Not sure if it was noticed but the karate teacher did more for feminism than most movies meant to showcase female lead, she manages to get through the defences of the hero albeit briefly before being swatted away, she also has the courage to pursue a super villain and to finally free herself from a bind without having the need to yell for help from the protagonist. To me her actions silently conveyed how strong her character was and that true strength doesn't shout or need punch dialogue! Hope we get to see more such truly strong female characters!

I agree 100% to your evaluation of Tovino's role. He had a more difficult role to play than Guru Somasundaram's, and he nailed it. When Ayyappanum Koshiyum had released, people were all praise for Biju Menon's performance, but actually, Prithviraj had the tougher character to play, and he had really done a good job.

Would like to call your attention to something fun. Apart from everything else you mentioned, the movie also offers a million Easter eggs. From pop culture references like 'Dhakshayani biscuits' ( cue mohanlal's biscuit company in Midhunam) that jaison wins by throwing the ring at the village fair to sublte hints to Basil Joseph's own cinematic universe ( Desom, Salsa..) and pure homage to comic book culture by adding the comic book layout ( the school fight with policemen) and fresh takes on many superhero quirks like daddy issues, villain mannerisms and brilliant foreshadowings, the movie is a gem upon rewatching.
And my personal favourite- how he finally gave ode to the literary giant Basheer (pathummayude aadu reference) whom I have always suspected to be Basil's inspiration in creating the beautiful utopian interconnected villages in all his movies.
And to end with one sweet thing- The movie has not one person or prop out of place and each re-watch will yield something new. For instance, try and focus on the Village thief played by Azeez Nedumangaad who has his own sublte arc and camaraderie with the police so much so that he turns up in colour coded attire with them for the SI's daughter's wedding, though not forgetting he is still a thief (evident from his actions when the CI arrives).
Oh,I could go on and on😊
    Apologies,for the long rant.
Just thought many of the little malayali Easter eggs might have literally ( well, the banners and posters throughout the movie are in Malayalam) and figuratively lost in translation. And I feel you are someone who would be loving these little things😊

What about Cuticura powder? That orange tin reminded me the smell of that powder. We also got pespi, abibas. I was really hoping to see the brand 'pony' being used by the village photographer. Don't forget the 'Kindi, Kind'' reference either. Also, during the Kurakkanmoola School Anniversary celebrations, Josemon was dressed up as Shikhari Shambu, right?

I really liked the scene where Jaison gains telekinetic powers and Josemon says, "We too have that power", cuts to Biji, where she kicks open the water pipe and saves the day. Thus, breaking the stereotype that women aren't the 'superhero' type.

    Watched it on NF today.
    1. One of the best Indian films in 2021.
    2. Perfect casting.
    3. Writing is very cohesive.
    4. Visuals gel well with the milieu.
    5. Basil and Tovino are the next Martin Scorsese and Leonardo Decaprio of Malayalam respectively.
    6. Epic act and milestone performance of Guru Somasundaram.
    7. Enjoyed the serious comedy of the Cops unit - Baiju, Aju, and Rajesh.
    8. All lady actors - Shelly, Femina, Sneha did good
    9. Harishree Ashokan from comic to serious roles very convincing
Overall, missed the subtle actor Basil Joseph on screen. A good family entertainer...

I liked the fact that they didn't say much about the girlfriend. This took me directly into the hero's point of view where he's equally confused and not sure if he loves her. It is less cinematic where we need closure for everything and more realistic because we don't always get the closure we need. The flow felt very organic.
I agree with your point regarding the villain character. Even though I loved what I saw, I would like to see more about him.
May be I loved it a lot because this is my first Tovino THomas movie I watched.

    For all the Non Malayalis who haven't watched Basil's previous 2 films;
    1) All the three films happen in the same village ( which fans call Basil Cinematic Universe ) Kurukkanmoola and desham.
    2) Also Basil makes guest appearances as a politician in 2 of the films. Also there is mentioning of the villages in all the 3 films.
    3) Also slight fantasy is brought as common element to the village and weird nature of the people there is shown as well.

