- The arrival of the CD in 1981 changed the music world forever. In April 1981, when star conductor Herbert von Karajan launched the marketing of the "Compact Disc" together with representatives of the technology companies Philips and Sony, no one could have imagined what would follow. The CD became the dominant format for the distribution of music for years to come. More importantly, it ushered in the digital era, in which music could be copied without sacrificing quality.
This episode of History Stories is all about the rise and fall of the CD.

I now hear that CD's are making a comeback, because when you hear musics streaming from Spotify or other types of streaming app, they have a decision to remove it because they own the music. BUT, with vinyls, cassettes and CD's like I have, YOU own the music. Once you purchase it, it's yours to keep, just as long as you have a player to play musics with. This is why I would love to start up a collections of CD's I once had.
Thanks for watching and sharing your love vor CDs. There is certainly a sense of nostalgia associated with CDs and cassettes that we, too, appreciate.

I've always kept and still have my cd and vinyl collection as I like to own my music and always have it in my hands 🙂

I remember when my parent bought me the first CD in my life and i listen to it every night. It feels so nostalgic nowadays when I recall those time putting a cd into a disc tray and waiting it to read the disc
I used to have CDs. I still have the them, but I never use them. I kinda got used to vinyl and music streaming cause I feel like I can touch the music

As a zoomer who still has his Baby Einstein CD he got circa '07 😂 amd just ripped it to WAV to listen to it on my portables, I beg to differ. Granted, I'm not a teen anymore, but I desperately want to get a CD both me and my teenage sister like

CD's will never go away. They are possibly the best storage media. They're equivalent to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Facts, almost bought a new phone and at the last moment I realised it is without 3.5mm jack

To PlayStation, discs became a full replacement to tapes.
CD sales peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s but clearly saw a decline from 2005 to 2020. It has been making a slow recovery in recent times nevertheless.
I love CD, it's so underrated, especially now that vinyl has overtaken CD now. I don't have space in my room for a vinyl collection anyway.

Oh yeah, CDs are so underrated, huh? They've been around forever and yet people are just now appreciating them. Vinyl is trendy now, but let me tell you, CDs have always been the superior option for good sound and convenience.
But hey, if you don't have space for a vinyl collection, that's fair. CDs are more practical in that sense. They take up less space and are easier to store. So, keep loving those CDs, buddy! You're making the right choice.
I've been crushing it with cds for 40 years, and 5000 cds. Love the outtakes and alternate cuts and bonus materials you don't get with vinyl. And the price.

They already are coming back. Get them while they’re still mostly cheap.
Don't say "little discs" There were for a time, portable CD's of 3.1" ( 80mm - which held up to 24 minutes of music)
as compared to the 4.7" (120 mm) size.

In the case of CDs there is no FALL
It made people respect music. I remember buying Supreme by Robbie Williams. You had to listen to the whole thing because you bought it. Now you just have a hit and the artist is gone. And producing music gave people jobs. The process, because it was difficult, made the producers more selective.
You are right, now it's all about the 30 second sped up/slowed tik-tok
Dw, please do more research and get the history corrected. It was Philips that invent the compact disc CD. Philips learn from past history and open the cooperation, worked with Sony for four years, not the other way as u reported, to ensure the success of CD against other Telefunken format.
I still buy CDs and only CDs
Record companies assured the demise of vinyl by - for example- refusing returns from retailers on unsold LPs, thus ending a longstanding practice. Yes, consumers did prefer CDs, and I was one of those. This story makes me think about all the shopping malls that left our downtown retail dead. And look at the malls today!

This was a fine invention.
It was NOT Richard Edlinger's version of Beethoven's 9th symphony, but Herbert Van Karajan's version which calculated the original length of the Audio Compact disc (2:38)
The thing about physical media is that it's not gonna be overtaken by streaming for the simple fact that there are people who want the best quality music.
I buy CDs so I can rip FLACs, I buy DVDs and Blu-Rays to rip them, and I know that there are thousonds if not millions of people just like me who will go through that effort for better quality. Until we are all able to watch Deadpool at a consistent 24Mbs anywhere at any time like on the Blu-Ray: physical media will not die.
I never gave up my CD collection and players. They are all carefully stored until I build a new PC. Then I dedicate an entire SSD just for WAV, FLAC and ACC music files after ripping my old CDs. So far, I have nearly 1.2 Tb worth of music from my CD collection plus another 0.4 Tb of downloaded WAV and FLAC files.

Streaming and online platforms can go any day and overall their services are not yours to keep. Meanwhile, physical copies like CD, Cassette and vinyl records will guarantee you a lifetime of audio quality and it’s actually yours to keep.

Try to FIND the ABBA or specially made Springsteen CD's with the promo SONY white cardboard box they came in: up to $150 or so.
The Billy Joel "Stranger" CD was the first mass produced in the US, those a fraction of that.
The Blue Label RCA JAPAN CDs are more valuable , up to $20-30, not the 2nd run blue labeled CDs from the USA, half that or regular retail.
The ALL GOLD Mobile Fidelity CDs are just ridiculously overpriced IF you can find them at a resale store or online site.

Mine must've skipped the so called " protective coating"
the TOP of the CD with the writing is where scratches affect the playing of the CD. Very early on it was widely reported a hack:
covering the scratched affected area with clear toothpaste, smoothing it out, will alleviate the skipping for some time.
it's so weird how we used to use kompakt disks we actually owned yet now we use streaming services.
cds do be good for collectors. once inserted in your pc, it will automatically be saved in your computer or phone

...even though its *ALREADY invented* , it will not become a serious contender to vinyl records until the end of the 80s. Yes, it's a far superior format: Pristine sound quality, compact size, unmatched resistance to wear and tear, zero loss of quality in succesive copying generations, not bothered by dust etc....but *ours is the generation that PURPOSELY ignores technology for decades. That's what we do as a generation.* ah mean... *look what is happening with solar panels, already with us since the late 70s, but ignoring progress is our identity.* Wait till after a generation from the future invents giant superflat TVs that work digitally.... *they'll come up with a higher standard of high-definition visuals every few months* ....We'll just rot here watching knackered vhs tapes, 'cause we just love substandard quality. 🥴
