Hi, One of the examples of how diverse the city of New York is with its architecture (not only in the face of New York Skyscrapers, but also in the face of many other styles, types of New York architecture), culture, characters of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and other parts of this city. I went " Forest Hills Gardens" in the Queens, years ago, because of my job those times. Also, despite all these social and other problems in this city ( wich also means that New York City is so expensive to live for most, ordinary people), after we lived 24 years in this city, New York will always be part of our life with its pros and cons, with its diverse characters, diverse beautiful architecture, cultures of different places of Manhattan, Brooklyn and other parts of New York. One of my favorite places of New York City are im Manhattan: " Gramercy Park" area, Upper West and East Sides, Greenwich Village and others, in Brooklyn: Greenpoint, Brooklyn Heights and others... Bets neighborhood on queens. Def not compared to Long Island brookville or areas of the north shore. But yes this place def has that old world charm that most of queens has eradicated.
It’s really not great anymore. Tons of trash on the street, lots of extreme mental illness. As with a lot of rich neighborhoods in NYC, there’s a huge element of “decay.” So like people whose parents or grandparents were rich but they themselves just inherited a house and never did anything with it.
I grew up in Elmhurst but went to school in Kew Gardens. My school bus used to drive through Forest Hills and (just like Tim) I grew up dreaming of living in one of these houses. Hanging out in Forest Hills on the weekend was always such a treat. I’m based in Asia now and it’s been years since I last walked down these streets and I’m amazed how everything is just as pretty as I remember it (maybe even moreso).
@@regurgitatedbucketofslime4518 it’s 29% Asian, 15% Hispanic, 3% black 46% white. It is a quiet, clean, walkable very safe neighborhood with amazing restaurants, public transport and architecture, it’s not some closed up all white suburb that’s only accessible by car, it is simply the ideal suburb, it’s what all of them should look like, or you think it’d be better if it looked like Jamaica ?
I’m shocked by this place. This is 20 minutes from Midtown?! Holy moly! It’s so lovely and quiet. The only drawback would be that the HOA is nuts and strict. I don’t want to deal with that level of intrusion when I come home.
i grew up in Forest Hills Gardens. great memories. the smell of leaves in autumn. winter nights. summer walks. you should also see the beautiful elementary school: PS 101. And the Community House, which has a pool. One more thing: parks. It has beautiful parks. Some you can see -- some are literally hidden and only truly accessible to the houses that surround them! Those were perhaps the most amazing thing. Finally, the celebrities: the nurse in Rear Window, Jimmy Breslin, Geraldine Ferraro, Dale Carnegie, Helen Keller -- and more.

I’ve only ever seen Forest Hills from the LIRR, and it’s always the train station. Every time I would go to the city whether it’s with my friends or my parents….I was always fascinated by how the buildings looked…..it definitely gave me an English, and older vibe.
One of my favorite neighborhoods. Took a trip to NYC for my birthday earlier in the year and enjoyed a nice cigar while walking through Kew Gardens and Forest Hills Gardens one night. A beautiful way to end the day.
My neighborhood for 14 years now. I got engaged and married there, have a beautiful 9 year old girl going to school there. Totally love it. I will probably leave NYC one day, but will always go back to FH!
So, Brit here, fan of your videos and here I am trying to find some things to do in Queens as I am finally fulfilling my life long dream to visit NYC in December, and imagine my surprise as the first picture you showed of the British villages was the village I went to high school in, just 20 minutes from house...! The village is Weobley (pronounced Webley) in our glorious county of Herefordshire. Small world! Thanks for all the NYC info Jon!
I grew up in FH. Graduated FHHS Many of my friends lived in the Gardens I worked US Open in mid 70's parking cars in my friends driveway and shuttling people to the stadium Austin street was our hangout It was our own little heaven GREAT memories!
I lived there for twenty years just around the corner on Austin street. I remember the beautiful landscaping at Springtime... and at Christmas, the green wreaths on every lamp post. There is a magnificent Art Deco building I think was called the Leslie, and a small Carolingian style church in the Gardens I sometimes went to. Leaving the busy commercial Austin street & entering under the archways, is like stepping back in time. Jon thanks for the video...well done.
Beautiful, the garden communities of queens are quite stunning. The main ones, Forest Hills Gardens, Jackson Heights historic district, and Sunnyside Gardens are just amazing!
