- Step one has done its job and now it is time to get rid of all the other weeds. We are here at the Great Lakes Ace Hardware project house and we are riddled with weeds. But it is OK, Memorial Day is near and we are going to help clear it up with Scotts Step 2. Going by our E.M.I.L. reference, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, it is time to throw down some weed killer (Step 2). Remember, this lawn has never been treated so it is going to take multiple applications and possibly a season or two before this lawn looks amazing. Slow and steady wins the race guys. Before we know it we will be over seeding again this fall again but not before we put down step 3. Make sure to SUBSCRIBE and hit the BELL to be notified for when it is time to throw down Step 3! I use to do the Scott’s step 4 program with no success. I would always get burn spots in my lawn. I switched to Scott’s pre-emergent early spring, and then a couple throws of milorganite, one late spring and the other will be in the fall. I spot treat weeds with the ortho weed killer that’s safe for grass (green bottle). My lawn is hearty and healthy. Oh yeah, don’t forget the grubex once a year!
I did this step program as I call it, last season & my lawn never looked better. Neighbors ask how I did it. Doing it again this season & just applied step 2 this morning. I’m a little concerned about my backyard cuz I’m teaching my oldest about lawn care. Let’s hope he doesn’t burn the grass. 🤞🏼

The nitrogen will help out but if there are no weeds you can always find another nitrogen source that doesn't have weed killer in it. I would get that grub killer down as soon as you can!

How do you find out what kinds of grasses are in your lawn? Cool weather or warm weather grasses?
You could take samples to your local extention office and have them identify it. Or they make apps on the phone where you take a picture and it can identify it as well. The way I did it was picked a few blades and looked online at what popular grasses were in my state and zone.
Doesn't it absorb through the roots?
I don't know. I think Tortoise power might be an option. They will eat the weeds and then fertilize the lawn. They are like the new Robo mowers except you don't need to run any wires or charge them. 🤣

What do you recommend now that memorial day is upon us and step 1 has yet to be put down?
Probably jump to step 2 and make sure you do 3&4 when the time is right, and next season you can start fresh. I started this last season and my yard has never looked this good!
Can I go right to step 2 ? Because the time of year ?
If your window has passed on step one I don't see a problem but I am not a turf specialist by any means. It would be a could source of nitrogen. I know that nitrogen helps keep clover away and this bag has a lot in it!
How do I measure my lawn?

Ya I hear ya. Fertilizer in general is becoming insane. My favorite scotts green max is up 20 dollars from previous years at Sam's club!
