Great analysis of A Rose For Emily; you should also address the symbolism of the rose; I think we can’t really say she refuses to acknowledge Homer’s death, as she poisoned him, she just refuses to let herself abandoned once again; I think the narrator takes a sympathetic view of Emily, of all that she missed in life and what circumstances led her to, thus the rose become an offering of sorts. That’s how I see it at least
In our class we were told that it was written in 2nd person, and that the POV was the more so the generalized views of the town, described by one person (most likely female). It’s here-say from other towns people, and has been passed down over the years. Logically speaking, there is no way this one towns person could have been alive to see Emily’s early youth and see her as an elder and after her death. So it’s not entirely 1st person. Our professor is explicitly told us this.
I think Homer Barron was the rose. Much in that a spinsterish old woman would have preserved a rose from her youth. Thus being able to relive a brighter past while reflecting on the dead dried decayed flower.
Seven years later, this video is still helping students. Thank you!!!
