    I found a NEW PASSION! I guess it's odd coming from an almost 64vyr old woman! Watching this youngster ( who I think I can tell, is already an Olde Soul) construct a simple shield! A truly Awesome Experience!! I'm a fine artist aficionado, I even call Mt self an artist most of the time..this kid, is an Artisan! There's a difference. I know a little about alot of stuff, I've even got the pronunciations down! But, this kid..he KNOWS almost everything from the bottom up! His videos are simple to understand, slickly produced, excellent camerawork. He us a Genius, in my opinion. I sure hope I'm around another w0.years to see how he grows! Consider me a lifelong subscriber!

      In the middle of short side we are drilling holes (approx. 6 mm) and fasten with a screw so centers of boards stays in place and the boards are centered during bendig.

    I'm over in Kaiserslautern (US military near Ramstein AFB) and I used some variation on your techniques to make shields designed to look like my unit's crest as going away presents for other soldiers, so thanks for that.
    I did it for free, but there is a real demand for that type of stuff in this area. Americans also like to collect souvenirs from the villages they live in. If you made and sold shields designed the same as some of the town coat of arms around here at the Renaissance fairs you'd likely make a fortune.

    Just a thing to try coming from someone with sewing experience: For the webbing on the edge over the rope, you might want to use a strip cut on the bias (diagonally) rather than a woven strap. The stretch you noticed will make it much easier to make it follow the round shape. In sewing we use bias cut tape for edges for this reason.

    • @TheShieldery
      @TheShieldery  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      thanks, that makes sense!
      The woven strep adds more protection caus of its thickness and sturdiness though.

    • @KitAlda
      @KitAlda 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheShieldery Yes, I can see that it is a much thicker fabric. Maybe you could find some fabric as thick as the strap, and cut bias strips? Either way, now you know.

    A thought for anyone looking for a bending jig that works about as well as the custom made one, but packs away like the straps. If you take two pieces of 90° angled steel (angle iron), or a U beam if you're fancy, and put them along the edges of the wood it should nearly if not entirely eliminate unevenness and localization of bowing. It should also reduce the number of straps necessary. Mr. Shieldery's jig is absolutely a more controllable and professional option, but if you're going to make a shield a year in your garage, this should be cheaper and more easily stored.

    • @TheShieldery
      @TheShieldery  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, Thanks for you feedback, but I tried that, doesn't work, cause:
      -when to boards bent the inner one starts to stand out (slightly smaller radius) => inner one slides up on the edge part (L-/U- profile) => plates loose contact
      - after applying a certain amount of tension the tension strap stops to slide over the edges and will only get shorter on the part next to the ratchet, that can dislocate the central support and make it slip away at the end
      If you want an easier storable bending setup, take a look at my video about the Kite shield :)

    When bending the wood, do you wet/soak the board in water to bend it easier? Or will the wood keep the bend even if bent dry?

    • @TheShieldery
      @TheShieldery  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Soaking would thin and therefore weaken the glue. If the wood is very dry, you could gently spray some water on it. The wood will stay bent caus the two planks got glued together in the desired shape. Have fun crafting :)

    Hello! I plan on making this shield for myself for Buhurt, and I gotta say: amazing video! Great explanation.
    I do have a clarifying question though, do you glue the boards together using the thicker fabric and then the initial layer around them for the shield faces, or is it just to glue the boards together?

    Aber auch wenn ich selber kein Problem mit Englisch habe, ist es trotzdem ein bisschen schade, dass (fast) keines auf deutsch ist.
    Bei dir sieht es so einfach aus!😁Ich glaube ich werde mich bald mal an einem semi-brauchbaren Zierschild mit meinem Familienwappen probieren!
    Was für einen Klebstoff hast du für das Seil am Schildrand verwendet, wenn man Fragen darf? War das so eine Art Montagekleber?

      @TheShieldery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dankeschön! :) Ja, das mit der Sprache hat mich auch lange beschäftigt. Aber Ich habe halt mehr Freunde in der Szene, die kein Deutsch sprechen, als welche die kein Englisch sprechen.
      Für einen Zierschild zum Anfangen empfehle ich die Methode aus dem Video über den riesen Normannenschild. Da ist die Biegevorrichtung nicht so aufwändig und man bekommt ein besseres Gefühl dafür.
      In dem Video habe ich noch "Pattex Repair Alleskleber" verwendet, aber weil der Preis da durch die Decke gegangen ist, leime ich das Seil nun mit Pattex Montagekleber (kleben, statt bohren!). Der macht den Job genau so gut.

If you can't attatch the fabrik with modern pva glue, you will have a hard time trying that with the authentic Skin-glue. Not to mention larger pieces of rawhide.
