This group of young men are worth their weight in gold. The content and conversation here is just the best. I start checking the days of the week waiting for the next episode. Then it's time for me to become anxious anticipating the topics that will be chosen to be talked about. I love this channel and everything about it. Great job guys and just keep it up. God Bless you all.
Yes…Ben’s bonus is definitely his wife🤣 and they all work so well together. He’s patient enough to learn from his soil and improves on his own carpentry plans, etc. These three are my champs as for TH-camrs.
Good job everyone. This was your best podcast so far. You all could add great comments and ideas based on your families needs. Ben you said it, " grow only what your family likes to eat". Of course you can experiment with an extra item or 2 each year. But get your families basic foods grown & stored for the winter and following springs meals. The ones that go bad or that you have too much of makes great pig & chicken feed. So raise those chickens & pigs for leas.
Quite a number of chuckles in this one ...Jason, I can't believe you actually took a nap. LOL. I'm glad y'all got to take a vacation though, to the beach. I know the family must have really enjoyed that. Loved the moose stories, Al. I didn't realize they were so dumb as not getting off the road. Ben's hot pepper stories made my mouth burn just thinking about it. Hope each of you have a Blessed week ahead.
I'm a market Steader. I grow microgreens, garlic, turmeric, and ginger, cherry tomatoes. and any other crops that I can squeeze in. I'm semi-retired so it's just my wife and I, but we could easily go through 50 chickens/year we don't can anymore since the kids are grown. We freeze a lot of produce and meat.
I feel ya Ben! 5 of us and we have gone through almost 3 deer, 2 beef, 1 pig and 50 chickens this year! As far as figuring for meat i figure approximately 1 lb of meat per person per day. And the way to figure garden produce is how many meals per week will we eat this .....We almost never have leftovers and any scraps from cooking get turned into meat or eggs! Our health is so much better and that makes up for the higher cost of food!
😮 1 lbs per day/per person? I guess I need to figure this out too. Thanks. Maybe I might eat half a chicken in 5 days, but that's making tacos, a sandwich, maybe enchiladas... so it stretches further. Good thing to figure out. Thanks
I bought a lottery ticket when it was in the billons and i said if I win I’m going to donate money to Meg and Lorain for nice outdoor kitchens and a tractor for Jason a barn for Ben and funds for lumnah to put towards their projects. Sorry guys I didn’t win. But I would have shared. I love watching all three of y’all channels. Y’all are such hard workers.
Jason, I saw your video when you tried to move your pigs and they had no interest in the bucket at all. Your "I don't trust no pigs" was born. 🤣😂🤣 I love this podcast. Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts and experiences on your homesteads. Take care. 🤗
Are quiet, minimal space, reproduce quickly. My dad would not eat rabbits bc during the depression they raised rabbits in the basement for food (midwest).
Good morning, Al, Ben, and Jason! Your podcasts are very interesting and entertaining. Ben, we use neem oil here in Rutherfordton on squash for squash bugs. It works for us.
Dang... I wish I were your neighbors.. Fresh eggs, maybe an occasional farm raised pork chop or chicken.. or zucchini. Your families are showing the way. The workd needs you. 🙏
This old gal loves the straight forward humor of you three guys. Note to Ben when it is cooler, I hope Meg can get her little Secret Garden going. Note to Jason: All hard workers are earning a nap time. Note to Al: An older Gentleman at church was going on a Moose hunt to Canada. I asked him how big are Moose. He said, "If you were going to pet a deer on it head, you would reach straight out but a moose you would need a step stool and reach as high as you could. I would not want to meet it on the road. Best wishes from South Louisiana.
Bear you fry / BBQ to greasy. Moose is pretty much like beef. You can use for hamburger or Roast. Caribou sausage is out of this world good. Good luck seeing Moose when what you see in the car is nothing but legs. Great job guys!
❤ I loved watching the Hollers experiencing the fresh horseradish root.😂😂😂 Meg, " I just maced myself" the the rest of the family tried and succeeded doing it to themselves also. 😂😂😂 great family fun. ❤
