    I've used the RPG while in the army and want to add just two things:
    You hold the launcher the other way around, with your left hand close to you and your right on the trigger. Its much more comfortable and stable this way.
    The other peculiar thing is that when you shoot in a windy weather the rocked doesn't overshoots in the direction of the wind the way it is with bullets but opposite the wind direction.
    Example, wind blows from left to right, to hit a target with a rifle you shoot a little bit to the left of it and the bullet drags to the right and hits it. With the RPG you shoot on the right side of the target because the wind pushes the tail fins of the rocket and makes its trajectory to curve to the left.

      @@mrkeogh, definitely the fins. I was told that by russian specialist. IIRC, his exact words were: "Fins are far back, side wind pressure has a lot of lever, turning the grenade around jet force application point. So the nose goes against the wind."
      Term "grenade" is what he used instead of "rocket" - professional slang, not a mistake.

      Years ago the Discovery Channel had a TV program where an RPG-7 was fired at a facility way out in the desert . . . it was at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, with its research branch dealing with explosives. Doing the RPG-7 launch, it was conducted with a level of safety as one would see with a rocket launch. The RPG was affixed in a static location, the personnel was at some distance away in a bunker, and the RPG was launched via remote control. The host of the DC program expressed disappointment that he could not physically hold and fire the RGP-7.

    Greet review, thank you!
    I spend 1 year in the Hungarian army in 1983 in a mobilised infantry battalion. Although my main military training was machine gunner (PKM, KGKT and KPVT 14.5 mm machine guns) we were trained to use all of the infantry weapons included the RPG-7.
    I you dont mind I would have some reflections.
    First the trigger grip in front of the other grip is for purpose. You dont pull the triger with your left index finger but with the right. Your left hand holds the second grip like a pistol, pointing backwards. You cross and push the wrists together increasing the stability. I dont know if it makes any sense but try it.
    The rubber pad is just for the correct eye distance, not protecting the eyebrow because - as you mentioned correctly - the weapon is recoilles. I shoot with Dragunov without rubber pad and I cut my eyebrow badly.
    Because the weapon is recoilles, shotting is amazing. The rocket speed is about 90 m/s and you see it flying. The blast is enormous, we didnt have any ear protection we wore tanker helmet because of their ear pads on the shooting range.
    We used to run out batteries of the scope also, we used to use them in our transistor radios (Of course it was forbidden). We mixed fluorescent dollop in a matchbox, took the match, covered the iron sight with it, shaped with a razor blade and it was pretty good in the night range.
    I think there was also HE rocket, quite effective again bunkers and machine gun position, but I never used.
    We were showed a Soviet traning film about a T-55 tank hit by RPG-7. The inner comparment was quite nasty.
    The sidearm of the RPG gunner was the PA-63 pistol. One of the grunts next to the gunner carried extra rockets and aided him.
    Once again, great review, keep up the good work!

      Cool.
      I do find it interesting, how the US and Soviet Union went with vastly different ideologies for Anti-Tank weapons during the Cold War. With the Soviet Union using a multiple use launcher, able to hold and fire rounds repeatedly, while the US went with the disposable style, like the PanzerFaust, such as with the M72 LAW, later replaced by the AT4. And even today, with the Javelin Missile system, having disposable missile tubes.
      Kind of an interesting dynamic, considering the US military first used the Bazooka, which isn't that different from the RPG-7.

      Building a thermonuclear warhead is a hell of a lot harder than that and requires materials that are closely monitored which you are either going to have to steal from existing nuclear stockpiles (usually guarded by guys with guns) or refine yourself from monitored materials (uranium ores) using machines that are very expensive and closely monitored (centrifuges like those in Iran). Tritium will probably be the easiest material to get for your warhead but you will probably end up on multiple watch lists if you are buying it in the quantities that you would need. You will also need access to very precise machining equipment as being imprecise will cause your warhead to fizzle. Once you get the materials and the workshop equipment provided, actually making the warhead wouldn't be too hard and there are numerous scientific papers that will help you out - accessing those will probably set of massive warning bells at numerous TLA agencies and visits from them if they make the connection with your acquisition of materials.

