    a friend of mine grew up in a cult, she would frequently get nightmares about the end of the world.
    her parents and the cult leaders thought she was a prophet, and that the nightmares were a premonition.
    she got away from them and we met in college. now she has a degree and is in a loving relationship with another friend of mine and they have an adorable dog.

    Grew up in one. Moved to the town when i was 5, Escaped when i was 13. It was the worst, most traumatic time of my life and honestly sucks to talk about but I’m actually processing the severe trauma from that time with help from therapists and a support group i’m in

    Having things like deaf schools are good for kids who have the disability who might not do well in a regular school, and sign language clubs and classes can be a good learning experience. It's also nice to have a group of friends who understand what you're going through. But when that becomes your whole life, it can destroy your life. That one thing should NOT define you.

    • @khaleesireyna731

      I agree on that point. It sounds like that commenter was deaf/hard of hearing themselves, so they may see a side of the deaf community that others don't often see. But I don't think I can agree with the idea of the deaf community itself being a cult. I'm not deaf, but I have friends who are and I took ASL in college for a year (my professor was also deaf). In my classes, we also learned a lot about deaf culture and, from my understanding, deaf culture sprung from the fact that we as a society typically communicate through speech. Deaf people obviously are isolated from that, so the culture springs around the need to utilize and build a different method of communication. Things like deaf schools and deaf community events are also by-products of the fact that we live in a very ableist society, so the deaf community carved out a space for themselves in response. I've gone to numerous deaf events, and no one there ever looks down on or is hostile toward those who can hear.

    The deaf cult thing immediately made me think of Connie from The Walking Dead... because she actually tried to communicate with people who don’t sign in a way they’d all understand. She still has the “being deaf is a superpower” thing, but she doesn’t shove it in people’s faces.

    • @khaleesireyna731
      @khaleesireyna731 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Maybe I'm biased (I'm not deaf, but I have friends who are and studied ASL for 1 year, and my professor was also deaf), but I don't agree with that commenter.
      Deaf culture stems from several factors that often isolate (often unintentionally) deaf people from hearing people: 1) only about 10% of deaf/hard of hearing people have parents/siblings who are also deaf. So, even in families where the deaf person is fully supported and the family all sign fluently, there can still be communication barriers because the other family members may still speak to one another without signing at times. 2) because of the point listed in #1, many deaf people find community with other deaf people outside of their families (often from a young age), so the closeness/understanding comes from that. 3) deaf people have had to fight hard for things like being allowed to drive and have had to prove repeatedly that they are fully functional in spite of being deaf. That can also lead to a more closely-knit community.
      Overall, I, as a hearing person, have joined in at deaf community events (they're usually open to anyone. You don't have to be deaf to join in). Almost everyone I've ever signed with has been patient and enthusiastically helped me learn more signing (so lacking the isolation that many cults use as a tactic. The isolation deaf people often experience comes more from not being able to hear/communicate the way hearing people do). The separation with things like Galladeah (sp?) University come more from the deaf community carving out a space for themselves in an overall ablist world.
      I've seen too many people who have deaf/hoh family members outright refuse to learn any sign language or deride the language itself (and seen people defend that viewpoint), so I really can't agree with the idea that a community that formed from the need for connection and communication/understanding due to disability is a cult.
      How any disabled person views their disability and lives their life is completely up to them. If the OC got a cochlear implant to hear, they shouldn't be shamed for it by other deaf people for that choice. If another deaf person is unable or unwilling to get something like that, that is fine and their choice as well. There might be some separation there, but I can't agree and say it's a cult. Bit of a ramble, but that's my view on it. My opinion really doesn't matter on that one, since I am not deaf, so I don't know that struggle, but there it is.

    Common trend in some of these cults is not allowing the kids to pursue any kind of education: because having these kids go off and learn to questions things on their own is a big no-no, right?
    Also depressing how so many of these seem to be just an excuse for some people to indulge in very un-Christian behaviour.

    • @Badartist888
      @Badartist888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah. So many know by slapping a "Christian" label on themselves the majority of Christians act as a passive shield. It makes you realise how the Islamic cults can operate in places where most of the Muslims are good people.

    As someone into kink and BDSM, there are some serious cult like activities in it. Often more cult of personality and individuals/ small groups. However there are larger groups that have cult leader types among them (often you work it out when people call them out for 'consent violations' and that group all backs the charismatic person.).
    I think a large part of that is many Doms have a cult leader type personality (it is a thrill to have someone give you 24/7 TPE type power, to put it mildly) and that many many subs are looking more for someone to just control their life. And the sexual part is how they 'pay' to have a stronger personality control them.

    21:00 Yes AA is a cult. It was based on religious methods and never has changed since it started. Very much about tea-totalling and being dependent on the group. The newer groups that are based on modern psychiatric techniques are about finding what causes your addiction and helping you come to terms with that. After which, people can drink (or even do drugs or whatever their addiction was) but not have that same addiction to it.
    Basically AA isn't as all addictions are based on existing mental problems (often shame is a big one when it comes to spiraling deeper, also blotting out memories or thoughts rather than coming to terms with them).

    theres actually a reason the deaf culture is the way it is, very sad actually
    but there was this conference in 1800s Milan attended by 250 important peoples that were to decide between 2 types of ways of communication for the deaf community. Out of the 250 attendees only 1 was actually deaf!
    so as you can guess the actually banned sign language and forced them to do lip reading only and would actually punish the poor deaf community so that is why old scool deaf people especially are so against it.
    not their faults but decided by a bunch of buttholes that think they know better but they werent even deaf (well except for the one token deaf guy, im sure they heard him very well over the 249 guests when they didnt have speakers or microphones or anything)

    I didn’t know that about the deaf community, but I can see it. I had this toxic roommate who made everything about her disability and spoke some ASL, I went to an exhibit with these gloves that would translate ASL in real time, and her first comment was how that was taking away deaf culture. Like, maybe some people want to be able to communicate more directly and have independence? BTW I’m disabled too, we should be able to talk about it without it taking over our entire identities

      That's because those gloves have been invented and reinvented a million times and they'll never really work. ASL has a totally different structure to spoken and written languages, and relies on more than hand movements to communicate meaning (eg mouthing, facial expressions, size and length of signs, etc.) It's literally less useful than writing down stuff on a notepad.

    The AA thing is something my dad has a theory behind.
    Now he had to go into recovery after being a drunk since he was 14 and he got sober by 26.
    He said that the very religious or as he said sterner AA meetings were ones run through the churches.
    The one he joined was through a non profit organization that is still around today.

    I honestly prefer my cult, tarot than religion anytime. Being catholic, raised in a spanish family was extreme.
    Been years since I went to church, no offense but I noticed most religious people are kinda meaner than the non religious ones due to them trying to not releasing normal human emotion like anger or lust because it is forbidden in the bible. I am not religious, I left church since 2015. Being there gave me also trouble, attract a lot of attention, was being referred to an unknown man at a young age in short being sold to without knowing. That is why I left. Made the right choice.
