Step-by-Step Procedure for Constructing a Steel Overhead Water Tank
    1. Planning and Design
Capacity Calculation: Determine the tank's size based on water demand.
    Structural Design:
Design the tank to handle water pressure, wind load, seismic forces, and dead load.
Follow applicable standards (e.g., BS5950, Euro code etc).
Material Selection: Choose appropriate steel (e.g., mild steel, stainless steel) and coatings for corrosion protection.
    2. Site Preparation
Survey and Soil Testing: Assess soil bearing capacity to ensure it can support the structure.
Foundation Design: Create a foundation plan based on soil properties and the tank's load.
    3. Foundation Construction
Excavation: Excavate the site to the required depth based on the foundation design.
    Reinforcement and Concrete Work:
Install reinforcement bars as per the design.
Pour concrete for the foundation and cure it to gain adequate strength.
    4. Column and Tower Construction
    Steel Columns:
Fabricate and erect steel columns for the tower structure.
Weld or bolt connections as per design specifications.
Cross Bracing: Add cross bracing for lateral stability, ensuring structural integrity.
    5. Fabrication of Tank Components
    Bottom Plate:
Cut and assemble steel plates for the base.
Ensure proper alignment and weld joints to make them leak-proof.
    Sidewalls and Roof:
Fabricate cylindrical or rectangular walls and the roof panels.
Add stiffeners to strengthen the walls and roof.
    Inlet, Outlet, and Overflow Pipes:
Install pipes as per the design for water flow and drainage.
    6. Assembly of the Tank
    Erection:
Lift and place the fabricated tank onto the steel tower using cranes.
Secure the tank to the tower with bolts or welds.
    Welding and Finishing:
Perform on-site welding of tank joints.
Smooth welds and inspect for leaks.
    7. Corrosion Protection
Surface Preparation: Clean steel surfaces by sandblasting or grinding.
Coating Application: Apply anti-corrosion paint or epoxy coating inside and outside the tank.
    8. Testing and Inspection
Leakage Test: Fill the tank with water to test for leaks.
Structural Stability Check: Verify that the structure is stable under load.
Pipe Testing: Test the inlet and outlet pipes for proper functioning.
    9. Finishing and Commissioning
Ladders and Railings: Install ladders, railings, and access platforms for maintenance.
Final Inspection: Ensure all components meet the design and safety requirements.
Commissioning: Begin operational use of the tank.
By following these steps, the steel overhead water tank can be constructed safely and efficiently while ensuring long-term performance.