My family lived in this part of Forest Hills, outside the boundary of Forest Hills Gardens. The stadium also hosted US Open Tennis before it moved to Flushing. Before I came along, my parents and sister heard the Beatles, in 1964, play at the stadium and were brought in by helicopter. They opened the windows of our home all the way to hear the concert. After I came along and before moving to another part of Queens, our parents would take us to the stadium to watch some tennis. In 1960, my Mom a new immigrant to the USA, saw JFK campaigning for the 1960 presidential election in the Forest Hills Plaza.
The cherry blossoms are in bloom this week, all over forest hills Garden. Crap Apple trees too. Absolutely, gorgeous. Have been living in forest hills since 1997. I count myself lucky. Whenever, I want to go for a walk I head for the Garden.
Jon, nicely done as always. I must tell you Forest Hills Garden as a whole is a city landmark for sure. It's a great escape from the congested hustle and bustle of city life. Keep up the good work. Your friend Mike in Boca.
I grew up a couple of miles away in Jamaica, Queens. Just like him, I had wish to live in one of those Tudor style homes. It’s still has that English hamlet feel. Great video as always.
My wife and I recently moved there and the only reason I agreed to leave the "City" was if I had good transit connections, access to shopping and restaurants and a beautiful house. It checked all the boxes and is an amazing find so close to the city.

I would want to visit Forest Hills when I visit NYC. I had no idea this place existed until 5 years ago. Seriously, nobody ever talked about it. I was aware there where neighborhoods like this in NYC but not to this extent. So its protected and landmarked as an Historic District. Which is great no one can come in and mess it up with subpar common taste.
I use to hang out in Forest Hills. Pretty decent people. I didn't realize that it was more for wealthy people. Then again my friends who lived there parents were things like Lawyers.
Wow this is so freaky it just blows my mind how does this happen, a lot of the places you show us in your videos I've been to those same places, we walked all over this entire neighborhood looking at the houses, we were so deep in the neighborhood we got all turned around and for the longest time we couldn't find our way out but it was all good more things to look at trying to find our way out
Grew up in Queens and this hidden treasure was definitely not on my radar. Thank you for taking us along on your journey it was very interesting. Looks like a movie set so perfectly beautiful. Bet they don’t let folks do brake jobs in their driveways lol, Bill in Fort Wayne Indiana
You should explore Malba, Queens. You'll see such impressive mansions and won't feel like you're in NYC whatsoever. I'd say it's even more rich than Forest Hills Gardens
I've known about Forest Hills for decades, but I never read up on it, so I always had an image in my head of something similar to a wealthy Fairfield County, forested town. Now that I've seen it for the first time in this video, the image in my head hasn't been too far off. The homes are a bit closer together than I imagined though, which means I envisioned that it looked LESS like NYC than it actually does.
Glad to see another guy giving you a perspective on Forest Hills Gardens. Also glad to see you make a full on video about Forest Hills Gardens. I may have lived close to here, but Tim seems like a more knowledgable guy than me

Love ❤️ it! I'm from Queens Southside, now in Tx,Sometimes on the weekends we all use to get together and go to some of the Pubs, & Restaurants there in Frorest Hills.Great Video 💙💜🤎🖤
You should really check out Addisleigh Park and Laurelton and Jamaica Estates, Malba further out in eastern Queens. When you go to these places it feels like you're not in the city at all
So basically the forest hill area is like hoa where there's strict rules on houses looking a certain way and no way to park for outside guests unless you are a resident
Jon I loved this, I am watching from London 🇬🇧 UK. This area looks and feels like England. I do not think its going to be quiet as the tourists are going to love this.
I hope security isn't going around asking random people what they are doing there still. They did that to me for two years straight when I lived there. Mind you I was living there with another Army veteran after we got out and we are both in our 30's. We were simply using our G.I. Bill for school and both had nice jobs working from home. He is Mexican and I am Black. He's from TX and I'm from CA.... I've never had a speeding ticket in my life, much less been into committing crime. Even when I lived in Hollywood, off of Sunset BLVD in a very nice neighborhood twice as nice as this, no cops ever messed with me. Forest Hills was an experience of security and cops harassing us, and neighbors watching us. Our direct neighbors loved us though. This kind of stuff really happens to us. I'm very political, but I am an Independent. I say that to let people know this happens to us in areas Republicans view as too liberal. And it happens in places Democrats see as too conservative and racist. I love your videos, btw. I'm watching them more again because I am thinking about moving back to get my Masters in MIS. I actually do not mind people messing with me; I think it's hilarious making people look stupid for judging me. I just don't like it when people mess with people I care for. My friend hated it and said he will never move back.
