I purchased the DW a few years ago and assembled an entire kitchen of cabinets including screwing fixings to the wall studs. I got used to the twist motion very quickly. I also had to replace all the outlets in my son’s large home after a flood and it saved me with all the screws to be done. I use it for tool and appliance repairs etc. and just about all medium duty work. It is probably the most used tool in my extensive shop. I do use it for driving screws into wood for hinges and door furniture. It even drills the holes using 1/4” shank drills. But when it comes to construction screws in heavy work then obviously I go to the impact driver. So many small screwdrivers are 4 volt but this one is 8 volt, It makes a big difference. About 99% of the time I use it in pistol grip format.
The DeWalt is my favorite of the electric screwdrivers. A big value of the gyro is being able to hold it in awkward positions and still get it to work one-handed. If you play with it a bit you can also switch it into pistol mode with one hand. The clutch allows you to approximate a certain torque for fine screws (think PC parts, RC cars) and it's still powerful enough to drive in sheet metal screws. In general it's also a good option when you DON'T want an impact that could risk stripping or over-torquing a fastener.
When we got this one at work I thought the gyroscopic motion would be a gimmick, but it feels so natural in any position you use it. It's very easy to operate with one hand, so you can use the other hand for holding things up. I was able to mount quite heavy light fixtures with this solo. That would usually be a 2 man job.
I think you meant well, but this comparison fails. Cordless screwdrivers should be showcased doing things someone might do with an unpowered screwdriver. No one on Planet Earth except maybe Chuck Norris is sinking Torx bits into tree trunks using a screwdriver and no pilot hole. You should have shown normal tasks, such as replacing outlet covers, Christmas toy assembly, drawer handle tightening, and other household tasks that normally call for an unpowered screwdriver.
I agree. From that perspective yes, it is not what you’d use it for though many people talk about the high torque of the DeWalt Gyro. I was trying to show the difference in torque. But it was made clear it wasn’t a typical use. Thanks for commenting!
This comparison does not “fail”. Why compare this unit, or any similar, to a standard screwdriver? Everyone knows what you can do with a regular screwdriver, and it’s “torque” is limited to whatever the user can apply. I say it’s very appropriate to demonstrate what kind of torque these can apply.
I've dabbled in cheapo cordless screwdrivers and finally pulled the trigger on the Dewalt. This thing is the real deal. Faster RPM's than anything else I've used (those long electrical outlet machine screws were painful with a cheap slow unit). The gyroscope motor was extremely intuitive and had it figured out after a screw or 2. Impressed and in love after a day of changing recepticals and switches.
I have the dewalt screwdriver but mine is the fixed position one, I wish when I bought I knew there was a version that had the switchable handle but still make a lot of use of it
I'm not a DeWalt fan, but my 20ish year old DeWalt screwdriver still works. Batts need replacing, and are not cheap. Picked up a Metabo/HPT because is was on sale at Lowe's and I like their stuff. The Metabo and the Milwakee version (not the Surge in this video) look identical. Having said that, DeWalt has a winner here for this class of tool. The gyro is interesting, tho I'd probably come to love it. The handle and the ring light on the front are excellent design choices. Also, the trigger control is way better than the F/R side switch on the Metabo and Milw. The Milw Surge is a sweet tool, and the M12 battery options (big and small) is a great feature of the M12 series. Now, if there were a universal form factor for batteries . . .
I have had the Dewalt for over 3 years and use it pretty much daily for work I have probably charged it less than 10 times, Charges fast (less than an hour) I love the gyro no fumbling with forward reverse buttons. An excellent screw spinner Great for removing panels.
I know I’m in the minority, but I found the gyroscopic speed control on the DeWalt frustrating to use. I use my screwdriver for gunsmithing and most of my screws are hex head (Allen bits) or Torx. I find that I often need to rotate the tool to line the bit up for engagement, which put it in an awkward position once I rotated it further to actually turn the unit on to rotate the screw and reach full speed (for disassembly). The handle would be almost 90 degrees (or more) from my start position once I aligned the unit with the screw and then rotated it for full speed. So you either start out of position and rotate to somewhere more neutral, or you start in a neutral position and rotate to something out of position. It’s built well and powerful, but I’m planning to try the Milwaukee since it operates more like a conventional electric drill. I’ll keep the DeWalt around the house since it is a good tool.
The Dewalt is a great tool and many have a hard time with the "Gyro" but once you get used to it you should have no issues. Can't compare it to the Milwaukee impact driver but its good to see its capabilities. The Dewalt is my tool of choice when it comes to light to medium work and it goes with me all the time as part of my small EDC tool bag. Great review👍! Kudos from NYC🗽.
Thanks for commenting and thanks for the feedback. Yes it take a little getting used to but then you aren't fumbling around for buttons to change change direction. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the review. So the Dewalt will stop screwing if it reach maximum torque? I am looking for that kind of cordless screwdriver. I have one (non dewalt) but it keeps screwing when it reach max and damaging the screws.