I love hearing you guys talking, it explains a lot about why you do things the way you do them. Still wish you could get your wives to do a show like yours. I would give you guys 5 stars and you get 5 stars for your individual channels too. Al, please post the info about making the golf cart solar. I am in an electric wheelchair and would like to make it run on solar. Thanks⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Come on Ben. Meg has been canning anything and everything she can grab out of the garden and buy from farmers. The kids have helped. Meg puts on a dinner everyday that makes me envious, bakes bagels, sourdough bread and sandwich breads. Saw you working on a chicken tractor. Looks good. The little one was practicing her filming and greeting her onlookers. Loved the look of your new grill. Cover it up before a storm gets to it. That’s what I saw happening on the Hollar Homestead this week. Ok Jason, your turn. 😂 Love your wonderful sarcastic sense of humor. And your wife is amazing. Al, I’m just getting to know you. Like the podcast. Good luck with your building.
If my memory serves - the old Ball Blue books used to have a chart for how much to grow for x amount of people. Your local extension service should be able to point you in the right direction. It's out there.
Love this cast, love the three of you compare and contrast, something for all your listeners to enjoy. I like it all. The perfect coffee : regardless whether light, medium, or dark roast, brew it strong. It should feel smooth as a velvet mushroom cap on the tongue. It should taste chocolatey rich and roasty-toasty. No smokey, no over-roasted burnt-ashtray.
Bear and moose require knowledgeable processing for palatability. Bear makes amazing meat sticks! It's good combined with something else and meatloaf and meatballs and sausage.....
I just got my coffee from lumnah acres this afternoon so I haven’t had any yet but boy does it smell good. Can’t wait till tomorrow morning. The smell is awesome.
Jalapeños are too violent for me 😂 I grew some and added them to a kabob... One bite and my throat felt like it was just gonna shut down, it was so mean to me that I've decided I'll stick to sweeter peppers
Love the podcast. I always learn something! Hate dark roast. Dark roast is actually burnt beans. Learned that in Hawaii. I still hav to order Al's coffee, that building went up so nice! Jason your humor is great! Love the water catchment vids. Ben, you growing trees from seed is exciting. Thats a great biz plan too.
I watch Suttons Daze Homestead and she cans a lot and she has a formula for how much food she needs to can. It is her husband and herself. Her husband hunts deer and they have deer, they have chickens and pigs. She has a huge channel if interested.
Bro from scratch planted carrots just the other day. She planted the seeds very shallow and then covered them with cardboard weighted it and wet it down? You may want to try that method.
I love dark roast flavor and I can drink more of it because of less caffeine. Caffeine breaks down with heat, so the whole time the coffee is roasting, the caffeine level is dropping. I can drink dark roast all day, but just a couple of cups of light roast leaves me jittery.
We switched to American Bresse chickens, butchered out 71 this year. We also raise rabbit, put 41 in freezer so far this year. Only my husband and I..but we gift to friends & neighbors..they love it when we do! We split beef & pork with my sister & daughter family.
Hey Guys, have you ever heard of the three boys of winter? They are huge Moose that live in Yellowstone. We were driving down the mountain one evening, the three of them came running across the road right smack in front of us. We were so lucky we didn’t hit them. So scary.
Record keeping of what you planted, # of plants, # of inches spaced, success rate, # lbs harvested, # of jars, how long it lasted, " of rain, heat index, amount of compost etc. BEN ADD SAND, WOODCHIP COMPOST AND PEATMOSS. SOW CARROT SEEDS LIGHTLY COVER WITH FINE DUSTING OF SOIL. KEEP SOIL MOIST . I LAY CARDBOARD OVER THEM UNTIL THE MAJORITY OF THEM GERMINATE. THIN THEM OUT AND MULCH.
Lol on the moose. I drove a truck for a living. One winter up in Wyoming had to stop for one on the road another driver started blowing the air horn at it. It tore the hood off took out the radiator the mirrors, windows the truck was totaled.
Your podcasts have all been interesting and entertaining. We are evaluating our garden something like Ben. I won't plant banana peppers next year becauce of the abundance this year. Pretty sure. Hard work always pays off in some way. You three are good examples for the youngers growing up. Well done.
Check out self reliance for quantifying your food needs for your families. Hes got it down to lbs. And calories per family member but personally i think you guys are amazing! My hat is off to you😅
We go by a lamb lasts a month if that’s all you have, mixed with a breakfast for dinner, and night of beans in toast, and a night of takeaway! There’s three of us. And a big steer will last 6 months in same situation, pig lasts maybe three months, or less if we make a lot of sausages, or a ham or bacon from them too. 😊❤
Moose tastes more like beef than deer. Not as gammy as deer. In Maine it is a lottery as well. My husband has been picked twice, his grandfather once and his dad twice so he has been on a few hunts.
Another helpful bit of information would be how many freezers one would need to store "X" amount of meat/produce for their respective families. I think Al has 4 freezers?

