    NEVER! Use gloves while drilling. You much rather cut your finger than to have the glove getting caught by the drill. My grandpa made the mistake of wearing one when the drill caught on the cloth and wrapped his hand around the multiple times. Breaking many bones in the process.

    • @El_Dusty
      @El_Dusty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Also never use them on the grinding wheel either for the same reason. I know it's hot and you might get steel splinters like I did but I'd take that any day over having my arm yanked into a rotating machine. Safety glasses and medium length sleeves are all you need. But please do use proper gloves when welding. Don't want you to get burnt or get skin cancer.

    Heater hose for vacuum lines (especially PCV one) Yep I've made that mistake before. You'll be back to replace those sooner then you think.
    And for those wondering why. Heater hose is designed to hold in internal pressure, not resist external pressure so it collapses under full vacuum. And the oil that comes through the PCV will make it super soft and break down over time. you can actually see it 'sweat' with oil over time.

  • @ZIPCORD
    @ZIPCORD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Next time use a single thick base plate. To get the port just cross drill from say..., the PCV hole to the opening for the throttle. Major air leak you say? NO! Just tap the opening of the hole where you started and put in a set screw. That said, a valiant attempt to solve your problem. I once adapted a single SU carburetor to a Datsun down draft intake making a tapered adapter out of sheet metal.

    However I do have an interest in cars and the Internal Combustion Engine and the mechanism behind the working of a car.
    What I enjoy in your videos is the presentation and silly anecdotes, wisecrack and witty phrases that make them more enjoyable than the movies that get various Filmfare awards.

    Those spigots on the valve covers pull air INTO the crankcase through the air filter, not the other way around. The PCV valve pulls gasses from the crankcase, creating a draught, and those spigots provide a clean source of vent air....

  • @82abn34

    Some of those fabri-cobbles might not chooch forever :-) The good thing is that you're learning the hard way and that is the best way. Keep it up and learn from more experienced mechanics every chance you get. If you have the opportunity to take formal courses, do it. If you don't have that opportunity don't worry about it. With time and continued effort I have no doubt that you'll be a top notch mechanic. I say this because you've displayed aptitude in your videos on this job. I'm a technician of 26 years with a varied work background. The only arm chair advice I have is that hoses will rub through when in in contact with steel. Familiarize yourself with rigid tube bending and flaring. You can get tubing with standard pipe thread terminations and you can barb and flare tubing using hand tools designed for the job. In this way, you can custom plumb difficult areas. I love the way you dry fit and plan your next move. The presentations were entertaining and I've learned some things about your SAAB. Thank you!

    There should be a plastic thermally insulating spacer between the manifold and the carb. The manifold likes to be warm to help vapourise the petrol, the carb needs to be cold. Said spacer is a very common part and can be bought with a vacuum port already fitted, form Ford tuning shops in the UK. That Carb was very common on UK Fords in the 80s and is much used for tuning up.

    Two fuel pumps. You can have the electric one on a switch to give quick carb fill for starting and then switch it off to allow the mechanical one to do its thing. Check that you have the fuel pump push rod in the right way round. Only one end is hardened and that should bear on the cam. You will be able to see, when it is clean, that one end is discoloured a bit yellow. That is the hardened end. If you have it in wrong the rod will wear and shorten, so reducing the amount that the pump diaphragm works. Result, not enough gas, especially when going up hill. Push rod length should be 130mm.
    I would have liked to seen a tidy up of the engine bay and a lick or two of paint on the engine while it was out, Full degrease first of course. Doing that is entertainment and the end result is satisfying. Have fun on the road in part 3.
