Hello Charlie . . . for some strange reason I'm addicted to watching your videos,
I find them interesting, entertaining and a little bit educational. I'll never be a brick layer, but, as a graphic designer I can understand the creativity and precision and hard work in your job.
Thank you so much for these fantastic videos.

Back in the day (80’s), all the brickies would ‘season’ a new trowel, by roughing the edges slightly and taking the shine off of the palm and bend the handles to suit how they worked.

Those look like the thermalite blocks I used to use back in the UK over forty years ago.
They look a lot longer in size but they are so light you can lay them with one hand just like laying a brick.
Two brickies could build a garage in a day and they were very strong walls.
I will never understand why they were never produced in Australia as they are mainly made from power station dust.
They would be a great product for walls that could be rendered and look amazing.
They have a similar block here called Hebel which requires a special compound to bed them and they are very expensive.
These Thermalite blocks are bedded with normal mortar and are a lot more reasonable in cost.

Toothing out is frowned upon because it introduces a plane of weakness which undermines the structural integrity of the building. You nailed it yourself, its impossible to get the same full connection between brick/block and mortar. And its more likely that you will leave voids when trying to force the mortar in retro actively.

When the mortar drops down the cavity, after removing excess mortar from the bricks just laid, Does this affect the damp proof course in any way ? I’m not a brickie just a DIYer who is interested. It’s not a criticism I’m just asking.Does the Mortar make a difference if it builds up at the bottom of the cavity. Or is it of no consequence?

I would disagree. Years ago, we always did face work first. Knocked the snots off and then backed it up with the blocks. Far easier to keep cavity clean. The big plus was setting out all your openings to work bricks too. Just saying😉

    • @andrewray1918

@@justycrusty yeah it was bricks, scrape back then blocks. Was cleaner then I agree but maybe blocks 1st is best as capitalises on using profiles, sets window levels, and helps preventing wind damage costs, since blocks are easier to repair than brick panels...
