    This particular piece just does something to me, that I can't explain. Hear this on his documentary by BURNS on public TV I know at lease 10-12 yrs ago. I just knew just that I have it. Always sound fresh. Those strings such a compliment!!

    "Just Friends" is a popular song that has become a jazz standard . The song was written in 1931 by John Klenner with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis. Famous and beautiful version: Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan. Also beautiful the swing version of Sharon Clark on youtube "Sharon Clark Just Friends"
    Ciao e grazie!

    Nothing about this perfect record is 'a pity'...
    It's a gem and I know that Charlie Parker had no problem whatsoever with any aspect of it.
    Thanks for posting this!
    Best wishes from the U.K.

    Just Follow the Bouncing Ball on his TV Show, "Sing Along With Mitch".
    I was stunned when I saw his name on this Charlie Parker Album, and found out he was working with Bird in the group with strings which played club gigs for a little while.

    It's Forest Withaker in "Bird" (directed by Clint Eastwood, 1988). Forest Whitaker's performance as Parker earned him critical acclaim and several awards, including the Best Actor award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination.

    @cushmoor Totally agree, the genius of the black man is every where on the planet there for all those that can comprehend. Though I disagree that yawa or Yahoo I mean YWH had anything to with Parker except for stealing his original name and giving him ol' hook noses monica. Guess there is a price for genius. Also I wonder how the indigenous blacks of america felt- guess you would say they were simply 'sad' regarding the europeon decimation of their land and home.

    Wow! Sir, you would have been considered a racist in the 1950s. Wake up and live in the reality of a multicultural, multiracial society. In the area of music, Charlie Parker was a genius whose music will be revered long after your racist comments have been forgotten.

  • @gsco82
    @gsco82 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Many fans of jazz would disagree with this comment. While you are perhaps correct in saying that jazz , or Charlie Parker's music is not "black", jazz is distinct from classical music and contains characteristics which were formed by the work of many great black musicians. It is simplistic to say that Bach, great composer which he was, gave the world all the elements of jazz.

    What a waste, he was one hell of a horn player,He couldnt leave the gear alone,and thats what eventually killed him,Not many ever kick,once their addicted like Charlie was,He was not yet even 40 when he died,Stay off the gear,it will kill you.

    I recently watched movie "Whiplash" when a music teacher search for a stupend musician like "Bird", and read a Julio Cortazar's book titled "El Perseguidor" (The Persecutor) that narrate fateful and somber days of live of that prodigious and talented musician, and awake my interest to find more about his legacy :)

    @conn6m No. You don't have to play saxophone to know how brilliant this song is or just how brilliant Parker's playing is in general. You can play any instrument and still fully appreciate his phrasing and his melodies. Playing saxophone would help you appreciate how difficult this song is to play but I'm not really thinking about that when I listen.

    unfortunately from the film, There used to be a mimed version with Bird, it was impossible in those days to do a live recording due to cost, it was his favourite recording. Where is the mimed version ???????

    's a pity that the white Europeans took the drums from the slaves on their arrival to the American slave colonies. Could you imagine how the rhythm section would have sounded with all those African poly rhythms flooding the underneath of this song. It would have been a different man. Like C.Alkebulan playing instead of rigid Parker.

    • @joedeluciad2484
      @joedeluciad2484 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need. 4/4 is plenty enough for Bird. His phrasing has so many rhythmic impositions that he doesnt need weird time signatures or any of that bullshit. True rhythm should come from the phrasing of the melodies not the rhythm section. Listen to latin/african music, melodically it is not as strong as jazz possibly it is limited by the complex rhythms/

    Charlie Parker says in an interview somewhere that there are only two musicians. J.S.Bach and Cole Porter. Nothing in between and nothing after.
    What makes Parker great is his dedication to the instrument. All his music is white. There is nothing in Jazz that Bach hasn't already given the world. The black man is still banging drums in Africa and is still banging drums wherever he has not been influenced by white culture. Charlie would be angry to hear anyone calling his music black. Get a grip.