The DeWalt is worth the money. One of the best tools I’ve used. The gyroscope is well made and responsive. You can fasten or loosen screws quickly or slowly depending on your natural hand motion. It also has a lock, so you can use it like a normal screwdriver without worrying about it going off. One advantage I don’t think you mentioned is the DeWalt can take any Impact bit, so you really just need the bits and this one device to do everything you want with fasteners. Overall, I’m honestly kind of shocked Milwaukee and Makita haven’t made their own gyroscopics. Even DeWalt seems to be on the fence about it now somehow. It’s a different battery line, but this tool has a strong niche in the sub-Impact, save-on-weight-and-space market that I guarantee does exist. No one knows this thing exists though, that’s the problem. I show it to guys at work and they have no idea what it even is.
Also worth noting, where a lot of jobs will mandate that you can’t/shouldn’t even use Impacts on finishing projects, this tool has gotten me approval from foremen. Since you can control the speed easily, unlike the Impact there or at all with the Craftsman, you can comfortably use it to save your wrists while not damaging screwheads.
This wasn't a review of the tool used for its intended purpose. Are you driving screws into wood? Use an impact driver. Are you looking for a tool to take the place of a manual screwdriver? Assembling furniture, electrical work, fine trim work? That's what a power screwdriver is great for. It's along the lines of chucking a torx bit in an SDS-max rotary hammer and seeing if you can drive a desk screw in with it, then stating it would work better if you could turn off the hammer part.
I have a Milwaukee screw gun 24 0 1 - 20 Non impact And it Kix ass But I do like the Dewalt driver And we'll probably get one I did like the way the gentleman displayed how it works. Awesome
You should compare the Milwaukee 4v screwdriver. I bought this Dewalt but took it back because I didn’t like it and just paid the price for the Milwaukee 4v screwdriver. I still like the Milwaukee screwdriver 4v better because I also had the Milwaukee 2.4 v NiCad earlier for simple light duty jobs but difficult to get the NiCad batteries. I tried others but nothing compared to Milwaukee 4v screwdriver, unfortunately pricy at $150+ but worth it. I also have the Milwaukee m12 screwdriver for other jobs. You have to be careful with an impact driver that might strip the screw. I also have the Milwaukee 12v screwdriver for more torque than 4v.
Ive considered running electric screwdrivers but it seems like nothing beats either a Milwaukee M12 or just a regular screwdriver maybe I'd think different if I had a bag smaller than a TPXXL
From what I can tell I guess this isn’t as much a comparison between the Milwaukee vs the screwdrivers but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Dewalt vs Milwaukee’s I think 2 electric screwdrivers I know they have one of similar size to the Dewalt and another that’s pistol grip only, I think the pistol grip only is the “newer” of the two.
Wow just the products i was looking into. Would be good to see these tools disassembling a small appliance with a lot of screws . My space heater broke i took it apart in 15 minutes, it had like 20 screws and i couldn't find them😂.
Sorry this is the worst experience I’ve had in a tool comparison ever, it like hey let me grab what I bought from Home Depot and see how it compares to my impact driver and then let me be a sales person for Milwaukee
Milwaukee doesn't have a product that compares to the DeWalt screw driver. That Milwaukee driver isnt a direct comparison i wish Milwaukee would do something similar size to the dewalt

The thing I hate the most about some of these electric screw driver is wasting more money buying one after another because it just never could deliver the power and torque when you needed it the most in more than one different application. So you just end up buying more tools, which is very counterproductive. I just want one that can deliver the unparalleled power and torque that no matter what you are trying to accomplish. It is there ready to deliver it. I don't want a compromise tool that is good for one job and then failed miserably at another that is similar but requires more raw power and torque to get it done in one go.
this question is for anyone with this tool, particularly the one with the rotating handle and clutch like in this video. does yours rattle when you shake it?
@@projectpinehills thanks so much for answering me. i emailed dewalt about it and i got a very automated feeling email back saying to return it. When you looked into it where did you find your info cause i couldnt find any.
I ordered a 2nd one and it behaved the same way. Noise in the collet… not something I’ve seen with other collets on impacts and the craftsman screwdriver for example.
I really love that DeWalt screwdriver. Frankly, I'm just too damn cheap. LOL Maybe another couple of years of doing IT work and my wrists will hurt enough that I can have my doctor write a prescription and use my flex spending account. 😇
I am surprised that there are not more positive comments about the craftsman! yes, I do have the m18 - driver, gun, and the big impact but, the craftsman is phenomenal for kids toys, ship to furniture, cabinets, and all the other tiny things around the house that a domesticated guy deals with. I'd rather be wrenching on larger items that need the big guns, but the family's small projects is where I find most of my time spent now days and that little craftsman has saved my wrist many times !
I have the cheaper DW. Use it every day at work. I love the idea but i find its very hit and miss. Sometimes ill have to press the button 5+ times to get the gyro function to engage. And this is my second one, took the first one back because i thought it was faulty. I REALLY want to love it, and a lot of the time I do. But the gyro is so flakey that it's incredibly annoying.