Malayalam cinema never disappoints! It was already an easy sale considering it's 1st mollywood superhero movie..and with Netflix 'indian superhero' movie would easily get bigger audience...bt the writing is really impressive...if this movie was made in Bollywood all the money would have been spent on VFX and they wouldn't have any money left to pay for the writer!

Actually the superhero in Minal Murali I liked the Veshti and Clothe masked faced. It’s better than the final body suit he wore. But the best part is the villan somasundram really nailed it. He shows his emotions very well throughout the film. Feel pity for him regardless of his shortcomings. The beauty of this film is that it never lost touch of South Indian cultural Essence and emotional connection with the audience. If this was modernised or western it would be boring as we already seen westernised superhero films. When the kid said, we need a hero for India the audience were helming for the same thing.

This movie was a blast. It went beyond my expectations in certain places. It broke them in certain places(in a good way). As someone who has seen every single Marvel and DC movie that has been released so far, let me tell you, Basil Joseph and Co has given me everything that I look for in a Superhero Movie and more. The CGI is not upto par with Marvel or DC, of-course, but this movie has it's heart in the right place. Forget the Superhero stuff, the build up to all that Superhero stuff is what I enjoyed the most!!
This movie got me, right in the feels. I teared up twice. Once for Jaison. Once for Shibu. They don't make movies often, where a part of you roots for the villain.
Also, here is an entire paragraph dedicated to Brucelee Biji. The unsung hero of this movie. She is definitely a Superhero in my book!

What most of the non native watchers of this movie misses are the references to the Basil Joseph Film Universe™. The Bus that is saved by Minnal Murali was going to "Deshom" a village where Kunjiramayanam film was set in. In Kunjiramayanam, there is a reference to Kurukkan moola[1]. The bus was going to Desom through(via) Kannadikal which is the place where Godha is set in. All these films reference the places each other. During a minnal murali scene in tea shop you can see one of the flex from Godha sitting outside the shop(seen through a window). Probably Minnal Murali sequel will happen outside Kurukkanmoola anywhere in the other parts of Basil's film universe.

Liked the movie. But slow at start but as the scenes moves it brings brings to the fore the emotions of the son for his father and to the tragic situation where a girl and daughter needs support and the heros plunge to save all arround the village. Tovino has clicked.

    Hi Mr. Baradwaj Rangan 😊
i use to read your movie reviews in newspaper during my school days. i only understood 10% of it and i use to criticize you for criticizing malayalam movies of our mallu stars then. why is this man so negative? , why cant he write in simple language? so that i too can understand😁.
anyway . after .. maybe a 15 years now i saw this review and am so happy that i understand your english 😁. (may be.. social Media had influenced you to make it simple so that you get vast audience). and also about Minnal Murali. i understood you 100% and i too have the same opinions.
may be you must have turned a little positive 😁 or may be because our malayalam industry have grown in betterway to make better movies. so Happy 😍

But I feel like he tries to pull down the film before compliments. That some how points his attitude towards Malayalam films. He has that heart which Is not ready to accept whole heartily that yes Malayalam films are better and good. Idont udestabd why he tells the whole story . I just paused the video the moment I got to know that he is going to start explaining the story

Good movie unlike other heroine eye candy movie and love begging hero movie. Both hero and heroine having work to do in this movie which is breathingspace for audiencefrom stupid regular romantic scenes. So entertaining movie.
Over all super movie. Only one thing is people should have ounce of mindset super hero also can come from south India.

The bus saving scene as well as the dialogue delivery in a scene when the villain smashes the hero's face against the grill rod in the climax fight sequence disappointed me too. Other things could be neglected considering the budget they worked with.

It's funny how your colleague Sucharita Tyagi from Film Companion North a complete opposite review for this same movie which she's facing a backlash which is quite obvious from all the comments below her review. I know everyone has their own opinion about every movie but generally it wouldn't be too far off compared to what the audience and movie critics think. It seems like she gave a bad review and mocking the movie as a publicity stunt.
