    You will definitely have sedum to sell next year. The one I propagated last year are blooming and 50-60 inches tall right now and it was only small 1 inch cuttings.

    I think having your son make his own tray of cuttings is absolutely brilliant! What a great way to have the kids invested in your business - literally, invested! I've got my grandkids nearby and they think of my garden as their private food forage place - which I love. ☺ But I'm trying to think of ways to pull them in to the idea of selling plants. I will be giving them trays to propagate, thanks for the great parenting tip! 💞

    HI Craig and Casey, I've been watching your videos from Australia for some time and never cease to be inspired and encouraged by your family. My hubby and I are working through your old videos together to build our own nursery. He is currently working in property maintenance and like you we would love to work together on a family business. Just last week he built me a propagation misting system for my birthday 🙂, that's all I wanted, something to make this nursery happen a little bit faster. I'm so grateful for your time and for sharing with us all that you are learning. ???????????? One question that we would love to know is about how you plan your calendar. We are in the southern hemisphere so it would be inverted, but I think we are in a similar zone. Knowing things like when you take cuttings, to when you plan to pot up starts, budgeting and ordering, watering, building shade houses and irrigation etc, potting up orders and finding time to plan, film and edit videos etc. would be great. Do you have a written plan? How do you keep on top of things like fertilizing on time and making sure you don't run out of potting soil. All the things that alone sound simple but if you miss any of the moving parts would drastically impact your business. I'm sure some things have to fit in and around your regular schedule, like if you need new irrigation because you are expanding. But I am guessing that you have an annual calendar of some sort so you can plan those projects around it. I have noticed that your nursery looks very neat and organised, which is no doubt a testament to your families ability to manage your time and the overall project of running a nursery. Thanks for blessing us with your encouragement and great informative content here on TH-cam

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't really keep a calendar, though it seems to be becoming more necessary as we get bigger. I just do what I need to when I need to, always looking a week, month, and a year ahead. But... there are downsides to NOT being a bit more organized.

      @savvydirtfarmer You must have 'grown' a very good sense for knowing or seeing what needs to happen next.... and I've come to realise plants do talk to us. They become like children in that they share their needs, and we do our best to meet them. Your consistency and attention to detail are impressive. In my mind, it's a reflection of Gods character. You truly value and care for your family.

    I’m with you…some plants going into this business are years in preparation and others can be ready in the same year if given the right conditions. Our game plan is go with what we have as we have it available and then bring in plugs, etc. as we see a need or interest. Anyone doing this for the money is probably going to miss out on the joys of nurturing plants to the point where they bring happiness to others. Another thing is developing varieties that are well acclimated to the location of your nursery (or theirs). This is especially important for those selling garden plants. We’ll make money regardless; the extra effort is in blessing our customers and clients. Great job, Craig!

    Another tip. Vitex (agnus castus) is a large shrub, slow starter in spring but then they just explode. Almost as easy as willow to propagate. I’ve started them from seed an third season you have a 3 feet flowering bush. And that’s from seed!

    • @wingabouts
      @wingabouts ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vitex is a wonderful plant. It is a shrub, but I pruned mine to look like a small dogwood tree. It is drop dead gorgeous in bloom, but the structure is quite beautiful even in winter with no leaves.

Then I bought a new property with good land and I created a bigger garden. I started propagating my own plants. Learning from watching videos online. I was thrilled to see the Mariesii!! This is one of my favorites, the layering of the blooms along the top and the corrugated leaves (that's where the word plicatum comes in to play) hanging below is striking. Then the leaves turn colors in the fall as well. I think it's a relatively unknown, uncommon specimen and folks don't always know what they're looking at, they're used to the usual suspects. But show them a picture of it in all its glory and they'll give it a try.

    I was so surprised to hear you say you'd consider leaving your son's spireas in the plug tray over winter. This is my first year trying to sell plants and one of my to-do's I thought would be to get all the babies into bigger pots before the cold hits. I thought it would sort of insulate the roots better and keep them from being killed off by a hard freeze. I'm in zone 8a, so nothing too severe, but I really did think I had to up-size my baby plants before winter. Have you had plug trays do ok in winter? Does it matter what kind of plant it is? Thanks again for your videos. I've got a really good thing started here because of you and your family. 💖

      We overwinter tons of plants in their trays, out in the open weather every year. Usually with great success. Last year we lost a bunch but had a very rare extraordinarily cold spell, followed by a VERY warm February when everything woke up, then a very cold march. I will be covering more plants this winter, but it's not necessary.

    I have a real problem. I haven't planned on having a nursery but I do love growing and propagating plants. When I prune plants, I hate throwing away the cuttings, whether tree cuttings or suckers from my tomato plants. I get tomato plants that are several years old from growing suckers and then suckers from the suckers. Almost everything gets rooted and grows. Eventually, every year, it's all so overwhelming that I just have to start tossing plants. Maybe a nursery is the answer.