Engineer 775 is a great guy for solar projects and off grid living. He is for hire also. I've been watching him for about 8 years. Those stick on or the flexible solar panels are not worth buying. They do not produce the wattage that they claim they are rated for. Ben your idea for unistrutt is better and using a solid panel will give you more power. Just make sure to use a really good charge controller (not Chinese) pure sine wave, and the converter of same quality. Just remember you can only use half the power you produce unless it's not lead acid batteries.
I hate to say this, because I don't like to hear it , but you have to keep maticlous records to figure out what to or can grow. I mean , what did you to to till that soil how much did you plant. Can you check the soil is it acidty or not. How long did it last , do you rotate the crops? Make a large spread sheet and fill it in. Then when its time to plant see what worked. Can you take an on line course to help you with this? It is work. Maybe the children can help with record keeping . It will help them understand the life better and keep them interested.
engineer 775 and farm craft 101 both have electric golf cart videos. Farmcraft has an inverter that he uses with the golf cart to bring remote power wherever he needs it.

Moose is so much better than deer or elk. I would eat moose every day if I could. My grandparents lived as true homesteaders in New Brunswick, Canada so maybe their expertise in butchering and cooking played a part. Love moose!
Thanks guys. Very helpful stuff! The part about "how many chickens to grow" based on what we need as opposed to "what is a good number to start" - that was me. Now I have to rethink my entire livestock number concept!
AL your gardens at your smaller property was massive with huge growing facilities for the growing house/tunnel. you guys need to add seafood and huntrabbits and dewer plus maybe hogs. helps take out some animals doing damage helping landholders plus fishing or gathering crawfish, crabs etc. all the alaskans add salmon and other river fish and catch halibut cod etc
I hope you had a great time at the beach Jason! It doesn't seem like any of you have much vacations. I love getting stuff for cheap at garage sales and estate sales. Cool Ben, convert your golf cart to an off grid vehicle. Wow, solar panels that are a sticker. Good moose story Al. I like dark roast too! The lighter roast stuff hurts my stomach. Yes, it's hard to decide how much vegetables you need to grow for your family. Really it's just my husband and I that eat the vegetables. Our sons are not so much veggie eaters. One of our boys had bad food allergies that were even to carrots. The eggs from our hens, the meat birds, the turkeys, and the pigs they eat a lot more of. I'm making chicken pot pie for dinner with the leftovers from our 6lb meat bird we had for dinner last night. Some of the abundance does go to waste but I'm so glad I have chickens to feed it too. I agree, each year the veggies that do the best are different. I'm not sure why. Thanks guys for this video!
Thanks fellows, enjoyed your chat. Interesting to hear your comments after watching the videos you talked about. Who are you all kidding that you thought 25 chickens would cover a year’s needs. Btw, here in Ontario 3 Costco chickens will cost roughly $33 Canadian, a d I have no idea what they were fed or if they ever saw the sky.
Jason I hope you are enjoying your time off it’s always good to getaway for a bit it’s like it re-energize you and Ben I was thinking when they hit that teenage years they eat a whole lot more and that meat freezer empty a lot faster but it’s all worth it
Google about citrus peels being added to your garden. Not to the compost pile but thrown in raw all around your garden. Insects don't like the scent and are detered. Grapefruit, limes. Oranges and lemons.
Growing vegetables….look into planting veggies that do not have lectins in them…(skins and seeds) look toward healthier and therefor perhaps more profits.
This group of young men are worth their weight in gold.

Ben has an up and coming camera operator in Buggy!
agreed - she did a great job showing the pumpkins :D
That pumpkin footage was to cute.
Buggy has the camera work figured out, and she has the vocal working for herself, too.
What a sweetheart ! ! ❤

Neem oil is GREAT. It kills aphids, ticks, fleas, mites, etc. I add it to my dogs shampoo. Small amounts can be taken internslly too.

Excellent Ben. This year I started a garden. I decided to only grow what we eat. Cilantro I can get at the store for about 50 cents a bunch..
Meg’s an amazing cook 😊

Hi Dee! Hope you have a nice weekend... God bless you as well!
Always great! Thanks. It's so interesting hearing you guys chatting. You cover so many topics ... Good to hear the NittyGritty on what you're doing. 💜💙💚💫
Hey Jason, Maybe you could hire one of Ben’s twins to help you with the ladder work on your rain shed.
Al, I am anxious how your big garden fares with the deer pressure. And the moose, those clumsy clods, they could walk thru a garden and destroy it!
Topic Suggestion: How we protect ourselves on the homestead
I'm thinking about concepts such as:
• firearms (do you carry a rifle or pistol when you're out on the homestead -- especially Al?)
• home/building security system solutions (Simply Safe, etc.)
• do you keep house doors, cars, buildings, equipment locked up when you're not using them?
• if you have children, how do you handle the topic of security when talking with your family?
Thank you for considering this. Inquiring minds.....

Our garden was a complete fail this year. What the moles didn't get from underground the grasshoppers got from above, then we had no bees this year.

Have a great rest of your vacation, Jason!
Jason I hope you are enjoying your time off it’s always good to getaway for a bit it’s like it re-energize you and Ben I was thinking when they hit that teenage years they eat a whole lot more and that meat freezer empty a lot faster but it’s all worth it
Really enjoyed yalls show.

I listen on Spotify but wanted to stop by and say how much I enjoy your chats ❤

Google about citrus peels being added to your garden. Not to the compost pile but thrown in raw all around your garden. Insects don't like the scent and are detered. Grapefruit, limes. Oranges and lemons.

Growing vegetables….look into planting veggies that do not have lectins in them…(skins and seeds) look toward healthier and therefor perhaps more profits.
