Thank you SO MUCH for the finish on my guitar and spending 4 days building my guitar with such a wonderfully helpful team of deeply passionate teachers was perfect.
And the bonus of course was to take part in this episode…

In 1967 - hippy time, I hung my guitar on my mum's washing line and threw tiny cans of enamel paint at it. The result was something similar!! My dad was not happy that some of the paint ended up on his lawn!!

You can do this with spray paint too and it comes out with some interesting cells depending on how/what angle you spray them on the water.

Experimental luthiery enlightens us all. Clear coat dipping works fine if you can suspend the part while drying to avoid visible marks - but it can be kind of messy. Large parts can be "basted" in a tray - pour on clear coat, then spoon the runoff back onto the uncoated sections. Keep everything clean and the leftover can be saved and used for the next part to be dipped.

I tried a couple of years back with several techniques and failed.
(My poor test guitar body went through hell)
Enamel hobby paint (with Borax) and also just using rattle can acrylics.
I always laid some fresh prime-and-paint on before each test and allowed it to dry.
I've been wanting to revisit it and discovered the marbling paint that you used.
This came at the right time as it has shown me a lot of things I need to be aware of when doing this.
I'm considering transferring the paint to a syringe, so I can get it onto the water more quickly and evenly.
Plus I think I'm going to need a much bigger tub to dip the body into.

Cool video... I've dipped a few guitars in the past and I used a painted (white) base coat lightly sanded and it worked great. You dont need a primer base for the paint to stick. DEFINITELY get a bigger dipping tank or bin. That is really important. You have to work quick once the paint hits the water. It dries really quick. Also, lose the lamp. I know you want good light for the video, but it is making the paint dry even quicker, which you dont want. Good luck.

Having done several of these, here's my tips:
Get rid of the little "shaker tops" on the Magic Marble bottles and use "eye dropper applicators" to place the paint with purpose.
Use WAY more paint than you think you need.
Move with purpose! You basically have to have a ticking clock in your head. From the first drop of paint hitting the water, you need to be done within 3 to 4 minutes tops. Otherwise the paint skins up too much and gets gloppy.
Use a hair dryer to blow the remaining paint off the surface after dipping.
    😎

    • @stephanegonthier-dz3mq
      @stephanegonthier-dz3mq 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Good idea! I find those tops frustrating as the drop is unpredictable! I’ll use that tip for my next one!

It took me about 3 weeks of experimenting before I could figure it out with the best water temps, borax AND magic marble paints. The OG guys like darren (who did the original Jem) and even the newer guys keep their secrets so closely gaurded. Its really a skill to keep colors seperated, the direction of the “waves” and making sure the paint doesn’t bubble or pull.

  • @ltd4all

imagine using a color-shift paint as a base...(blue-purple-gold) with "1980's neon" hydro dipped paint....So the base color will shift, and highlight the curves of the body, while being eye-catching with the neon swirls....Imagine using a guitar body that's less "slab-like", and more curved, like a Les Paul, or an SG with those carved horns for the paint to color shift underneath....

You might want to reevaluate your video encoding to a much higher quality transcode after editing. It seems like you're losing a lot of quality somewhere.