I grew up here! The Gardens have always been beautiful. There are actually 2 streets that you can park on without a parking permit Ascan Avenue & 71st Avenue (Continental Avenue) are not private streets. Too bad you couldn't see the Tea Garden. It was absolutely magical. Sometime is trying to raise funds to bring it back again. & there was a Mafia kingpin who used to live in the Gardens over on Greenway down from the Church in the Gardens. There's also a mansion over by Deep Dean that's fantastic
That is not true on the parking bit. If you park on Continental from Station Square to the "gate" between Harrow and Groton, you will get booted. Same on Ascan (not sure of boundary there) I have to put a placard from CITG to take my daughter to Scouts .
It's the standard at all outdoor concerts, actually. This is due to city outdoor noise ordinances. On that note, I actually enjoy seeing shows there, but I don't like that the majority of seating are no-back bleachers. Can't get what you want all the time, I guess.
Can’t disagree. I accidentally walked and discovered this area when I was searching in forest hills for a condo in 2005. The gardens were way over my humble budget. Due to the co-op rules in forest hills,I decided to move to a small condo in the best neighborhood in queens. Best decision I ever made. Overall if I had the cash and retired I might consider this area, however if I ever return back to nyc to live it will likely be in Astoria.
@@TrainsFerriesFeet can’t rent for 2 years. Need board to approve anything. Condo means you can do anything you want except Airbnb. Co-op selling also requires approval. Lot of hassle
True but most co-op boards in NYC are tough. I bought way back in 2006 and although it was tough, the building is sooo well kept. even though the board annoys me lol.
@@Privateuser9999 I'm moving to NYC or Hudson County when I retire and Co-ops have sounded like they're too strict, which is a pain, IMO. I don't want a SFH, so a condo definitely feels like the best option. Renting an apartment sounds risky from a rent increase standpoint.
You are on point. There are pros and cons of a strict co-op board. If managed appropriately, the outcome is a clean environment, with tenants that view the building as a community rather than a free-for-all mentality. I lived in a co-op across from shopping areas, overlooking beautiful blossom trees. This was in the neighborhood of Rego Park (bordering Forest Hills) in Queens. It's one of the many well-kept "secret" family oriented neighborhoods where apartment prices are still within reach. The strict co-op rules also result in tenant safety by not allowing unvetted renters or airbnb visitors. Having 24/7 doorman is a luxury as well and we never had any our packages stolen unlike other buildings that we had lived in with constant package thieves. Anyone interested in buying a co-op where a single family home is outside of their budget should look within the Rego Park area, bordering Forest Hills. I am not an RE agent. :)
Nice neighborhood but unfortunate history of restrictions for many years. You may also want to visit Sunnyside, which was another english style development and current landmarked area.
@FN-1701AgentGodzillaRangerPrime Ω Nowadays the restrictive covenants which limited residence to Caucasian Christians are legally unenforceable, so anyone with the $$$$.
The residents don’t want you to even walk through it. The streets are private. The old tennis stadium is practically falling down. The vibe isn’t good there.
This is one of the meanest street I Ever park here as you see, you need a permit to use parking space because this is a private street. If you don't like the rules, make a complaint to the government and make sure you get a receipt from the towing company.
Malba and Neponsit, Queens has more expensive homes than Forest Hills, btw. Malba, where the mansions are, you can see some people have seaplanes docked behind their houses in Malba. The streets are private and they hire private security to patrol the neighborhood in Malba, Queens. There are baseball celebrities (Mets), famous musicians, Woolworth family, etc.
If you want to see very expensive Tudor Style homes in the NY Metro Area, checkout Westchester County especially Scarsdale or Chappaqua where the Clintons live.
Not as wealthy Sunnyside Gardens close to the Queens borough Bridge is another gem without the elitism of FHG. My family has lived there for 40 years. I went to 2 concerts at the old US OPEN Tennis Stadium in Forest Hills. Peter Gabriel and then Genesis in the early 80's. David Berkowitz aka Son Of Sam lived close to my present home in Westchester. Spike Lee's movie Summer Of Sam is spot on. I remember it well. The blackout from around that time was also a big event in NYC history.
@@Nick0wnszPeople rent in the Gardens all the time and also can get apartments starting at about $500k. A smaller home starts at about $1.3 million. I live in the Gardens.

Beautiful ! BUT . As English as a 59 Cadillac ! But thanks , I love it. (From Eccles, Manchester , England ) .
