    Just thought you would all like to know. Cheers!

    Sorry for your loss Dustin, hopefully Parrot will see the exposure your reviews give their products and come to the party!
    One concern that I would like to mention with the 16 foot way-points is the safety aspect. Given the altitude discrepancies you mention, it doesn't seam that the only danger is the disco going for a swim at that point in the mission. Could there have been sailing boats or other vessels in your flight path?, as those way-points seamed close to Shaw! It would give new meaning to disco dancing out at sea, but not in a fun way :-)
    Anyway, keep up the great reviews!

      You are correct. It was a short run of too low of an altitude and I should have changed it to something safer. I've had it low to 50 ft before but with the possible discrepancy it was a bad idea :)

      Yes, I think we have all done things that we look back and think, that wasn't such a great idea! I know I have a pretty long list :-(

    Wow that's tough man I know people will be thinking first the mavic then this but like u said it's the risk you take when testing and reviewing products like this but they are always replaceable and is minimal loss. Great review and I look forward to the next video and it's a thumbs up from me

    I can't believe how calm you are....! I would have been wreeked..Sry. Dustin. Maybe, It will turn up. Btw, there isn't any failsafe, on board that will track it beyond the Wifi range of the sky Controller?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. If it's out of controller range there is no hope in tracking. I'll put a GPS tracker on the new disco i'm trying to fund which will work for a few days with an app on your phone to locate :)

    Have you seen Demunseed fly one of these? They are so stable, that after a collision, it managed to still fly and land.

    Hello, and great video. Sorry that you lost this obviously great flier, but I have a question. Sorry I'm not too knowledgeable about the current on board systems in the DISCO, but after watching your video, a thought occurred to me. So the controller, and the plane, synced with the software in the program on the Ipad.....Is there on board memory and GPS functions on the DISCO plane that "stand alone"? Or is the information to the plane being transmitted by the Ipad and controller? My thought is, maybe, when you lost signal to the DISCO, then the flight plan was lost as well as picture and flight controls. Does the DISCO have on board memory to be able to store the flight plan? Just a thought. Again, great videos!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Weaver It's an onboard computer with GPS. When you program an auto mission it will fly the program autonomously and also auto return and circle launch point if your flying just manually and it loses connection with controller.

    I just had TH-cam on autoplay and this popped up and I heard flying from Wailea and Molokini and switched to the TH-cam tab because I have a condo in Kihei and know Wailea well and have been out to Molokini several times and that peaked my interest. So I started watching and hadn't read the title but hearing you talk of your plan to fly over to Kahoolawe with a Parrot product and was like nah, this guy is crazy. I haven't really ever used a Parrot product, I see them at Best Buy, I assumed they were kind of a high quality toy. It was really cool seeing how you can program in a route to follow though and the really long flight time (I may buy one of these down the road) but still seemed sketchy as all frig. I have a big 600mm quad that will fly for about 90mins on a battery that would be fun to try something like this, but I built it and its got no fancy GPS flight path thing, its 1.3GHz fpv video (Carries a GoPro as well) and a CrossFire diversity receiver with the 2W transmitter for my JR bay on my Taranis. I like the idea of the programmed flight path, which is why this video has me seriously considering buying one of these, but man I like to see the video coming back and have control over the thing the whole time. Next time I am going to be out there at the condo I should PM you and see if you would be interested in coming along and flying mine out there and back. Only thing is I spent a fair bit of time out there in 2017, and this year is pretty busy and don't really know the next time I will be out to Maui unfortunately. I don't get out to the condo as much as I would like anymore, wish I could live there really, I love Maui, its a beautiful island. Sorry you lost your drone though, subscribing to the channel, looks like some quality content.

      +KlockworXMusic Hey man. Sounds like you've built yourself a hulk of a drone. 90 minutes on a multirotor is amazing flight time. I'd love to try a manual flight to see how far it would get. As long as it has auto RTH on connection loss there shouldn't be anything to worry about. If you'd like to see some successful auto missions with the DISCO I do have a few up on my channel. One to and circling Molokini and another from twin falls to Keanae North shore (sketchy wind but it made it). Let me know next time your here and I'd love to connect with you dustindunnill@gmail.com

    Hey it was a pleasure watching all of your videos, I may have to say you lost her at that low altitude of 16 ft as that boat pass by the old Hawaiian fisherman having a flashback, and took it out! But most importantly for fixed-wing have you battery lightweight that's some decent range to cover and high-quality photography