      Yes, all our mums in their childhood were putting their crush's names in hearts on one page in their diary, and listing the weaponry their children might be using on another.
      You know, I think that might have been a good Monty Python sketch! I can already imagine Graham Chapman dressing in drag telling a 1970s kid portraying his/her son to go wash his hands because the dirty commies might be coming any moment, you don't want to get dirt all over the SKS-45 that he/she bought him for his birthday! Then perhaps mutter "Kids these days... making a mess of the place, NEVER putting their kalashnikov back in their toy box after playing with it, ohhhh look at the state of this room, like Charlton Heston's bleeding shed!" meanwhile there's firearms strewn about the place like a child's play room is filled with toys.
      Heh, shed, remember Two Sheds? He was a funny guy...

    Used them in Southern Africa early 80s, the warhead doesn’t just explode when the safety cap is removed, it gets activated when the rocket takes over out of the tube at 20 to 30 metres or so. If you hit anything closer than that it will go through but not explode if it’s a Russian made. But there are copies made in other countries that might have left that feature out.

      @@bloqk16 I don't know about "urban legend", but while ammunition now is far more reliable than the early stuff, it still ages, and while quality control is infinitely better that even 60 years ago, stupid quality control mistakes still happen. When I was getting out of the USMC in early 1990, there was an accident on one of the M203 live-fire ranges aboard Camp Pendleton, where a live HE round detonated in the chamber when the shooter fired. The blast was technically a misfire, but it blew the shooter's left arm off at the elbow (which is the main reason why modern 203 shooters hold the M16/M4 magazine, instead of a forward, "rifle-like" grip), killed the range coach to his left (whose face was directly in front of the chamber), and seriously wounded the range coach at the firing station to his right, who suffered several broken ribs and damaged disks from hydro-static shock (we only had no-plate PASGT armor in those days) in addition to light shrapnel injuries.

      From what I've seen in Soviet training videos and the like, a rocket isn't typically loaded in the breech when moving, unless the weapon has already been drawn. I.E. When the weapon is on the back, the launcher *shouldn't* be loaded. I've personally never heard of someone killing themselves with a PG7 rocket or anything, and from my understanding, while it *is* an impact grenade, it isn't armed until the initial booster is detonated. I was a soldier myself so...maybe it was a tall tale? Maybe it wasn't and someone blew themselves up real good. I don't know. Soldiers like to bullshit.

    nice demo. i spent time in af eod and 2 yrs in iraq. these were really simple, accurate, and could really do some damage. only thing i could add is that the fuse behind the warhead also has a rotor which is released upon launch setback and by 10 meters rotates and lines up the electrical circuit from the nose mounted piezoelectric crystal, also lines up the impact and fires the self destruct fuse trains inside the fuse. there are tail fins, they are inside the center of the launch motor propellant pack and open up once they clear the tube. many of our guys were saved by these fins snagging something, like power lines, which typically sent the rocket ricocheting wildly. we actually had one guy's helmet hit by the fins as the rocket whizzed by. another piece of trivia, the nose cone has inner and outer parts made of aluminum which are seperated by an airspace. if you see a severely dented warhead, the nose piezoelectric fuse may be shorted, so the impact will have to initiate. also, make sure your launch propellant is not cracked(it will be pretty clearly cracked and broken looking) because it will explode in the tube. you won't survive. cheers.

This is a destructive device, and they are highly regulated by BATFE, so any civilian in possession of an un registered device such as this would be arrested for possession of a destructive device and that is a ticket to Federal prison for a decade or more per count and that isn't to mention the fines. Wonder no more. There you go - if you want the specifics visit the BATFE website and look under the category of destructive device regulations.

