You forgot to mention her idle animation. She smiles and rocks her head back and forth to suggest she's a kind innocent and even caring person while simultaneously clenching and shaking her fist at her side as if she's concealing an aggressive and violent impulse.
@druggyisaiah3125 That's the type of Comically Sadistic & Violent Attention-to-Detail that would make Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Art Davis, Bob McKimson, Frank Tashlin and William Hanna & Joseph Barbera all SO Proud!
Another bonus to BB's design, is that she could represent the deceptiveness of fairy tales. Cute and intriguing on the surface but horrifying underneath. Original fairy tales are rather brutal.
"Because fighting games don't often have good stories, it's up to the characters to convey everything about themselves and the world to the player, through the regular play experience." So it's like wrestling, then?
A note that makes it even clearer that she's a villain is the slasher-like ending to her arcade mode. A wolf family hears a report on the news about a killer on the loose, who's shown to be B.B. Hood. They take note of it but don't seem too concerned, either because of their location or to not scare their child. It then cuts to a scene of B.B. Hood on the path to their house, a new take on the slasher staple of the killer standing still just outside the house. I don't fully recall the ending so sorry if my summary is off. If the horror or villainy of B.B. Hood still isn't clear to the player, they would have had to be paying little attention throughout the playthrough.

One thing that's not explicit but nice to appreciate is how BB Hood's playstyle reflects her characterization. Usually in interviews when developers talk about new characters they talk about a gameplay niche they need to fill with the new character design. While Darkstalkers especially in the later entries is very rushdown-heavy, BB Hood's is especially intimidating with a variety of approaching tricks and her double jump, feeling very appropriate for giving the impression the other player has been caught in her trap.
I agree. Her attacks look deliberately non-intimidating at first. She has short arms so she looks like she doesn't have range. Her missiles are slow moving. And she doesn't seem like she has a lot of mobility options. But before you know it, your opponent goes "Wait, what the heck just happened?". The overall effect is, oddly enough, it makes her even more intimidating. It's brilliant.

Donovan lacks personality in his animations, or at least he doesn't have as much as B.B. but seriously, it's hard to flash brighter than Little Red Riding Hood with a basket full of deadly weapons.
In my previous job there was an emulator we could play on during lunch breaks. I used to play Darkstalkers, which no one knew about. But when I chose BB Hood my coworkers would say stuff like “did little red riding hood just pull a machine gun?”. It’s incredible how much this character can grab the attention of someone with no context. Definitely one of the best character designs ever made.

Not once in my life did I expect the regular Little Red Riding Hood to unload rounds into the wolf. I guess that's where they got the idea of "Little Red Riding Hood but she's packing heat."
Gotta say my favorite of the Darkstalkers characters is Q-Bee. Mechanically, her air dash is pretty much the most unique air dash of any fighting game with air dashes. The fact that she auto-tracks the opponent is super neat. The closest thing I'm aware of that does this is the super dash in DBFZ. The Royal Jelly super is also an incredible tool. Design wise, she's terrifying. Like Skullgirls, the fan service wears off really quick, showing how she's just a giant insect. Makes her kinda like Eliza in that regard. But seriously, the egg laying move is nasty.

