Yeah El Paso seems to be frequently forgotten even though it's the biggest city in both western and southern Texas at almost 1 million people and has a major border crossing with Juarez Mexico

We were taught about these plans in Texas history growing up. One of the more prominent proposals was actually splitting it into 4 states on ecological zones, since the state technically supports 4 distinct climates.
I have distant memories of a 4 state one - I don't know the ecology zones well enough to know if it was that one. And I've seen multiple 5 state proposals - of dividing it for partisan reasons along boundaries that made sense at the time but would backfire due to trends continuing since then. But even these partisan versions had cleaner lines than this video's three state by river proposal.

As a european I find this fascinating. If there's divisions within a country here, it's often because of historical or linguistic reasons. Hearing how something like geography can be such a decisive factor really gives me a new perspective on the U.S
Well when you think about it a lot of Europe's divisions come from geography to like the Alps and the Rhine. Germany, Italy, and France were once all part of the same unified Kingdom under Charlemagne but when his grandkids ascended the throne they were given equal shares of the Empire and the geography split them. Forming the early signs of the territories that would become France, Germany, and Italy. It's partly why Switzerland is so fascinating because they were in the middle of all of that, which is why today they speak a germanic language and about 3 romance languages.

Yeah, I think he dismissed the fact that East Texas isn't developing because it doesn't need to. A government always takes advantage of its best resources, so for the current Texas state, thats the oil and gas in the west, and the ranching in the center, and the Science of Huston. Trinity's state government would likely be poorer then the other two states to be sure, but I doubt it would be the poorist in the Union. Its going to focus on its tourism industry, and develop the East Texas oil field more, and likely use national parks and the like to make money. Its likely the state would also take pages out of Louisiana's book, as its land would be somewhat similar.

If you went by the westernmost tributary, it would have almost all of the metroplex. He is working off the easternmost one, which starts at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall.

Except the southern Texas part wasn't really into the confederacy all that much. Not as much plantation slavery. It's more desert/ranching there. And culturally more like northern Mexico.

Great episode. Especially hard hitting since I am a Texan, my family was from South Texas and East Texas and my family was here prior to the Spanish Colonization and from Spain as well. Hell of a thought exercise.
Also in this timeline, at least King Of The Hill would still take place in this smaller Texas because of Arlen's proximity to Dallas, although there would be quite a few episodes that at least take place in the state of Rio Grande or go through it because of the episodes where the Hills and their neighbors would travel to Mexico.
The idea of "The Texas Debacle" would be interesting not just for the sake of history, but for poitics going further down the line. If a coalition of three states did decide to vote together to join back into one big state, imagine the precedent that sets for more modern proposals in our time, such as the Greater Idaho proposal we have where a bunch of counties from California, Oregon, and Washington asking to be cut off from their respective states and be folded into Idaho. Just imagine a how legislature may change if there is a legal precedent for more fluid border delineation in the country, where a state could, with enough pressure, be thrown into complete flux by the choices of its constituant counties. Just imagine, an alternative timeline where the counties hold more power over their states, and not the other way around?

I'm a historian from East Texas, and though I agree that we'd have the least resources of the three, we still had lumber and coal, both of which would be grown extensively if we didn't have western oil to rely on. Also, international shipping of Texas oil goes through Beaumont, so that would probably have some impact on its economy as well. I think it was undersold a bit in this video, but overall I think you did a great job!

Honestly, considering how small Trinity would be, I would think the push would be for the westernmost tributary, which would give them the whole metroplex today.

If you're considering a series on "what if X country was divided", might i recommend you talk about some of the major countries of the world like, "what if china was divided into communist north and nationalist south, or what if Russia was divided into Red and White zones after the civil war. I used to have a job driving cargo vans over the road on a Texas route. Dallas to Houston, sometimes out to Corpus, down to Brownsville, an all night sprint over to El Paso, then hit Amarillo on the way home. We would partner drive 24 hours for a week straight and be in Texas the entire time.

Ironically, of the G4 U.S.A. states (CA, TX, NY, & FL.), Florida was the only one that was ever split up in our timeline (British split up Spanish Florida into West Florida & East Florida via the Apalachicola River a while after they received control.) If this division was made with modern cities in mind, then the border could have been drawn around Houston to place it as the capital of East Texas. The Brazos River might be used as the division instead, switching to a straight line going north somewhere between Wichita and Ft Worth. Since this would encroach on Central Texas, the South Texas border could use the Guadalupe at the coast, then connect to the Colorado at Lake Travis. This would give each state their own bays for coastal cities.

They also set up a website for people to report suspected women who have abortions or even people who support them by driving them to the clinic etc. it’s a horribly draconian law that violates the supreme court’s ruling on abortion, but the current court allowed this law for some reason.
I got lucky in that snowstorm, my power went out for a few hours altogether. Meanwhile someone in the same apartment complex, but in a different section, didn't have power for DAYS.