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +SimmoAusful Well if it is a properly made Russian spec round you would be okay. There is a spring loaded safety slider at the piece electric pathway AKA the arming circuit is not closed before launch. The warhead is actually electronically detonated, since due to the hollow charge it is base ignited. The impact of the initial launch kicks a firing pin of a pyrotechnic safety inside the warhead. This starts the time safety self-destruct mentioned in the video. But is also arms the round. There is pyrotechnic delay block holding back the spring loaded slider. Literally a block of pyrotechnic material is blocking the sliders path and prevents it from moving. Once the pyrotechnic burns of the slider is pushed by the spring and closes the electric firing circuit.
      Then again it is hard to know, what would happen since RPG-7 has been copied couple dozen times by different countries and all rounds are not to the exact original spec. So you probably can find a cheap copy cat round, which has decided to omit the rather crucial safety feature for cheaper manufacturing. Also since it is spring and pyrotechnic based system really old rounds probably have dead springs or unstable pyrotechnics and hence are dangerous.
      it is probably US military policy to put the safety caps on, because they have no way to know what exact rounds locals are using and how much beyond known good date those rounds are.

    • @AHalz
      @AHalz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      That is correct. There are safety mechanisms in place that will prevent the rocket from detonating under a certain distance. Iraq had massive stockpiles of RPGs but most of them were extremely old and probably unsafe to use.
      Saddam Hussein was probably the worst military general in modern history...his ego and pride took over common sense what it came to prepping Iraq's military against the US invasion. An Iraqi general told Saddam that the Iraqis could not fight the US head on and instead it should devote its meager sources using asymmetric means. Saddam disagreed and kept spending money on attempting to upgrade his radar stations, tanks, artillery, etc. Had Saddam listened to his general, he could have bought massive numbers of updated RPG-7's, RPG-29s, anti tank guided missiles, etc. from various Eastern European countries. Saddam's idiocy saved the lives of many, many US soldiers who found themselves facing a nasty insurgency using leftover weapons from the 80s. It would be horrible to think what could have happened if those insurgents had access to much more sophisticated tech...

    • @AHalz
      @AHalz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      To be fair, the ammunition the Iraqis were using for their T-72's were shit. The Russians did not sell them good tank ammunition because they did not trust Saddam. However, you make an excellent point about the cost of a T-72 versus an RPG-29. Saddam could have bought thousands of RPG-29 launchers and tens of thousands of rounds. He didn't because he was an idiot.

    • @AHalz
      @AHalz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, exactly! And an M60T has much heavier armor than most of our AFVs (with the exception of the M1, but even those don't fare too well against Kornets). It would have been tough for the US to enter into places like Fallujah or Ramadi had the insurgents had Kornets and RPG-29s..

All HE munitions ever made have a delay mechanism in place, a simple pyro fuse. Been like that for over 100 years. Even 3rd party made ones physically CAN NOT work any other way.
      The amount of acceleration upon firing varies from several hundred to several thousand G's, depending on the weapon. Orders of magnitude above what you could get from dropping it or bumping it into things.
      The guy is clueless not only about weapons but middle school physics as well.

    One of these is what shot me out of the air. I was a door gunner in a HUEY HU1 C. In the Ia Drang battle in Nov. 19965. I did ok the 1st couple of days, but on the 3rd, we were on our way back for water and ammo. We were up about 20/30 feet or so when I saw this spinning rocket headed straight for my ship. I shouted through my headset to the pilot, "IN_Comming!" He banked to the right and hard up. The damn rocket went straight into the tail rotor and blew it off the ship's structure. The ship started spinning, and I was thrown out the door. It hurt like hell when I hit the ground. After about 3 - 4 hours, a duster hovered over and picked me up. I have to say, I was happy as hell to see this duster drop-down and pick me up. The Ia Drang battle was with about 2000 NVA combatants; we had about 400 or so, combat troops.

    Back in the 80's in the South African Army, we'd captured enough of those things that every infantry section (10 men) was issued with one.
    Not surprisingly the RPG man had to carry it as well as a rifle. His second carried an extra two or three rockets. No optical sights, just the irons.
    Also had one m79 in the section that was carried as well as athe primary rifle. The Grenadier used to have a bandolier of 6 HE rounds IIRC.

These RPG-7s and other variants are so abundant & easy to use, you really have to tip your hat at the Soviet era Russians for making sturdy, effective, easy to use and above all reliable weaponry, their ability in doing this and more didn't start and end with the AK-47 like many would believe.