Not that he prances about in a little dress he can't even fit in obviously, but the fact that as the mayor of Metro City, he's now gotta keep up appearances as a man of high social upbringing. As the fight escalates though and he takes one punch too many (reaches v-trigger state, in other words), the next thing his opponent knows, he's whipped out a lead pipe from seemingly out of nowhere and just hammers them mercilessly into the pavement with it, taking a laid back giddiness about having just hospitalized someone for about 7 months. Same goes for that combat knife he has no compunction about plunging into someone's kidney and playing it off like they fell on it or something. A thing or two...1) her win pose with Mr. K (the guy handing her the money) shows she's at least old enough to buy and smoke cigarettes as she pops one in her mouth as she counts the money even if it's not lit. 2) I'm pretty sure Harry is a Border Terrier based on his size, looks, and fur color...just a neat little thing. Apparently one of the reasons for her being as she is design wise is that in one of the versions of the story of Little Red Riding Hood...the Dahl versions specifically it's Little Red Riding Hood HERSELF that kills the wolf by shooting him, she then skins and wears his pelt. This version can be seen in the tabletop board game "Unmatched" where in the 2 player expansion Red Riding Hood vs Beowulf she teams up with the Huntsman to fight Beowulf and Wiglaf. Her special mechanic is "What's in my basket" and depending on the icon on her top card in the discard pile, extra effects can be used with cards in your hand...one of the icons is a pair of daggers, and her character miniature is wearing the wolf pelt. Sadly a good many of the classic Unmatched expansions are about to go out of print but I luckily got all the old ones and am working on the Marvel ones and future ones...hopefully they have a werewolf in one of the future sets so I can have a Gallon vs Bulleta style match with my friends lol.

B.B. Hood/Bulleta is hands down my favorite fighting game character, if not on my list favorite game characters of all-time. Used to play a lot of MvC2 and Darkstalkers 3 online years back. It's kind of funny how in that artwork at 7:18, Bulleta isn't holding an uzi like she does in-game. I read that Capcom designer Bengus went to a gun store to find references, but he couldn't find an uzi or something, so he drew a regular 9mm handgun. I'm no expert about firearms, but it's interesting to note. 3:38 - spiked ball which wasn't used in the final product. Her face actually looks terrifying with the long-sleeve blouse. I saw a scan of that concept art with a date that looked like August 24, 1996 (1996.08.24 on the lower left). So essentially Akiman created Bulleta around when I was born, even though Vampire Savior wasn't released until May 1997 :O It's little details like this that make characters interesting.

Loved this, hope you make more videos like this on other characters!
I said it once and I will say it again this game is a masterpiece
There days Im really afraid in what capcom would do with a new game...Thare are great chances that the animation would be weak.
She deserves to be in marvel vs capcom game. Or movie the concept is nice
I just came back to watch this. Sadly, the link doesn't work anymore.
The "Darkstalkers and the Twelve Principles of Animation" link unfortunately is dead, so it should probably be pointed at the Wayback'd version.
BB Hood should have been in every game that Morgan was in because she is a arbiter character
You speak the truth. Capcom needs to learn to listen to their fan base and make a new Darkstalkers game
I really wish Capcom would try making another sprite-style game like this. I’d gladly pay for DLC if it was super-animated sprites.
Liked this video before it even loaded. Full Darkstalkers coverage, please!
This is so fire they need to expand on this character!
One wonders how you feel about Baiken and Zappa; Baiken for her one arm, and Zappa for... everything else.
Thank you for making this video, Darkstalkers is my third FAVOURITE fighting game of all time

My favorite Darkstalkers character. :)
Gutted they didn't add BB hood in marvel vs capcom 3.
The article from the video is gone! If anyone can find an archived version of it somewhere, pass it on!

Thanks for recommending that article. Lot of detail that I knew I loved but never understood.
A new Darkstalkers could habe easily been Capcom/PlayStation's answer to Killer Instinct
Peacock from the past !😍
I CANNOT wait for when you get to my baby girl Hsien-Ko ABI!
New assassin:I always get caught but I do everything right
Bulleta:Just do what I do. Be a normal innocent bystander and then attack!
This video is almost too good.
This video has one of the best intros ever
keep up the good work good sir
The true monster
Awesome review as always.
While you're in the theme of forgotten classics, how about a video about a character from The Last Blade?
PLEASE
you forgot her crouching sprite where all the butterflies go into a freshly risen flower and she just stands there looking at it.
So essentially Akiman created Bulleta around when I was born, even though Vampire Savior wasn't released until May 1997 :O
It's little details like this that make characters interesting.