Yeah, I think he dismissed the fact that East Texas isn't developing because it doesn't need to. A government always takes advantage of its best resources, so for the current Texas state, thats the oil and gas in the west, and the ranching in the center, and the Science of Huston.
Trinity's state government would likely be poorer then the other two states to be sure, but I doubt it would be the poorist in the Union. Its going to focus on its tourism industry, and develop the East Texas oil field more, and likely use national parks and the like to make money.
Its likely the state would also take pages out of Louisiana's book, as its land would be somewhat similar.
Wouldn't east Texas get the top half of DFW since the Trinity river goes by Dallas.
@@MLjoey It would most likely get all of Dallas proper since downtown itself is on the western bank of the main tributary of the river. If you went by the westernmost tributary, it would have almost all of the metroplex. He is working off the easternmost one, which starts at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall.

Great episode. Especially hard hitting since I am a Texan, my family was from South Texas and East Texas and my family was here prior to the Spanish Colonization and from Spain as well. Hell of a thought exercise.
Also in this timeline, at least King Of The Hill would still take place in this smaller Texas because of Arlen's proximity to Dallas, although there would be quite a few episodes that at least take place in the state of Rio Grande or go through it because of the episodes where the Hills and their neighbors would travel to Mexico.
The idea of "The Texas Debacle" would be interesting not just for the sake of history, but for poitics going further down the line. If a coalition of three states did decide to vote together to join back into one big state, imagine the precedent that sets for more modern proposals in our time, such as the Greater Idaho proposal we have where a bunch of counties from California, Oregon, and Washington asking to be cut off from their respective states and be folded into Idaho. Just imagine a how legislature may change if there is a legal precedent for more fluid border delineation in the country, where a state could, with enough pressure, be thrown into complete flux by the choices of its constituant counties.
Just imagine, an alternative timeline where the counties hold more power over their states, and not the other way around?

I'm a historian from East Texas, and though I agree that we'd have the least resources of the three, we still had lumber and coal, both of which would be grown extensively if we didn't have western oil to rely on. Also, international shipping of Texas oil goes through Beaumont, so that would probably have some impact on its economy as well. I think it was undersold a bit in this video, but overall I think you did a great job!
I never realized until now how unsatisfying the borders would look if Texas WAS split.

He mentions in a pinned comment that it would depend on the tributary, but I do not see any way that the easternmost tributary which begins at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall would be chosen over the much longer primary tributary that starts much further north and runs straight through the Metroplex. Honestly, considering how small Trinity would be, I would think the push would be for the westernmost tributary, which would give them the whole metroplex today.
It looked like by the way he was dividing it the division was just east of Dallas. Also funny enough, Fort Worth would quite literally be where the west begins
If you're considering a series on "what if X country was divided", might i recommend you talk about some of the major countries of the world like, "what if china was divided into communist north and nationalist south, or what if Russia was divided into Red and White zones after the civil war.

Born and raised in Texas, and I love it! Possible short video idea: what if Austin lost the paper war and the capital was moved back to Houston. I think it could be interesting because I love Htown and also because it would means that Austin wouldn't be as developed and would still be a frontier town. Love the vid!
There's a light-hearted book out there called "Lost States" which has an entry on 'Jacinto'; an alternate East Texas that was apparently being considered before the scenario you described ("Introduced into the U.S. Senate in 1860...despite serious discussion, the bill never reached a vote"). The main difference is the border river was going to be the Brazos River, meaning Houston would have been part of the state.

I used to have a job driving cargo vans over the road on a Texas route. Dallas to Houston, sometimes out to Corpus, down to Brownsville, an all night sprint over to El Paso, then hit Amarillo on the way home. We would partner drive 24 hours for a week straight and be in Texas the entire time.
As an East Texan that had to spend 2 years of school studying JUST Texas history? This is terrifying. Plus, Trinity sounds horrifyingly Baptist evangelical… and it would be. A real life Gilead if it were to happen.

Ironically, of the G4 U.S.A. states (CA, TX, NY, & FL.), Florida was the only one that was ever split up in our timeline (British split up Spanish Florida into West Florida & East Florida via the Apalachicola River a while after they received control.)
Also there has been recent attempts to have Southern Florida break away from Northern Florida & form a new state.

If this division was made with modern cities in mind, then the border could have been drawn around Houston to place it as the capital of East Texas. The Brazos River might be used as the division instead, switching to a straight line going north somewhere between Wichita and Ft Worth.
Since this would encroach on Central Texas, the South Texas border could use the Guadalupe at the coast, then connect to the Colorado at Lake Travis. This would give each state their own bays for coastal cities.

@@parlox676 Texas recently passed a really really hardline law banning all abortions, with the penalty harsher than the penalty for rape itself. They also set up a website for people to report suspected women who have abortions or even people who support them by driving them to the clinic etc. it’s a horribly draconian law that violates the supreme court’s ruling on abortion, but the current court allowed this law for some reason.