Love ❤️ it! I'm from Queens Southside, now in Tx,Sometimes on the weekends we all use to get together and go to some of the Pubs, & Restaurants there in Frorest Hills.Great Video 💙💜🤎🖤
Pretty cool . My daily walk from train takes me through Gardens up to Metropolitan Ave.
My cousin lives in the park lane north apartment tower just outside the gardens! Nicest section of queens in my opinion 🏡
That's so awesome how you run into subscribers from all over the world in Queens. So random.
You should really check out Addisleigh Park and Laurelton and Jamaica Estates, Malba further out in eastern Queens. When you go to these places it feels like you're not in the city at all
I know the area well as I live 10 minutes away. Nice tour. Was hoping for a glance of Austin Street shops.
I love seeing this side of new york
So basically the forest hill area is like hoa where there's strict rules on houses looking a certain way and no way to park for outside guests unless you are a resident
That is correct. Visitors can be provided a pass by the homeowner.
Jon I will be marking it on my calendar and I will have a countdown of when I will be in NYC.
wow look wonderful video There is a magnificent Art Deco building I think was called the Leslie good day!!
These houses in Forest Hills remind me of the neighborhood I used to live in.
Yeah that's where Akeems boss Mr. McDoogle lived when Akeem came to America from Zamoonda . The guy still cooks a good burger .
I walk there al the time. It's pretty cool. Celebrities live there. Also, it's near where Spiderman is filmed. Cool part of Queens.
This neighborhood is so pretty!!
The greater Forest Hills area also has great local food
Very cool place! Literally the exact opposite of what I would think of a neighborhood in NYC
Been there x3. Really great video and learning about this area.
Thumbs up!
More videos about forest hill please :) thanks for sharing
This neighborhood looks very similar to a neighborhood in Spokane, WA called Manito.
Just FYI all concerts at Forest Hills stadium must end before 10pm. Absolutely no exceptions.
It's the standard at all outdoor concerts, actually. This is due to city outdoor noise ordinances. On that note, I actually enjoy seeing shows there, but I don't like that the majority of seating are no-back bleachers. Can't get what you want all the time, I guess.
Now I know I've watched this before, but how did I not hit the thumbs up!?? Similarities to ours for sure!
Permit parking no alternate side moving around. Take metropolitan Ave straight onto Williamsburg bridge into lower manhattan
What's unique about the co-op rules in FH?
On my list :)
@@HereBeBarr Cool. Check out it's neighbor Woodside too, though there's enough of interest in either area for a visit I'd think.
This looks just like the village of Scarsdale NY.
I do live here it’s beautiful and Austin street is amazing
Thank goodness for the neighborhood cops, keeping the outsiders away. Thats how this hood managed to stay so calm.
That and the restrictions on who could live there
@FN-1701AgentGodzillaRangerPrime Ω Nowadays the restrictive covenants which limited residence to Caucasian Christians are legally unenforceable, so anyone with the $$$$.
I lived 1 mile away from Forest Park in Richmond Hill.
There's no forest, there aren't any hills, but Forest Hills is the "chef's kiss" of neighborhoods.
I bike....trust me....there are hills...
@@betbenvenuto5005 As a runner.. I know there are hills in FH. 😂
Was looking to see if anyone mentioned Malba. IMO, Forest Hills has nothing on Malba. Respectfully!
@@naomiasg8100 I agree with you
Forest Hills is way too crowded. There's a stinky homeless dude right outside Dunkin' every day.
If you want to see very expensive Tudor Style homes in the NY Metro Area, checkout Westchester County especially Scarsdale or Chappaqua where the Clintons live.
@@FORBIDCharlie1986 homeless people in Subways, Dunkin and the Chinese bakery and in the real subway.
The blackout from around that time was also a big event in NYC history.
born and raised in queens, growing up i was a huge spiderman fan and wasnt until years later i realized he "lived" like 15 mins away from me
This part of queens reminds me alot of Cleveland heights and shaker heights neighborhoods of Cleveland Ohio
The ads selling Forest Hills when it was first built, boast Penn Station to Forest Hills in 12 minutes.
I been there so many times. I used to live in Rego Park
Not one POC family lives in this area!
Do you have $4 million for one of these starter homes. These houses are priceless.
@@Nick0wnszPeople rent in the Gardens all the time and also can get apartments starting at about $500k. A smaller home starts at about $1.3 million. I live in the Gardens.
