The reason a lot of the retro Disney games were so brutal was because Disney was fighting against the rental market dominated by Blockbuster and Hollywood Videos at the time - they didn’t want kids to rent their games then return them after they were done, so they mandated games have spiked difficulty in the hopes kids would just outright buy copies of it in frustration

Disney was smart for making games brutal at the time.
Games lacked storage to be 100+ hours long at the time, so the best way for games to get bought, not just rented was to make games brutally difficult till kids would spend hundreds of hours worth of trial and error until they finally do it.
It was what made Castlevania, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, ect so popular.

@MrAjking808 That how it was back then. The North American versions of games were always harder than the Japanese versions because Japan made renting software illegal so publishers didn't need to worry about kids beating it over a weekend and returning it.

I finished Jak 2 for the first time recently. If I'm not mistaken, you are talking about the dock mission where you have to escape from the guards. All I did was get on the floating board and move around them to escape. It took me a few tries but it's doable. As a kid I never finished Jak 2 because it seemed really hard to me. After finishing it recently, I realized some missions are harder than some, but they are doable. Now that I am older, playing it again and completing it this time is probably because it seems like the older you get, the easier you pick up on how to beat games.

One of the most surprisingly difficult games for me was Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Certain sections like the War chapter with the Tediz and the lava boarding section took me ages to beat my first time playing. It sometimes felt like you could start it on New Year’s Day and not beat it until Christmas.

Dead Rising is a rogue-lite. It's normal not to be able to finish the scenario in one attempt. The story is re-told at a more advanced level. But above all, with a deeper understanding of travel times, weapon locations and specific uses in a given situation.
In Dark Souls, the difficulty comes mainly from the need to learn how to dance with bosses and plan your build. This requires hands-on learning and an interest in lore (and a bit of community sharing).
Dead Rising is quite similar: at the start, you're oblivious to the ubiquitous aids and shortcuts, you rush headlong, you arrive late, NPCs die and take their rewards with them, and you get beaten up by bosses. But through exploration, learning and optimization, we free up time and adapt our equipment. The game remains unforgiving, but it's much easier to navigate, so you can have fun or prepare yourself.
It's a sandbox game, with hundreds of interactions and ways to achieve your goals. There are many ways to regulate difficulty or abuse the game. It all depends on your ingenuity. Look at the dinginess of BOTW players with a physics engine.

When it comes to Jak 2, the second Baron Praxis fight and that sewer mission with the three guys is brutal. I don't find most of Mario Sunshine too difficult but definitely agree some of the Sprites are unforgiving. FLUDD-less levels can be excruciating due to how wonky the physics are, the volcano level has no room for error, and the pachinko game is downright broken. As for Kingdom Hearts, the amount of times I had to watch that cutscene before the second Riku fight...

Gradius for the NES is one of the hardest games ever made. I went on a quest to 100% every NES game and this one stopped my run. I was beating sports games on the hardest difficulties, platformers, etc…but Gradius was impossible. Put well over 100 hours in to it (a game that takes 30 minutes to beat) and I couldn’t do it. I always died and lost my power ups on stage 5, and that far in the game once you die once is basically over because you lose all your power ups. I only made it to stage 6 with all my powerups once, but I died before I beat the stage. I still had stage 7, which I never did get to see.
There’s almost no information on the internet with how difficult this game is. That just goes to show that few people have actually tried to beat it. The hardest part is that the more you upgrade your ship, the more aggressive and difficult the enemies get (and the more health they have), so it’s about finding the balance of only having a few upgrades so you don’t beef up the enemies too much. But I was never able to beat it. Stage 5 was too tough. And that’s if you can get past the insanely hard stage 3, which is like a 30% chance, even with tons of training.

To be honest I noticed that roguelike/lite games are always harder than expected and I say that in a good way, it is a different approach on video game difficulty that really works greatly in my opinion. Funny thing about the Dead Rising convicts, I used to hate having to go outside when I played it as a kid in 2007 because I thought they were so hard. Replaying it now though, they're rarely a threat. NFS Underground rubber-band is brutal. Also another factor to such a difficulty is just how lightweight cars are, one mistake and you done. Underground 2 is more managable as car crashes aren't as damaging. Except URL races, they can be as brutal as first game. Also Hot Pursuit 2 PS2 version is even more exhausting as it has the same AI that if more than 3 secs gap you can restart the whole race and these races usually lasts more than 10 minutes and some of them can be almost half an hour.

Minecraft Dungeons is a game I thought would be a shut your brain off kill everything on screen situation, just because it presents itself as a very basic kid friendly colourful ARPG. I was so wrong though, some of those bosses (even on default difficulty) will game over you quickly. Once you get to Apocalypse Difficulty (around 9+), you better be running top tier Unique Gilded in every slot with damage reduction & numerous BIS Artefacts equipped as well as swap between on the fly, or you're getting crushed within seconds (or even 1 shot). You have to be running the most OP/efficient/optimal enchants on all your armour/weaponry too if you're planning on surviving Apocalypse difficulty (E.G. Radiance is a MUST on every melee weapon for me).
I thought it would be a cake walk after playing ARPG's like PoE, it's definitely not a cake walk. The tutorial & first few levels lower your guard for what's to come.

