As a full-fledged Vietnamese, I can say that to each of their own but once you got used to the smell, it tasted very unique and sweet. I guess it tasted good if you lived in a humid weather place like Vietnam or Florida.

They cost like 10 bucks a piece, people say is good for cancer so maybe that is why they cost a few dollars and also they are not so common around as other fruits. I have a tree in the yard but the birds eat most of them lol.

I've tried Durian - it tastes EXACTLY like carmelized onions blended into a creamy custard. Honestly not bad - I see how it could grow on people.

It smells so good to me since I was a young child.
To me it smells like rotting banana peels, however, once you take a bite or two, the smell becomes tolerable. I love the way it taste so am ok with the smell. I just didn't grow up with it. I'm sure if I had I would be ok with the smell since I'd be eating it a lot more. For me now, when I get it, it's a treat for me.

Well, I am not surprised if he reacted like that, that is normal to react like that when you smell something that sharp for the first time. For asians, we have been introduced with durian since we were really young. Which makes us have that different reaction.