I like Milwaukee hands down. But next time you should use the Milwaukee screw gun. And not the impact, also, the crassman is based off of the Mac tools screwdriver saint. Make saint model just a lot more, let's expensive.
Do you have this effect if you turn the screwdriver quickly to the zero position or is the gyroscope of my screwdriver faulty? th-cam.com/users/shortskjtdK8gVpXc
I’ve tested and mine does not do that. I can tell that the gyroscope does not like sudden snap movements in opposing directions. It seems to throw the gyroscope off. Yours seems to be going into a mode that’s designed to force you to push the trigger again, resetting the gyroscope. Thanks for watching! 👍
I'm trying to follow the logic of comparing an impact driver to a cordless screw driver? What's the point? That's like comparing drone to an airplane...
Yeah, don't use an impact driver to put on electrical wall plates. As long as you're looking at drivers check out the Vessell 220USB P1. It feels like a screwdriver.
Wow, the "impact driver" was able to screw a screw into a piece of tree, while the two electric screwdrivers failed. This review is worthless other than to show the Dewalt is a little stronger in the screw into a tree stump than a craftsman. Something anyone over the age of 18 already knew! Now give it a try with a Dewalt DCF961B 1/2 inch torque wrench. I'll come back in the next decade to see the results.
This comparison really makes the Dewalt look pretty useless. Just a hair more powerful than Craftman, but with a really large footprint. The Craftsman is good to use like a ratcheting screwdriver for low torque jobs. The M12 is a must for almost all jobs.
The automatic spindle lock makes the Craftsman handy. You pretty much summed it up. The Milwaukee M12 Surge is 2 lb and the battery adds more weight. So you cut the weight by more than half going with the DeWalt at 1.1 lb. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Can’t compare an impact to screwdrivers. If I go to grab a screwdriver… I want a “screwdriver”. I don’t want something that’ll strip my screwhead or my bit.

DeWalt DCF 680 N-2 is i like it but our Asian online Lazada shoppe don't have they have DeWalt 008 only Loong side
I’m not familiar with the 008. Thanks for watching!
try and find a genuine Dewalt replacement battery for this that is affordable.
Hard to come by?
out of stock everywhere unless you want to pay 94$ .@@projectpinehills
😲
I have the dewalt and you can use it manually too
That is correct, it has a spindle lock mechanism that allows you to use it manually. Thanks for watching! 👍
The comparison is moot when you did not include the excellent Milwaukee M4 Screwdriver. The model you featured isn't even a screwdriver.
Haha, it’s not featured. It’s there for torque illustration. Thanks for watching!
You are comparing an electric screwdriver to an impact driver?
No, trying to show different screwdriver torque. The impact is just for illustration.
Do you have this effect if you turn the screwdriver quickly to the zero position or is the gyroscope of my screwdriver faulty?

I’ve tested and mine does not do that. I can tell that the gyroscope does not like sudden snap movements in opposing directions. It seems to throw the gyroscope off. Yours seems to be going into a mode that’s designed to force you to push the trigger again, resetting the gyroscope. Thanks for watching! 👍
I'm trying to follow the logic of comparing an impact driver to a cordless screw driver? What's the point? That's like comparing drone to an airplane...
Yup 👍 Thanks for watching!
Not really a comparison more like a difference between
When you compare you also point out the differences. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, don't use an impact driver to put on electrical wall plates. As long as you're looking at drivers check out the Vessell 220USB P1. It feels like a screwdriver.
Thanks I’ll check it out. Thanks for watching!
So yeah we got it.. the Kia Rio can not move like the M1A2 Abrams in rough muddy terrain. Fair enough 😁
Not really what the point was… the impact was for people who may not be familiar with impacts. Thanks for watching!
@@projectpinehills Yeap! You've got a point! 😃
Cheek of ya using a dirty Milwaukee bit in it 😂😂😂
Ha didn’t even think about it… I just like those 3 1/2” bits. Thanks for watching!
GOOD IDEA BUT IT'S ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, TO DAAM BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.
Yeah that’s my dislike as well. I like the craftsman size. Thanks for commenting!
Gotta be apples to apples...
Right and it is, thanks for watching!
It’s great how excited you have gotten about this lol. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
I wish DeWalt made this with a fwd/rev switch...
Good point, I could see that! 👍
I thought that too. Once I got used to it, I'll never go back
This comparison really makes the Dewalt look pretty useless.
8volt battery. Okay then.
Yes 4, 8 and 12 volts between the 3 tools.
My Gyroscopic is my most used driver.
Thanks for watching and posting! 👍
They’re not drills!
That’s right, it’s an impact and 2 screwdrivers 🪛 thanks for watching! 👍
👍
Thanks for watching! 👍
Thanks for uploading.
They all too big.
Learn from Vessel.
Ha, that craftsman is no bigger than Vessel.
Misleading on wrong job !!!!!!
Ha, that’s all explained in the video. If you missed it, watch it again. Thanks for watching!
I think the screwdriver sucks