The OG kh1 on ps2 is a hard game, while the remasters are challenging they added a lot of quality of life things.. Like being able to skip cutscenes.

Imagine getting some of these for Christmas. I still can't beat Diddy Kong Racing as an adult. I beat NFS Underground 1 & 2 but they were on easy mode, even then the first one was frustrating as heck. Btw, people weren't lying about Lion King. I had the Mega Drive version and it takes a bit of effort to say the least.
Edit: If I had to add my own to the list of surprisingly difficult games it would be Ecco the Dolphin and the first Earthworm Jim.

Kingdom Hearts was hard af. I remember being stuck on that second Riku fight for days. Once I got passed that I soared through the game. Other than fighting Sephiroth. Screw him in KH1. I had a guide, only reason I knew where to go but if I didn't have a guide, yeah; I'd of been lost.

Jak 2 isnt just the hardest game in the series, its the game that feels the most...alive? It feels like a lived in world. I loved Jak and Daxter and Jak 3, but Jak 2 is still my favorite game. Even over Super Mario World. Even over Dark Souls. Even over any Zelda you could name(personally id say A Link to the Past but ya know, Ocarina and Breath). Its just an amazing game that i have never "grown" out of, and i dont feel the same about J&D and Jak 3.

Jedi Fallen Order was harder because, despite releasing what like 5 years after Dark Souls 3, DS3 was a more polished and fluid game. Sekiro was a great difficult game. Jedi fallen order was an okay game, but the difficulty wasn't deliberate

When I was younger I never played the original Dead Rising, I only played 2 when it came out and as a side note, I think 2 is the best one (haven’t played 4 yet though from what I hear I’m not missing much). 2 is just so nostalgic for me and it is a somewhat challenging game at times but it’s also very fun and totally doable without ripping your hair out. But last year I went back and played the original Dead Rising and yeah, I feel the same way. Sure for the time it’s game mechanics were pretty normal, but going back to play it for the first time now is absolutely brutal. Hour after hour I kept wanting to rip my hair out from the difficulty. I actually made it past those stupid guys in the truck, I beat the sniper boss and grocery store. But when I got to the bitch on the bike I was on that shit for HOURS and I just gave up. I was just saying to myself I’d rather be playing 2 right now! And that’s exactly what I did! Swap to 2 because 1 while it is a fun game to explore and see how the franchise started, it’s a brutal game. Maybe I suck too but yeah, I agree.
Here’s a title I played recently that I’ll mention here. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. It was a 360 arcade only game in the like of Deadops arcade from BO1, except it was in the realm of Ghostbusters. Granted, the game is meant to be played co-op with 3 other live humans but I have to play with the NPCs because the game doesn’t go online anymore. In general I think this game sucks and the entire time I played it I was thinking I’d rather pop in BO1 and play Deadops because Sanctum really is the inferior version of that. There are only 12 levels, and when the game starts off it’s pretty chill and fun I might add. By stage 6 or 7 that’s when the difficulty starts to ramp up and the NPCs can no longer keep up. By stage 10 the game just became so brutally difficult that I spent hours on that 1 stage before giving up. I’m a huge ghostbusters fan, but this easily was the worst one I’ve ever played. I’m sure if I was able to have real teammates I could beat the game but as it stands playing it in 2024 yeah the game is just brutal by the last 2 stages.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Some of the Mario Sunshine Fludd-less levels were way too hard, but for me the Red Coin lily pad ride was the worst...I think it's the only level I never completed. One game that was ostensibly for kids but wayyy to difficult was Batman & Robin on Sega Genesis...I've seen "hardest game" lists that put it below Contra Hard Corps, and I find it hard to believe. With a little practice I was able to beat Hard Corps without much issue, but I've never made it past the 2nd level of Batman & Robin.

I’m pretty sure Toy Story on SNES has more gameplay problems in general on top of the difficulty. The Genesis version is the more polished experience if you had to play any versions of these games. It doesn’t change the fact it’s hard across the board, but at least it spare you from hit detection or weirder gameplay issues. Back in the day any Disney tie ins had a reputation for being harder than they should. But I have to wonder why Lion King is even on the thumbnail if that hasn’t been played? I was looking forward to how you felt about the difficulty. Though I’m sure it would be what everyone else would say about it.

    • @MrGamer07100
      @MrGamer07100 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@darthvaderbn If you like side scrolling action platformers yes. Depends on your difficulty tastes. It’s not particularly a bad game, just not well liked because of its difficulty. And the Toy Story 2 video game have since overshadowed it even further. To me it’s worth it if you can deal with the challenge, and how much you like the film. Assuming you never played it ever.

I never got past the final level on normal/advanced mode in the first monkey ball game and was never able to get past the 3rd level on hard/expert mode so I got rid of that game long ago. The second monkey ball game had more to choose from so I held on to that game but never finished storymode and had not played that game since New Year's Day of 2007. I also never finished Super Mario Sunshine. Because I was never able to find out where you are supposed to go to get to the final boss meaning I never even made it to the chucksters. Other surprisingly difficult games you forgot to mention are Donkey Kong 64 because of too many collectables, Turock for N64, and the first 2 Zelda games ever made, the ones for the NES. I finished the first one 10 months ago but was still never able to finish the second to this day.
